I have only played a tiny bit of the game, so I can't really speak to the Easter eggs, but there was something a little stilted and on the nose about the writing I did encounter. The DRM quest in The Witcher 3 is another example of an easter egg that was not at all an easter egg, just a blatant reference and 4th wall break that completely took me out of the game. You have to use a magic key called GOG to break some magic protection called DRM? Come on. I wonder how much of it is the marketing department and how much of it is just people trying to be funny and quirky and not quite grasping what works comedically. Come to think about it, most of the jokes in Witcher didn't really land for me.

I just re-read Harriet The Spy, which I haven't read since I was about 12. It still holds up for me. I nearly cried at the same part that made me cry when I was a kid. Very strange to re-read something that was so important to me back then, I can almost trace certain aspects of my personality/outlook directly to this book. There's a line in the movie "You've Got Mail" where Meg Ryan's character says "When you read a book as a child, it becomes a part of your identity in a way that no other reading in your whole life does."

I also read two of the sequels, which I didn't know existed. They were okay, but lacked the charm of the original. Or maybe I am not the intended audience anymore! After all, I'm not a young adult in the late 1970s.

I'm considering going to college for creative writing. I did a bit less than two years of community college after high school, but dropped out before getting an AA. I have always thought University would be a waste of money if I didn't know what kind of job I wanted to get with the degree. I have a lot of self worth issues and was medicating them with opiates and alcohol between ages 19-28. Six years ago, I replaced my heroin use with crippling alcoholism. After I had an alcohol withdrawal related seizure three years ago, I quit drinking. I've been writing stand up comedy and short comedy videos for quite a while now, and really want to learn story structure and discipline and whatever else creative writing teachers know. I'm terrified by the FAFSA/scholarship/grant process and have no money but I really want to learn how to write more betterer.

The real change would be following through with this, not becoming discouraged, and getting over my "You Don't Deserve Shit" mantra. If you're someone who's been through this kind of thing, please reach out. I already feel like I'm being crushed.

I wish people didn't think being an asshat was how you were supposed to act on the internet (or as I call it, the 'net). There must have been some very angry people setting the tone real early on.

Do you think it's possible that the joke from the original review has been through so many permutations that some people take it seriously?

Oh yeah, isn't it Kingdom: New Lands? That's a very pretty game. I considered picking it up, but I am not great at strategy and planning. I feel like I'd enjoy it during the day cycle, but when night comes around and the baddies come to get you I would get way too stressed out. I also prefer a lot more story in my sit-down games (as opposed to my smoke break games). God, that pixel art is so beautiful though.

I've played a few games on Android that are bizarre and wonderful, and nobody else seems to know them. Philipp Stollenmeyer makes nice, tactile, casual puzzle games with a clear and chunky aesthetic and great sound. Verticow, Zip Zap, Burger, and Okay? are four I can recommend. His art is very Monty Pythonesque, and the games just feel cool to play.

I also tell everyone I know about a game from 2014 called Always Sometimes Monsters. This game was telling an inclusive story before it was cool. It seems to have been made in RPG Maker, and is set in a modern city. There is no combat, just being a person, having conversations, running errands, and trying to accomplish your goals. The dialogue is realistic and sharp, and the story unfolds in a very satisfying (if a bit tropey) way.

I made a friend online a couple weeks ago -- this guy posted his game called Amethlion to an android forum. It's an open world crafting RPG and he was selling it for a buck fifty. I jumped at the chance to play a cool little pixel art adventure and actually get to interact with the creator. It's buggy as all hell, but it is very cute and pretty fun. The creator is a very nice person and has been very grateful to hear my bug reports. Dynamic Zero is the name of his company, and he made the game solo with his brother making the music. It's a family affair and I think that is just so sweet.

What mobile games are you all into these days, if any? And if the answer is none, how come?

This is a common occurrence in the service industry too, but just because someone is having a bad day does not give them the right to lash out at others. I've had bad days and gotten impatient and frustrated and snippy with people, but I've never treated someone like garbage or personally attacked anyone. There's having a bad day, and there's being terrible to other people. They don't have to go hand in hand. I know I don't have the right to treat others badly, but some people feel they do have that right.

Have you heard of West of Loathing? It's a comedy wild-west RPG made by the Kingdom of Loathing (KoL) creators. The art is really minimalist and stylized and the writing is top-tier. It's very similar to KoL in that it's got the same visual style, same turn-based combat, and same humor. I have never played a game that made me laugh as hard as this one. There are lots of puzzles and way too much content for one playthrough -- different companions and horses have their own quests, so you really can't see everything in one go. It's $11.00 on Steam and I think it's the same price on Switch.
