New Gundam TV series airs 2027.

    • Set in the same universe as the Gundam Rogue Orbit game
    • Directed by Kamiyama Kenji (GITS SAC, Eden of the East)
    • Animation will be by Sola (GITS SAC 2045)

The concept of Gundam vs aliens sounds like it might be good, but this trailer honestly feels a little bland. Also not doing themselves any favours with that name...

Grew up on Gundam (wing through seed stuff mostly) but it is hard after a point to care too much. It’s a decent story but they seem to like hitting the same beats

It's a bit of a dilemma since it's the old timers who are dropping money on the model kits and other merch (i.e. where Bamco is actually making the money), so you can't piss them off too much by making it radically different from what they like to see.

At the same time, Bamco has to also build new audiences for the franchise. I can't imagine any kids these days caring about Gundam at all (in Japan or elsewhere), which is going to be an increasingly serious problem for them going forwards.

Counter to everyone here, I love Gundam, and all the new work has been incredible. MSG has never been in a better place than now.

Gundam Hathaway: The Sorcery of Nymph Circe with it's deeply human and cathartic storylines to Witch From Mercury, being a rather outright love story of two women set among the backdrop of royalty and mechas in space.

Everything has just been so varied and different in vibe and scope, and they keep pushing the franchise in new and interesting directions.

Ever since Gundam Unicorn they have just been hitting it out the park (the greatest mecha film of all time, just beautiful).

The animation on this, the designs, the possibly alien (I don't think they are...), all of it just looks incredible.

And if you're on tumblr, gen-z and gen-a are huge into mechas (... and uh, mecha pilots...), there is more universal appreciation for mecha anime than I have ever seen, used to be a joke, now it's seen as quality work.

Whenever I see a new Gundam series announced it makes me think it's finally time to dive in to the franchise, but then I remember how big it is and end up watching something more self-contained. I know you don't have to watch everything, but for series like this I usually like to start with the originals and watch through things in release order.

I still need to finally get around to finish Armored Trooper VOTOMS before I think about picking up another one, but I'm glad to see the series keep growing for when I one day start watching.
