I wouldn't be that harsh on it. This is a far cry from an XBox COD lobby with kids screaming insults and slurs into microphones all match long. The chat is proximity based, and many times I can go an entire raid without seeing another soul. Sure, sometimes you get someone who does scream toxic shit, but 99% of the time its when they have lost a fight and you are about to send them back to Speranza with nothing.

Your resident Carolina fan here, we apparently needed one last stunt on this roller coaster of a regular season before we bring it into the station.

Against the Bucs... I don't think I can really share my true feelings in polite company. The team didn't quite perform to the level I was expecting, but it was also raining like crazy and our OLine just can't get leverage to spring our run game anymore. I think we've been figured out and that's something to address in the off season.

But I think I need to talk about the elephant in the room: this was the absolute worst officiating I've seen in a long time. And I wouldn't be mad if it had not absolutely felt one sided against the Panthers. I try to keep out of conspiracies and "What if's" when it comes to sports officiating because in 99% of the time it's a fool's errand. This time? I think I found the 1% of the time where it could be easily argued that they prevented Carolina from winning. I'm just going to stick to the two major ones: First I want to talk about is the phantom OPI on TMac that took away a major 30 yard gain and effectively killed the drive. This guy was clearly doing arm fighting with the defender and breaking free where the defender was caught off balance and staggered a bit. The announcers were clearly giving the refs shit for this one too, as I'm not sure what TMac was supposed to do.

The second, I think was bigger: The blown dead backwards pass where the ball was clearly passed backwards, meaning it can be dropped and picked back up and run forward. Rico had room in front of him to run and was ready to get a good chunk of yards, but as soon as the ball was in his hands the play was blown dead. Which was wrong. That's okay, the refs are human and mistakes can happen. There are ways to correct this, by allowing the offense to replay the down. Which the refs did not give the option for Canales (the HC) to do. INSTEAD what they did was to rule this ball "Out of bounds" six yards behind the line of scrimmage. Out of bounds. Friends, I'm sure you have eyes. Rico has the ball in his hands when the whistle blows and the players let up. Clearly he is in bounds. Where in the hell did they get that idea that it wasn't?

....I'll cut off here, I could go on for ages on how bad this officiating was. Something needs to happen, but I know nothing will and that makes me sad.

So ultimately, instead of just comfortably watching the rest of the weekend knowing full well we were in the playoffs, I was subjected to Saints at Falcons, and having to root for a division rival in a proxy war to determine the fate of the division. The Falcons came out on top (thankfully) and we're moving on, but it was weird to watch a game where division rivals were in the stands being friendly with one another. The tickets were cheap enough for fans from Carolina to buy up a bunch and drive down to ATL to get in on the action and I don't blame them, if I still lived in the area I'd have considered doing it too.

Our next opponent is the LA Rams. We beat them before, but I also know this team appears to be running on fumes. I don't expect a win, and I would be happy enough to just to have the playoff appearance. I just want it to be a good, competitive game.

The short answer is no, you will always be in the map with other players. They will be doing their own thing and they are always a threat. However, they do have a matchmaking algorithm that matches players based on how they interact with other players. Shoot on sight? Straight into the thunder dome. Passive and more PvE? You get put in with people who are more friendly. Now this can change with time of day or if people are gaming the algorithm to try and easy targets (foxes in the henhouse, if you will) but in the past week I've only been taken down by players a handful of times. Honestly arc get me more because the higher end bots are incredibly dangerous if you try to fight them.

I've played the hell out of the game maybe I can clarify a bit. In my opinion, none of the "innovation" is around the zeitgeist of player interactions. They're great, especially in solo play, but I don't think the "Aggression Based Matchmaking" was in place soon enough to sway the results of this voting. For clarity: Aggression Based Matchmaking is some behind the scenes engine that people speculated on for a long time that matches people based on if they shoot other players on sight. I'm on the friendly side of the spectrum and I rarely get shot in solos these days, it's rather great.

But I don't think that's why you get the innovation award. That's not enough to justify it, right? Well, there are two other major things they've done that I've never really seen in other games:

    1. On-the-fly voice changing for in-game chat. In an actual, innovative use of AI, they devised a system that allows people to make their voice sound different when chatting through the in-game voice chat. It actually doesn't sound half bad and when I played around with it while playing with my wife, she was impressed that my voice could come out incredibly differently. The next thing that she said is "I like this, I can mask my voice to not have people think I'm a girl right away." It's not perfect, but I've not seen anyone else try this yet. I'm curious to see who else innovates on this concept.

    2. The enemies feel legitimately smart. I'm old by gamer standards, and I've seen many generations of "Our in-game enemies are the smartest yet!" and sometimes they're good, other times they're smart until you figure out their programming and then they're not all that. In Arc Raiders? These enemies are genuinely scary and they feel strangely organic. Their behaviors make sense and it's actually quite intimidating. Lets take the humble wasp as our case study. It's what it is on the tin: a quad copter with guns strapped underneath it. A pain in the butt to deal with. Lets see some of the simple things that this one item does:

      • It scans both visually and audibly. It either will see you or hear you. If nothing is out of the ordinary, it continues on a scripted patrol route. If it sees or hears a player, it will go into a "query" mode where it will then break from it's patrol route to investigate. If it finds nothing, it will then go back into "patrol" mode and return to it's route. If it see's something however, that's where the interesting stuff starts.

      • Alright, now it knows you're there. What do you do? If you're caught outside without cover, it's pretty easy: you've got to fight back because it's pretty good at filling you full of holes. If you have cover, it will try to shoot you as soon as it has a clear sight, but it doesn't like to move while firing to keep a stable firing platform. You can get out of the way by hiding behind a rock or tree. The wasp will then try to find an angle where it can get a clear shot on you again. Normally, in most games, this would be a simple strafe, side to side which these do sometimes, but they also trained them to use all three dimensions. These robots have no problems going over top if it will get them a better shot. But what if you go and hide in a building? No problem. If they know you're there (i.e. they were shooting at you on the way in, or you shot one of them) they will swarm around the building. Suddenly you feel like you're trying to hide from the raptors from Jurassic Park. They will look at literally EVERY angle to see if they can get a shot. I've seen them circle around the building to find the one window in the back to get that clear shot and take someone down. And, adding on to that verticality I mentioned earlier, I had a scenario where I thought I was safe in a building with one door that they could reach. The arc quickly taught me that there was a hole in the ceiling as it descended down to start taking shots at me indoors. They aren't limited to a range. They will chase you across the map if you can run from them that long. If they know you are there, the desire to eliminate you is the ultimate goal.

      • Now what about when you fight them? As you can see in the image, their rotors are unarmored. You can shoot them to take it out, which is relatively easy to do if you are 1-on-1. When you take out one rotor, this destabilizes the drone, and it starts to wobble around erratically. After a moment, however, the drone does figure out how to fix the problem and stabilize itself to return itself back to stability on only three rotors. This is never just a scripted "Wobble in one of 10 ways" like in games of the past. No, this is dynamic. Every time it is different and relatively unpredictable.

The point of this? All enemies do this to some degree. The Hornet is an armored version of the Wasp. There's an Arc that's goal is just to scan and call in friends when it finds you. There's an upgraded version of the wasp that's larger, heavily armored and fires rockets that will ruin your run if they hit you. The walking enemies also do this too. If they lose legs, they crawl around dynamically based on the legs they have lost. They try their best to work around and enact as much damage as possible on the players. I've played lots of shooters over the years, I have not played against enemy NPCs that are as consistently challenging as these are. The scary part? I'm convinced that the devs are slowly making them better over time without telling us. Every week or so, I'm noticing the bots doing something subtly different that I'm certain they weren't doing before.

So yes, I don't think it's just a zeitgeist emergent game play between players thing. I'm sure that was part of the reason why some people voted, but the Arc themselves really have had an impact on how people perceive and interact with the game. My favorite? Watching someone who downed me get swarmed by robots because they foolishly ran in front of a pack of them to finish me off is always funny as hell because this ruthless killing nature is being done in my advantage.

    Your Carolina fan here...

This week was weird. Last week, I confidently espoused that the Bucs would beat the Dolphins. They completely flubbed it and lost, which opened the window! ...Then Carolina promptly ignored it because they lost to Seattle. To be fair, Seattle is one of the best teams in the league AND we hung with them through most of the game. Honestly, without the untimely (and undisciplined) Jaycee Horn facemask penalty, we have a good shot of winning that game. It's wild seeing a single penalty just suck the air out of the stadium like that. At that moment, we all knew the game was over and it most definitely was. This team surely has more to go in growing and learning how to win against great teams.

That being said, there was one playoff scenario that I honestly though was too out there to even talk about last week. I mean, first of all it did involve the Bucs losing to the Dolphins, but now it ALSO needed the Falcons to somehow manage a win against the Rams. ...which they did. Despite trying their best to return to their roots and give the game away from a massive early lead. I have three takeaways from this game:

    1. Next year, the Falcons are going to be a menace. Between Bijan on offense and Pierce on defense, they have a solid core forming. In fact, this whole division will be a bloodbath with the Saints recent resurgence with Shough as their QB. Even if we do manage to win the division (I like our chances now) I think we will find it hard pressed to repeat.
    2. The only saving grace from them being a menace is that if they end next week with a win, they will have won 4 games in a row and likely keep their HC for at least another year. This will handicap them greatly and waste another year of performance.
    3. Jon Bois and Alex Rubenstien did a great documentary series on why being a Falcons fan is suffering and watching last nights game, trying to root for the Falcons (as disgusting as that felt) reminded me of that fact. They quickly got to a 21 point lead, and then did their absolute best to squander every single point of that lead, requiring them to have a game winning field goal at the end and EVEN THEN, they were barely able to keep it together where Puca almost made the catch of the year to at least tie the game and bring it into OT.

So why do I care about how the Falcons are doing so much? Since they now are tied with the Bucs and one game behind the Panthers, there is a scenario where all three teams end up with an 8-9 record. If this happens (Where Carolina loses, but Atlanta wins next week) then there will be a three way tie that results in Carolina winning the division (3+ tiebreakers get interesting)

So now we're in a position where we can beat Tampa and secure it for ourselves (Which is doable) OR if we fail to do that, Atlanta could beat the Saints and give us that safety blanket.

What weird scenario for the end of the season.

I had completely spaced that there were games on Saturday until after they happened so I missed that highlight and I went to look at it just now. Yeah, that's an intense fight, closer to what I would expect from a hockey game. Usually an NFL fight is just some colorful word exchanges and maybe a punch or two. Most players are smart enough to know not to punch helmets because you are the one who will lose more ( Helmets hurt) and the penalties and fines aren't really worth it. For those curious, here is the highlight on Reddit

That being said, seeing an Eagles player take on like 8 Commanders and still not go down easy was impressive. Also, #0 from the Commanders is a coward. Started that shit and dipped out to avoid any penalties. At least finish what you start, even if it is swinging at a guy twice your size.

    Your resident Panthers fan here...

It's been nearly a decade since I've had hope and enjoyment like this with the team. We are playing not only meaningful football in December, but because our season most certainly comes down to the last week of the regular season, we also are playing meaningful football in January too.

This past game was a solid showing of where Bryce has developed in his third year. I'll be honest, I was very anxious about his performance midway. There were a few games where it felt like he didn't quite step up... but then he's since put those fears to rest. In this game? The run game was stuffed and non-existent. Neither Chubba or Rico, both very talented and recently accomplished RBs, couldn't get anything going. This required Bryce to step up and lead this team to a win and he most definitely did that. His stat line isn't as showy as his outings earlier this year, but he moved the ball efficiently and didn't turn it over. He also was elusive, he reminded me of early years Russel Wilson where no matter what you tried, he just is barely out of reach and then he makes the play. If he keeps growing like this, then I'm very happy with the trajectory of this team and where we will be next year.

As for next week... for the first time in a LONG while, the outcome of a game that the Panthers are playing in doesn't really matter. Sure, a win really would help but even if we lose, we still just win the division the last week of the season in a winner-take-all bout in Tampa Bay. The ONLY way this doesn't happen is if A) The Panthers beat the Seahawks (Not likely, but we beat the rams who they just beat so anything is possible) AND B) The Bucs lose to the Dolphins. I don't think I need @hamstergeddon to reiterate: This is HIGHLY unlikely to happen. The fins are dead in the water and while the Bucs are struggling, the Fins are struggling more. Honestly, I would not be surprised if we pull our starters in the second half if the Bucs game is out of hand. No need to risk injury if it doesn't change anything in the standings.

This was a really weird game. People are nitpicking everything that the coaches did (kinda rightfully so) but nobody seems to want to admit that their coaches just schemed up the game better than us. We have the talent, they had the scheme and the scheme won in the end.

I hate that we got swept by the Saints, but it's done now. Now we have to beat the Bucs twice and I don't know if we can do that. It's been a hell of a season anyways, so lets go see how we can finish strong!

Your resident Carolina fan here enjoying the best bye week this franchise has experienced in years. We are going to play meaningful football in December AND the Saints beat the Bucs? Damn straight. Now the Panthers and Bucs are tied for wins at the top of the division. IF the season ended today, then the Bucs take it on a ridiculous tiebreaker, but there are still 4 games to go, and two of them involves Panthers v Bucs. Whoever can maintain composure takes the division, a sweep at this point guarantees it. It's been nearly a decade, but we are legit talking about playoffs in a serious tone!

This week opens up with the Bucs playing the Falcons on Thursday. If the Bucs slip up here, they are on the back foot but the Falcons have looked really bad lately and I honestly don't have much faith. The Seahawks were just playing as if they were taking out the trash against the Falcons. The Bucs are also super beat up though, reaching out to retired former player Jason Pierre-Paul (who famously blew up his hand with fireworks while he was still with the Giants) to fill the gaps.

Now the Panthers play the Saints. A Saints team that looks like they have some life in them and are not just pushovers. We lost to them once already, I hope the team takes that to heart because we can't afford to be behind in the race against the Bucs. I'm feeling that we can win, but this team has been super bipolar. I really can't bank on anything anymore because it depends on which team shows up. I'm beyond "Just make it competitive" knowing that this team really needs to beat the Saints.

That's not surprising. I lived for a few years out in Albuquerque and I think I saw only one other panthers fan during my time there. I became the token Panthers fan that everyone knew. I had left a couple years before the 2015 super bowl, so I'm kinda glad I wasn't surrounded by Broncos fans when we lost.

I'm not even thinking SB this year though, I'm content with competing for playoffs in the final stretch. I'll be ecstatic if we make it because we fought hard to earn it. I don't see us going far, we're in one of the worst divisions in the league right now and I think just getting to the playoffs will be enough of a success measure.

    Your Carolina fan here...

I'll be honest. I don't understand this team. The only consistent thing about them is that they are unpredictable. Packers? Win! Saints? Lose! Falcons? Win! 49ers Lose (with style) Rams? Win!

This wasn't even a "Oh the rams screwed it up somehow" win either. It was a clear, no questions asked, Panthers straight up beating the Rams with Bryce Young leading the charge. I honestly couldn't believe it while watching. Bryce is ice cold in clutch situations, becoming the youngest player to get to 11 comeback, game winning drives. He now sits in company with Josh Allen and Peyton Manning and we all know they took a bit to develop before they hit their stride.

Now we have a winning record, playing meaningful games in December. We aren't getting into the playoffs on a wildcard unless something crazy happens, so the Division it is, making the Bucs our primary opponent and look who we play in 2 of our last three weeks? We can't really lose any games going forward, but we DEFINITELY need to beat the Bucs both times to guarantee the spot. High likelihood of a final week early playoff game down in Tampa. On one hand, the Bucs are beat up and aren't playing their best ball. On the other hand, the Panthers are the most Bipolar team in the league. I don't know how to predict this and, honestly, I don't want to. I'm just going to let it happen and figure out what the heck just went down later. It's better for my sanity that way.

Bye this week, so I hope the extra week of rest helps in getting ready for this potential playoff push.

This is the understanding for both of our cats. They quickly figured out that we will consistently enforce them to be off the counter if we see them on it. However, if we aren't around then we'll...

The sole exception understood that table tops and counters were off limits as long as there was a human in the room... but that if the room did not contain a human, every surface was fair game. He could not be persuaded otherwise. But as I said, he was the exception!

This is the understanding for both of our cats. They quickly figured out that we will consistently enforce them to be off the counter if we see them on it. However, if we aren't around then we'll find their paw prints all over the countertop from the night before. They will test their boundaries though. If there was something that we prevented them from doing in the past, they will very cautiously toe the line. They'll sit right within reaching distance of the countertop. They know this is fine, but then they will reach out and try to climb on to it with us noticing, hoping we won't stop them. They key in this scenario is that you must stop them every time. A simple "HEY, GET OFF" is usually enough, as they know they crossed the line.

And this brings me to my biggest point with cat ownership: Consistency. You must enforce your rules the same way (as much as reasonably possible). Feed at relatively the same times (auto feeders can help with this, but your cat also will help by reminding you they are hungry), attention at roughly the same times, and anything else you do with them, do at a consistent time. They are creatures of habit, so they will help you with your routine. If you go to bed at the same time, the one time you stay up late, they will come and let you know that you aren't doing what you expect them to do and you should go to bed instead.

3 INTs, but only 3 points to show. The offense as a whole just couldn't perform. Rico couldn't get momentum. Bryce didn't have much time. Receivers couldn't catch. They just collectively sucked. I'm struggling to decide if I want to call this showing "competitive"

That has a big thing to do with the way they changed the rookie pay scale. Bradford came in and was making more money than vets meaning the team HAD to play this QB otherwise they were throwing massive amounts of money away. In 2011, they changed this and now players were coming in on (relatively) pre-defined rookie deals that were significantly more affordable. That means if you got a young QB, you have to start them for the completely opposite reason of "Lets see how far we can get on a cheap deal." If they're good (like Mahomes or Allen) they get a dump truck of money and suddenly you can't field talent around them as easy (See: Chiefs struggles this year)

But because over that time period college football has diverged so much from NFL, it means if you are rushing this person in, like Brett said, you have to at least cater somewhat to their talent. Watching the Cam years in Carolina, I can attest that his first two years were full of college style offenses and, as time went on, he was getting more comfortable. I'm also watching the same thing with Bryce and while I was getting a little anxious about his progress lately, this video has calmed my opinion and now I feel way more patient, though at 448 yard 3TD win will also help with that.
