Genuinely an underrated classic sci-fi. And it's cheesy tagline, No gene for the human spirit. -

It's a short-story (more of a novella going by it's size) about a world where people spend most of their time Animal Crossing-esque virtual worlds, and there is a new form of virtual life/pets, Digiform developed by some company. It's decent, although not the best of Chiang's works. -

Was there any mention of what it's views were on mathematics itself?
Because so far as I understand, a piece of code is, in essence, a logical structure of things being computed in succession to produce some result.
If we go into further lower levels of this, a running program is essentially electrons individually moving in a haphazard manner but collectively directed to become a meaningful signal (a 0 or 1). I wonder how anyone can logically justify this, as a purely philosophical (perhaps legal?) discussion, keeping aside the inherent immorality and evil-ness in banning code. Which, I confess, is nothing short of a laughable idea to me. I'm sure there must be more articles on the topic.

I just knew that "Hey JFK was assassinated and it was pretty big", "Hey there was this artist Houdini", et cetera. Do you think if I read it further it'd become a better experience? Because honestly I felt that reading through it was excruciating since I can't really relate to any of the cultural themes at all.
Don't they need to have communication over chatting apps like WhatsApp with their classmates/friends? Especially during corona when I assume they don't go out to hang out?
Now that I think of it, even I personally didn't have a smartphone before I went to college, that is until a few years ago (disregarding the time I had a barely functioning smart-ish phone to keep when I went outside). Do they use your/your wife's phone for chatting? (Which is what I did for whatsapp, telegram and others could be used over laptop too).
