Impossible doesn't have that problem, and has become my goto for fast food options.

I am very against removing animals from agriculture, however, removing animals from industrialized meat production is a critical issue.

You eliminate beef and chicken from the major fast-food chains and the need for meat production drops significantly.

Plant-based meat alternatives are clearly a trend that has potential but I'm more looking forward to "real" lab-grown meat. Because it's the real thing. It's one of these areas where further research is needed and it might be years and decade before production runs up to profitable levels but it's moving fast and just makes so much sense. I see a future in which people wince at the thought of actual animals once having been slaughtered for the beef in their hamburgers.

That’s been my reality for years, haha. I don’t think most people think about the animals that they’re eating. I don’t think it’s necessarily a bad thing, though. Many people would go hungry with our current system if they had to be more mindful of what they were eating, how it was treated, etc.

I grew up on a farm, and that put me in much closer contact with my food. Even when I know they were treated well (I bottle fed and cared for a lamb that eventually went to slaughter), I can’t stand the thought of eating them. It’s just bizarre to my brain.

That said, I’m ecstatic about the prospect of lab grown meat. Not a huge fan of the “plants trying to be meat” thing. I will say bean burgers are delicious.

I'll never be proud of it but I can morally justify to myself that an animal was slaughtered to provide meat I eat. Animals get quite brutally killed in the wild by other animal predators. It's kinda sorta "natural", on a level of, say, spraying a corn field with poison and using huge machines to harvest, package and transport the corn.

Somehow the availability of lab-grown meat would change that for me. No animal has to be killed, less space wasted on pastures and growing plants just for feeding (if I'm really talking about the large-scale ecological impact and animals killed or made extinct to make room for it, that's probably what I should be concerned about). It seems like it's removing a lot of excuses from the equation (honestly: plant-based alternatives don't really taste like meat) and is just a net positive development.

Bean burgers are really good, but there is still something to be said for the texture of meat substitutes, it's hard to give a black bean burger a good crunch, or even just avoid mushiness. Best I've done is by tempura battering the patty and deep frying it, which is a lot of extra work.

I do tend to buy store-bought black bean burgers. Specifically the 1/4 pound chipotle Morningstar variety. I’ve never been able to find a good “make your own” recipe.

Aldi has these wonderful southwestern chipotle patties, with chopped up sweet peppers and stuff in them, they're my go-to if I'm not just making bean burgers because I've got leftover beans.

I love me some Aldi. Wish there was one close to me.

    From the article: ...

    From the article:

The beef contained 22 metabolites that the plant substitute did not. The plant-based substitute contained 31 metabolites that meat did not. The greatest distinctions occurred in amino acids, dipeptides, vitamins, phenols, and types of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids found in these products.

    ...

“It is important for consumers to understand that these products should not be viewed as nutritionally interchangeable, but that’s not to say that one is better than the other,”
