Synopsis

This science fiction omnibus depicting a doctor who "treats" robot and humanoid problems takes place in the near future, when humanoids with artificial intelligence account for 10% of the population. The main character, Dr. Sudo Hikaru, also has the undercover name Moggadeet, under which he secretly takes on illegal medical procedures. For example, for a man who inadvertently infected his humanoid wife with a computer virus when illegally backing up her data, Sudo proposes an operation to rewrite her memory using backup data. Could an existence replaced by backup data truly be said to be the same as it was before?

Discussion rules

BEWARE OF SPOILERS. Since all episode discussions are within a single thread, here are some rules to ensure revisits are safe from spoilers.

1. How this thread is organized
  • Each top-level comment is a mini-thread for each episode discussion. A new top-level comment will be added whenever another episode is released.
  • All discussions must be posted as replies within the appropriate mini-threads only. No discussions should be posted as top-level comments.
  • Anything without dedicated mini-threads can be posted under "General chat".
2. How to navigate and avoid spoilers
  • Use the "Collapse replies" button to find the appropriate episode discussions more easily, and make potential spoilers less visible.
  • You can also use the links at the bottom to jump directly to each episode discussion.
3. When and how to hide spoilers
  • Within each mini-thread, discussions about the current and previous episodes are freely allowed.
  • But, details about subsequent episodes and source materials are spoilers and must be hidden.
  • To hide spoilers, you can follow the "Expandable sections" part of the formatting guide.
Tips on using "Expandable" format for spoilers

Currently there's a flaw where if the comment is collapsed (by using "Collapse replies" or other ways), the hidden parts can still be seen in the small blurbs.

The workaround is to further enclose the spoilers in quote block. See here for an example comment.

Welcome everyone to our watchthrough of AI no Idenshi! As explained in this thread, we're starting a series of weekly-ish episode discussions for a few of this season's currently airing shows. For convenience, here's the list of shows and links to their threads. Feel free to participate in any of them.

If there's any other show you'd like a dedicated discussion thread for, do recommend even if someone else already mentioned it! The way this works is to have threads for shows that's been suggested by at least 2 people (either in that thread or the Recommend summer anime thread). This is meant to avoid flooding the group feeds with too many empty threads, and to let anyone joining a discussion know there's at least one other person who is also interested.

Also let me know if you have any suggestions or questions.

I haven't watched it yet, but I heard that Synduality: Noir that just started is very similar in terms of AI (although Syn focuses more on cyberpunk/mecha I believe) and is voiced by the same main actor. Seems to be similar in style to 86.

I enjoyed it, I'm sure I'll enjoy this one as well.

Edit: They are also working on a very good looking mecha game as well, if anyone was watching the PS5 showcase from last year.

I watched episode 1, and I wanted to like this because it seems to want to talk about trans humanism and tech and ethics etc which are all totally in my strike zone.

      But I don't like it.

It can't seem to pick a lane between ecchi or serious......the teen nurse in barbie pink with the shorti-est skirt....giving a young girl a car ride while talking about her dying robot mom.....all while robots have creepy goat eyes and no one seems to be able to emote properly

Chobits did it better: go full ecchi and slip in some human struggles after we have come to care for the characters. Pasocon are much cuter to boot.

It just assumed empathy instead of actually giving viewers a reason to care. The mother in jail, we have been shown nothing between her being fooled and her being old and in jail and ignored by her son.

I guess the biggest flaw about this entire episode is the assumes empathy the series requires from viewers about why they shouldn't back up and restore. Most people think of humans as ghost in the shell: that if you make a perfect copy of all my memories and feelings, that IS me. I don't know of very many people who would have this deep and visceral reaction of "you're not my real mother".

It's like the teleportation problem: what if it's true that the original you is destroyed and a new one emerges? Mostly we don't care and we don't feel bad about it at all: the new one has all my Person and it IS me.

This one doesn't even require a new body. What's the big deal? The series seems to assume everyone has the same instinctual revulsion.

Does the second episode get better?

I'd bet my left nut that no, most people don't think this

Don't worry, I still watching this anime which for me easy can be top-1 or top-2. It's just my time or lazyness, heh.

      • We get here two stories. The main theme of this episode: do something such as toy or robot as have soul or, it was called here, heart.

      • The first is about a pair of a humanoidess and a full robot. This line was appeared mostly only at the beginning with strange scene which was dream, and at the ending. But just read of the one point of this story: the humanoidess cheated the robot with a human. Heh.

      • The second story was main. It's about a boy and a toy robot which had some problem with memory. And the boy had the typical family problem: the mammy and daddy didn't have time for him, so his toy became as… a part of family? Later we find out the mommy bought the used toy, therefore we get also the emotional moment.

      • So the morale [at least for me; yeah, anime mostly shows, doesn't tell] of both stories: the memomy is a heart, a soul.

      • Btw, we get many frames of the [angry] milf, you can taste it again: one, two, three, four, not angry.

      • It's not a strong side of this anime but we get some not bad backgrounds: one, two.

The episode is more like OVA, because of fan-service [don't worry, there's reason], and many stories.

      • And we get many frames of the nurse: doki, get, got, getten, reverse

      • The first case is about a nurse friend which wants to help find out other doctor sides… Via visual novels:

        1. A classic school romcom and morning running, another doki.

        2. A classic rich family and morning at the bad. Not so much frames I got from there, only this.

        3. And… yeah, bl with the doctor as bot?

Of course, again many frames with the nurse: angry, blush, hide eyes, >_<, sus, ¯\_(ツ)_/¯, angry sus.

      • The second case is about a boy which likes one girl [or her body?], and his [moslty porn] addiction to virtual copy. A bonus for humanoids that they're better in this case, because the boy is human, and doesn't feel the «touch».

Boy somehow he got connection with real one, and very close but fucked during one talk because he call without thinking her by the name of game/program.

      • The third story is classic and about cheating. The humanoid cheated several times, and got hope on a switcher. But it was a false hope, because once you cheated you already change a parnter mind. And depending on the switcher (you can put here anything, for example [magic] pills), not partner doesn't change situation so much.

The name of the episode is 4 cases but there's no fourth, only scenes with blood at the beginning and the ending.
