Synopsis
When Saku took in a stray black cat, she never expected that he would become the equivalent of a housekeeping life partner. But Yukichi, a giant cat who towers over Saku, is not your ordinary feline. He takes great pride in his culinary skills, and a good sale at the supermarket always gets his whiskers twitching. Saku may not have her act together yet, but at least she has Yukichi!

Discussion rules
BEWARE OF SPOILERS. Since all episode discussions are within a single thread, here are some rules to ensure revisits are safe from spoilers.
1. How this thread is organized
- Each top-level comment is a mini-thread for each episode discussion. A new top-level comment will be added whenever another episode is released.
- All discussions must be posted as replies within the appropriate mini-threads only. No discussions should be posted as top-level comments.
- Anything without dedicated mini-threads can be posted under "General chat".
2. How to navigate and avoid spoilers
- Use the "Collapse replies" button to find the appropriate episode discussions more easily, and make potential spoilers less visible.
- You can also use the links at the bottom to jump directly to each episode discussion.
3. When and how to hide spoilers
- Within each mini-thread, discussions about the current and previous episodes are freely allowed.
- But, details about subsequent episodes and source materials are spoilers and must be hidden.
- To hide spoilers, you can follow the "Expandable sections" part of the formatting guide.
Tips on using "Expandable" format for spoilers
Currently there's a flaw where if the comment is collapsed (by using "Collapse replies" or other ways), the hidden parts can still be seen in the small blurbs.
The workaround is to further enclose the spoilers in quote block. See here for an example comment.

General chat & misc discussion
Just wanted to give a huge thank you @mundane_and_naive for posting these discussion threads. I've fallen far behind on my anime backlog and can't contribute to the conversations currently, but just seeing the existence of the discussion topics has gotten me interested in a few shows.
For example this one for Dekiru Neko wa Kyou mo Yuuutsu, combined with hearing the cute ending theme on Spotify (here's a YouTube link), has made me want to watch this one when I get a chance.
Your posts are having an impact, on one person at least. I'm sure I'm not the only one. Thank you!
Thanks for the kind words! Yeah that's how recommendations get ya, seeing it enough times and you'd be like "sure, why not" :)
Welcome everyone to our watchthrough of Dekineko! As explained in this thread, we're starting a series of weekly-ish episode discussions for a few of this season's currently airing shows. For convenience, here's the list of shows and links to their threads. Feel free to participate in any of them.
If there's any other show you'd like a dedicated discussion thread for, do recommend even if someone else already mentioned it! The way this works is to have threads for shows that's been suggested by at least 2 people (either in that thread or the Recommend summer anime thread). This is meant to avoid flooding the group feeds with too many empty threads, and to let anyone joining a discussion know there's at least one other person who is also interested.
Let me know if you have any suggestions or questions.
EPISODE 1 "The Masterful Cat Is Depressed Again Today"
EPISODE 2 "The Masterful Cat Has Grown Big"
I liked this episode better than the first one. The distracting "camera work" is gone and the characters are starting to get more depth. I'm interested in the boss character and how integral to the series he'll be. He seems like he could be a great foil to the main character's wackiness. Speaking of, I'm still not sold on her. I get that she is supposed to be a wreck, but it's not coming off as endearing to me, but more annoyance at her. I hope that she is fleshed out more as the series goes along.
That's a good thing; I was interested in this show for the concept but the studio responsible for it is famous for their bizzare animation and it really put a damper on my enthusiasm.
I'll still wait until the end of the season, though, because I prefer to binge my anime.
Hmm, having caught up with the translated manga, I would say Saku's more of a deuteragonist than the main character.
She herself is a straight man for 'The Masterful Cat's/ Yukichi's absurd competency, and in return is a prop for the author to use for various situations. She does get fleshed out more, but her core character is pretty consistent. If you want her to become more independent / mature / competent when at home, it's not really what the author was going for with the relationship dynamic between Saku and Yukichi from my perspective.
I would say that if you view the cat as the main character and his owner as his pet, the series is pretty delightful! That's the perspective I have, and Saku's characterization as a lazy affectionate dog/cat that happens to have a job stays very consistent.
I hope they keep some of the slow burn from the manga, because I feel that some of the history hits harder after you're more familiar with the characters. Everyone gets fleshed out more, but the history is pretty staggered, it doesn't front load with history and characterization.
Is there an explanation why Saku seems competent at work but is such a mess at home? The disconnect is interesting but I'm wondering if it's addressed at all or just something that I find puzzling.
I will watch future episodes with your advice in mind and see if I find her more tolerable. Thank you!
Hmm, I think it's less explained and more inferred. She has a really, really hard time at self care, completely spent after work and crashing.
Interesting! I can relate to that. I'll keep watching and see if she grows on me. Thanks!
