I'm pleasantly surprised whenever I see a series actually get an ending these days. All too often a series overstays its welcome or sadly never reaches its conclusion before the author passes away.

I only stuck with the anime for about 3 seasons. Was the latter end of the series worth checking out?

I remember thinking the same thing. I read several chapters and told myself that maybe I'd pick it back up if it ever ends. I never got past the first few bits of One Piece for the same reason. I've been following Hajime no Ippo for about 20 years now. I'm kind of just invested at this point, but it's become kind of a drag. So nowadays I usually don't pick up a manga unless it's ended or about to end.

I guess now that it has an ending I'll get started again.

One Piece is in its final saga now and will probably end within the next 5 years or so. It's massive, but it surprisingly doesn't feel padded.

I haven't caught up, I binged the manga until I got like 1/4 or so the way through before taking a break, but I felt like the pacing was pretty good. If anyone watches the anime but thinks the pacing isn't good or that the series is too long, try the manga. It's a lot faster and there's no filler.
Also check out the fanmade "One Pace" edit. I haven't seen it but I heard about it and it sounds like a great idea.
There's also going to be a new anime that redoes the story more accurately called "The One Piece" which I guess is their Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood moment.

Can confirm One Pace is great. It actually makes the anime enjoyable.

I started reading Attack on Titan with several chapters left in the series. After catching up, it was fun to finish up the last few chapters along with everyone else. The ending ended up not being terribly well received in general (although I thought it was ok), so I was a little put off by the overwhelming negativity, but I felt like that was the perfect timing for me.

I mean, if you read a chapter a day, it'll take you three years to catch up. And once we find out what the One Piece is, you're not dodging that spoiler

Pffft nobody reads a chapter a day unless we have to :) I suppose one could even race through the entire decades worth in three weeks (~35 a day) when the end is announced.

I’d agree that it’s an excessively slow pace… if not for the fact that I just started reading it in Japanese, and it took me about three hours to get to the end of chapter 2. So I’m currently estimating it’ll take me something more on the order of five years, just to be safe (hopefully after a hundred chapters or so I’ll get faster)

I've only heard this second hand, but originally it was going to be longer. The writer cut it short due to harassment from fans to publish faster.

This is correct. Horikoshi himself has said he had a lot more he wanted to tell in the story, but his health was failing him. The series started going on frequent breaks over the past three years.

After 10 years it might be a good idea to take a break or something. Just look at Togashi, who has a bunch of loose ends in Hunter x Hunter but is just physically unable to continue due to poor health. I feel bad for the guy. It seems like the work is so brutal that many manga artists have health issues. They really need to figure out some better work-life balance in this industry if they don't want to keep destroying their talent.

Eiichiro Oda of One Piece is on a schedule with frequent breaks, and that seems to be working for him. There are also plenty of monthly and even biweekly series with perfectly fine pacing.

I don't think mangaka typically have that much control over their schedules, especially at a weekly manga magazine. Like you said, Togashi is a special case, and I'd say Oda also is due to the massive popularity of One Piece. It's the most popular franchise in Japan, and honestly awe-inspiring in how consistent the quality is given how long it's gone on.

For others, they're kind of living on the edge unless they reach a certain level of popularity. It's incredibly easy for a manga to get axed at Weekly Shonen Jump if the votes are low. I've seen many series end at Chapter 15, and at least one abruptly stop around 60 after a few slower-paced chapters got more poorly voted.

Basically, the work crunch for WSJ is just bad. Even without fan pressure, that sort of workload easily leads to creative and physical burnout. I think recently things are starting to change since some mangaka seem to be getting more hiatuses, but... Well, it still seems to be limited to the more successful series.

You're right on every point. This is part of why I follow many monthly series. I know they have healthier schedules. There's no easy fix for WSJ without making many series non-weekly.

Togashi is married to Naoko Takeuchi, the manga artist of Sailor Moon.[4][5][8] The two were introduced at a party hosted by Kazushi Hagiwara in August 1997. The following year, Takeuchi assisted Togashi for a short time by adding screentone to his manga Hunter × Hunter.HxH wiki

            Other trivia

He has a younger brother named Hideaki Togashi, who is also a manga artist.

The Togashi Paper Store run by his mother is still open in Shinjō, Yamagata. She welcomes fans and sells limited-edition Togashi goods.[29]

Without delving too much into details, I think as the story progressed the author tried to make it more complex but came short. He was good with simple premises and characters, it's why I liked the story in the first place, but I think he definitely failed on writing more complex characters or events. This was especially true for the villains, one of which was actually kind of a main character too.

As a result of this, I gradually lost my interest and quit during the final arc. But again, I think personal experience is more important than what others think about a story. If you feel like there is something worth checking out, there is no harm in giving the story a chance.

I discussed the series with someone who said later on they tried to explain how the powers worked, instead of leaving it as unexplained scifi magic. She felt this actually reduced her suspension of disbelief since it raised more questions than it answered, but if you just didn't explain it nobody would've been worried about it.

honestly, pleasantly surprised the All Might himself is still alive, and Deku made it to the end without becoming someone terrible. It looks like many of the original class made it as well, and I'm not sure now who died, but quite encouraging that it wasn't too many of them.

I stopped quite early on, when the weird hands villain brought in that psychopathic person and I think two others. I really wasn't in good shape to be reading about folks trying to do good things getting crushed.

Nice! Looking forward to jumping back in

I'll need to think about it a bit. I was initially mixed on the SnK ending, but grew to really like it over a few weeks. But this reminds me of Bleach, where I felt empty after.
