Gabe Newell said it for games, right ? But it applies here. Currently, piracy offers an overall better service than paid streaming. You can get all seasons of any show or any movie you want on any torrent or pirate stream site of your choice......for free. AND, if you download it, it is preserved with you as long as you can maintain your storage devices. You don't have to give a fuck about license agreements expiring and paid-for content no longer being available. I have a library of my most cherished movies and tv shows saved across several storage devices. They will remain available to me till i die.

Same. Everything ive heard about this game suggests that it was either a case of low-effort asset flip which did not pan out, or a case of a small dev team getting in over their heads and making a mess of it. Neither case is very unique.

So i cannot understand why people wishlisted this so much on Steam ? I suppose it is an effect of people being curious whether it is real or not and then wishlisting it as a means of tracking its progress. I have done that myself for a few other games.

But yea, Life is Strange is a good example. How would you rate the latest one ? True Colours ?

I will make sure to check out Dear Esther, Little Nightmares and The Invincible; already have them on my wishlist

Haha, happy to help out. May your framerates remain high and core temps remain low as you spend your nights lost in brilliant worlds and immersive stories.

Replying a bit late, but judging by what you have written here, we have an identical taste in game selection! Rare to meet someone with such similar preferences of games even on the internet.

So here are my recommendations (but it is possible that you may have played them already or have them on your radar):

    • The mainline Half Life games - duh
    • The new Deus Ex games (the ones with Adam Jensen) - Human Revolution & Mankind Divided. Both are absolute masterpieces of the 'immsersive sim' sub-genre. I have replayed them numerous times. Just overall excellent.
    • Prey (2017) from the makers of Dishonored - basically Arkane studios at their peak before they collapsed. An excellent immersive sim, possibly the best one out there till date.
    • The Splinter Cell series - the newest one 'Blacklist' has modern mechanics but has the least 'old school stealth' feel. If you dont mind the dated graphics or mechanics you can try Splinter Cell Chaos Theory which is the best of the series.
    • The new Hitman : World of Assasination - not to be played for its narrative, like others in your description; but more for its excellent stealth & disguise mechanics, level design and replayability (killing your targets in a myriad of different ways).
    • The old school Thief games if it is still possible to run them on modern systems
    • The Dead Space series - more focused on horror compared to others on this list, but still an excellent linear, narrrative-based, single-player experience if you can tolerate the jump scares. Just really good horror design.
    • Alien: Isolation - basically the peak of linear survival horror game design, apart from maybe Silent Hill or Amnesia. Just an excellent experience all around. Stays faithful to the feel of the movies as well.
    • The Metro series (Metro 2033, Last Light, Exodus)
    • A Plague Tale - Innocence & its sequel A Plague Tale - Requiem
    • Soma - a superb story-driven game which handles difficult themes like individuality and existentialism in an excellent way. And it has a 'safe mode' where basically you can play the game without scary monster encounters and just enjoy the amazing story and atmosphere.
    • The other two games in the new Tomb Raider trilogy - Tomb Raider 2013 and Rise of the Tomb Raider. If you liked Shadow of the Tomb Raider, you will like these. In fact, Rise of the Tomb raider still holds up surprisingly well in terms of visuals and mechanics even today.
    • Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal; they are not an easy or relaxed experience, but since you're on PC, you can use a trainer or console commands to boost your health/damage and go on a care-free rampage. Both of these games have excellent level design and exploration is rewarded with great visuals and cool collectibles.
    • Wolfenstein: The New Order and its sequel, Wolfenstein: The New Colossus - in a similar vein as the new doom games. More action and shooting focused, but they do a great job of worldbuilding and story as well.
    • Some other Sony games that have gotten PC ports - God of War, Ratcher & Clank, The Last of Us. God of War is a superb narrative experience. The father & son story intermingled with the larger world of Norse mythology, it is just so freaking well done. And on PC, you can have it be as easy as you like with a trainer to boost your damage and XP progression. The PC port of the Last of Us is also reportedly fixed well enough now, and it looks great if you have a powerful PC build.

ive made this comment elsewhere as well - in an alternate universe, Cyberpunk 2077 releases in this state and wins several GotY awards.

in our universe, we were in secret early access for 3 years, and now, finally, the game is complete. I can only imagine the regret some of the senior devs at CDPR must be feeling. They would have been praised up as one of the best independent game dev studios on the planet if CP77 had actually released in this state, and if they had marketed it slightly differently - as an open-world action game with RPG elements.

i thought they could milk no more out of this franchise but it looks like i thought wrong.

But hey, i am always down to watch a 'turn your brain off' type of monster movie. Just giant creatures fighting each other. But then that is what they need to fill the runtime with. Don't show me more humans contemplating philosophies about life. Show me the monsters.

That's actually why i liked the 1998 Godzilla movie. Yes the Matthew Broderick one. Yes i enjoyed it. It had a good amount of monster-on-screen time. And the rest was fairly straightforward plot-building, even if largely contrived.

This is a quote by Yahtzee Croshaw in one of the early "Extra Punctuation" videos. Maybe slightly muddled by my poor memory.

"Adapting a video game IP to film or television should not be considered as an elevation of the IP. It's a reduction. There are feelings/emotions/immersion that can be only conveyed through the interactivity of video games. You cannot replicate the same feeling through a movie adaptation. That would be like trying to appreciate a great movie as a series of still paintings, or trying to appreciate a great painting by examining only one pixel at a time." -or something to that effect

    Corporate executive morons strike again.

The Escapist was just starting to become good again. Apart from Zero Punctuation, they had a few other good series i was into such as Extra Punctuation, Cold Take, Design Delve, Stuff of Legends, 3 minute reviews, Slightly Something Else podcast, etc. All good content.

Now it looks like almost everyone responsible for the above content has left. So basically rest in pieces, the Escapist. I will look forward to whatever Nick, Yahtzee and the crew come up with next. Good luck to them.
