I believe this is the first time Claire has outright failed at making a gourmet version of a product, but it might just be the most entertaining of all of them, IMO. What an emotional rollercoaster. Who knew Starburst, of all things, would be the most difficult to replicate?

I especially loved the team effort at the end and how her finished product was actually less gourmet than the original. And I loved the shout out to Orville Peck by Brad midway through, too. He has good taste in music.

I think it might just be that confectionery is a totally different knowledge base and skill set from baking/pastry. Sugar is super sensitive to humidity and temperature and behaves different based on a lot of random factors. That plus it’s really time sensitive and involves tons of precisely timed work with your hands. Seems like the sort of thing that takes a ton of practice to get consistent results with that you’re unlikely to just figure out on a few days.

Also Claire’s always seemed to kind of hate those aspects of it, like tempering chocolate.

The only way this could have gone worse would be if it involved tempered chocolate.

Claire was promised 10% culinary and 90% party, but that was NOT the case! In most of her videos she seems to enjoy the discovery process, but she seemed to outright hate this assignment. I can't say I blame her either. By the end I wanted it to be over for her sake.

I thought her idea to use the stand mixer to help with pulling the taffy was brilliant, but I got incredibly nervous when she tried using it while on AND raised, especially because the technique required her to get her hands up in there frequently. To those that have never used one, they don't lock into place while up and can easily drop with little force, (which is exactly what happened). Thankfully she wasn't injured. It was going slowly enough that it probably wouldn't have done much damage, but the kitchen safety part of me was on edge the whole time.
