Horimiya: The Missing Pieces | Discussion thread - all episodes

Synopsis
It followed the relationship between Hori and Miyamura, two high school kids slowly forming a bond and falling in love - but only so much manga can be adapted and put into a thirteen-episode series. "Horimiya: The Missing Pieces" is here to fix that: It goes back to the beginning of the original series and fills in the pieces of the original manga that were left out in the first adaptation. From silly moments to quiet ones, this is a chance to reconnect with your favorite characters and see what happened between the scenes of the original.

Discussion rules
BEWARE OF SPOILERS. Since all episode discussions are within a single thread, here are some rules to ensure revisits are safe from spoilers.
1. How this thread is organized
- Each top-level comment is a mini-thread for each episode discussion. A new top-level comment will be added whenever another episode is released.
- All discussions must be posted as replies within the appropriate mini-threads only. No discussions should be posted as top-level comments.
- Anything without dedicated mini-threads can be posted under "General chat".
2. How to navigate and avoid spoilers
- Use the "Collapse replies" button to find the appropriate episode discussions more easily, and make potential spoilers less visible.
- You can also use the links at the bottom to jump directly to each episode discussion.
3. When and how to hide spoilers
- Within each mini-thread, discussions about the current and previous episodes are freely allowed.
- But, details about subsequent episodes and source materials are spoilers and must be hidden.
- To hide spoilers, you can follow the "Expandable sections" part of the formatting guide.
Tips on using "Expandable" format for spoilers
Currently there's a flaw where if the comment is collapsed (by using "Collapse replies" or other ways), the hidden parts can still be seen in the small blurbs.
The workaround is to further enclose the spoilers in quote block. See here for an example comment.
Special note:
Since this is a bonus series for the original run of Horimiya, assume there'd be a lot of spoiler for the original show (i.e. details about the original show won't be/ don't have to be hidden). Please watch the original first for the best experience.

EPISODE 1 "Class Trip"
:) I'm glad they included these cute moments. It really does feel like re-visiting an old school year book: some of the faces sort of look familiar but their names have escaped me for the moment, whereas surprisingly I knew Shuu right away, even when I didn't think he was especially stand out as a character. I remember Yuki because of her sleeves as well.
Even in the original run, I really liked how they glossed over Miyamura's being on his period. No one super asked questions, they just sort of...rolled with it and tried to accommodate him. And I also liked Toru's reaction to seeing his friend in a sailor suit: it looks good. that's that. It'd be nice if one day soon it worked like that in our culture too.
The guys look really hot and sweaty in their summer outfits.
Incidentally a lot of young women are forced to wear layers in the intense heat of summer because breasts and nipple impressions seen through shirts are hyper sexualized. It just isn't safe sometimes. To (borrowing a Cantonese phrase) draw the guts onto the doodle: the way that Miyamura has to hide his tattoos or else be considered a delinquent / dangerous / rude person, is somewhat similar to how some girls have to hide their bodies or else be considered sexually available or promiscuous, sexually interested in any observer, or even inviting / deserving of violence. At the very least it would invite commentary of that nature.
That was my experience at least, in middle class suburbia Canada circa 90s-00s. It shouldn't be that way and I hope things would noticeably change within our lifetime.
I really hope the next generations break the US's puritan views on people's bodies. While I can get behind not glorifying/ selling sex to kids, I feel like a lot of body dismorphia and closeted behavior is caused by our extreme sexualization of our natural bodies.

Thanks for posting this!
I remember really enjoying the series when I watched the main series for the first time. I went ahead and read all of the manga as well.
Seeing as how Pieces is sort of an omake collection, how do we want to handle spoilers? Everything up till the end of the original run fair game ? Or Up to the point of the Piece episode? Would people who didn't watch the main series even understand / be interested in Pieces?
Anyway thanks for setting this up : ) Such a clean, sweet series
Hm yeah this is a tricky question. If we think of Pieces as a standalone series then we could treat everything in the original as spoilers. But if we think of Pieces as more like a direct sequel instead I can add a disclaimer that this post contains spoiler for the original and you need to watch that one first.
Do you think Pieces can be enjoyable on its own without having seen the original?
I think the jokes are funnier if people knew who these people are first...and the characters do grow a little so new people may not get why they behave differently between mere episodes. I think.
There is another romantic slice of life, Monthly Girls Nozaki-kun, and they also had a bonus mini season and it also has time skips like Pieces that can be disorienting.
Okay then, watching the original seems quite necessary. I'll add disclaimer.
As someone who only read the manga, and is about to reread it, is this worth watching? I've honestly found myself preferring manga lately because it feels like less of a commitment to read a chapter, and I can more easily skip any parts I'm not enjoying.
It depends if you want to hear their voices and see them animated. For example Yuki swishing her sleeves is cute, and you get more frames of your favorite characters. But time is limited and if your imagination is good and you prefer manga you're not missing out on too much imo
Phew this is the last one (for now...)
Welcome everyone to our watchthrough of Horimiya: The Missing Pieces! As explained in this thread, we're starting a series of weekly-ish episode discussion threads for a few of this season's currently airing shows. For convenience, here's the list of shows and links to their threads. Feel free to participate in any of them.
If there's any other show you'd like a dedicated discussion thread for, do recommend even if someone else already mentioned it! The way this works is to have a thread for shows that's been suggested by at least 2 people (either in that thread or the Recommend summer anime thread). This is meant to avoid flooding the group feeds with too many empty threads, and to let anyone joining a discussion know there's at least one other person who is also interested.
Also let me know if you have any other suggestions or questions.
