I'm probably in the minority but I like the current Godzilla stuff. It fills my void for the failure of Pacific Rim with Del Toro driving the bus. I like the grand scale that the new Godzilla has and they are just fun dumb movies with a lot of destruction. I'm not looking for anything else than giant monsters beating the crap out of each other or a city or something. Granted... Im still not going to a theater and paying $20 dollars to see it, but I'm also not going to pay $20 dollars to go see Flowers of the Killer Moon. Movie theaters are a joke and I'm not dropping $30+ on a movie and a soda for the "experience".

I have a strong aversion to US military propaganda. That being said battleship wasn't really a Kaiju movie as much as it was an Alien Scifi action movie.

I didn’t particularly care for King of Monsters but thought it was better than Godzilla v Kong at the very least.

Godzilla movies have always sort of alternated between serious and goofy from one movie to the next, even throughout the 70s and 80s. IMO doing both at once is part of the franchise’s appeal and maybe almost necessary for its longevity. The silly movie acts as sort of a palette cleanser so you’re not constantly reflecting on the metaphor for mass death.

MCU movies also kind of do this, but they try to jumble up the tone all within the same movie which doesn’t work as well IMO.

That makes sense. Although, I think the lighter tone of Skull Island worked better than the tone of GvK. And I wish they would have stuck with that instead of going real Roland Emmerich with it.

Just a reminder there are other options this year if you're hyped about Godzilla and don't like the look of this trailer.

Just saw this one (Godzilla: Minus One) in theaters. This might be the best Godzilla that has ever been made. Seriously, everyone here needs to see it on the biggest screen possible.

Yeah, it was really good. Not like Portrait of a Lady on Fire good, but I actually cared about the human characters, I thought Godzilla was scary, the atomic breath was awesome in every sense of the word, and I kept thinking about the movie in the days after seeing it. It was a very good Godzilla movie. I'd say its IMDb rating is about right, as far as IMDb ratings go. Not perfect, but the filmmakers did a great job for a $15 million Japanese movie with high visibility effects in 2023.

But hey, i am always down to watch a 'turn your brain off' type of monster movie. Just giant creatures fighting each other. But then that is what they need to fill the runtime with. Don't show me more humans contemplating philosophies about life. Show me the monsters.

That's actually why i liked the 1998 Godzilla movie. Yes the Matthew Broderick one. Yes i enjoyed it. It had a good amount of monster-on-screen time. And the rest was fairly straightforward plot-building, even if largely contrived.

That said, in Godzilla Minus One (just came out this weekend), I actually wanted to see the humans. Yes, Godzilla was the attraction, but I actually cared about the humans and wanted to watch them overcome their own problems, both in the form of a 500-foot tall dinosaur with atomic breath and in the form of their psychological and emotional 500-foot tall dinosaurs with atomic breath.

Kong coming in clutch with the infinity gauntlet. The enemy never stood a chance.

All aboard the monsterverse train. If the studio is willing to go all in on these, I’m for it.

That second to last clip cemented it. It's the return of the buddy cop movies. Just waiting for Godzilla to roar "I'm too old for this shit".

I avoid watching trailers but my god, it being Godzilla "x" Kong is the funniest thing. I can never not imagine them making out on a deviantart page next to naruto and sasuke.
