I've been playing 40k on and off for about 20 years now, started in 3rd edition. My main and favorite faction is Tyranids so really happy about this launch box! Let me know if you have any questions.

If you have a local warhammer store nearby you can paint your first mini for free and take it home with you (a space marine intercessor). If you don't you can look up basic guides but the painting process as a beginner is pretty simple:
undercoat with primer after assembly (make sure you removed all the mould lines!)
paint the base color over everything (the color that is used the most)
paint a technical paint for the base
Then use nuln oil on everything (or another shade) for good shading
Obviously there's way more techniques like contrast and speed painting. A good youtube video that also explains the assembly process is this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LLJwh4ClZ6U
One important thing to keep in mind is that mistakes happen! I have minis with molten glue joints, bad paints, remaining mold lines after painting etc but you can pass of almost anything as battle damage. It doesnt have to look like the box art or pros, as long as you think it looks good enough you should be content :)
Edit: Also some tools you should probably want for assembly (note that these are things I recommend so Id also advise doing some research yourself):
Either a hobby knife or sanding material (eg sanding sponges are very nice for this) to remove mould lines and to remove leftover sprue after you cut it off
A pair of cutters. If you are on a budget nail clippers work but I obviously wouldnt recommend lol. Budget option is something like a tamiya / citadel starter cutters and the best option would be a DSPIAE 3.0, but these are quite exotic
Definitely get different plastic glue than the citadel one, it takes long to dry and if you miss it melts the plastic very bad. I personally use tamiya quick cement since its capillary action.
You need primer for your mini, you can also order this at a warhammer store. Personally I'd recommend grey seer as the catch all primer
For paint the brands to look for are citadel (most expensive, but you can find color guides eg on the leviathan page), vallejo (same quality but cheaper and in a better bottle) and army painter
Theres many more tools I use but one big problem you might have is that you start overpurchasing, so try to keep it to the essentials :P (I certainly overpurchased in the beginning!)

Heya, nice to see you're getting started with Warhammer! As for your question as of the new edition (10th) codexes are online and free! As such I'd recommend against buying one. You can find yours...

Thanks for the reply! I’m still going back and forth on a faction. Leaning Daemons or Drukhari now.
Seems like Daemons don’t really fit the theme of the rest of 40K, but I don’t know if that matters or not. Are both factions relatively up to date? Any reason (outside of looks / preference) to pick one or the other if my main goal is to play the game?

Any faction that is not chaos spacies or the normal spacies will usually be kind of slept on by GW as they aren't the "poster boys" but that being said you should just pick whatever is cool / you want to play and not care about any tier lists, availability etc. I'd argue that if one of the factions you pick (such as the death guard, arguably the worst in the current state of the game) is that bad then your opponent in a casual setting should account for that by balancing your match if he's not a twerp. That being said if you /do/ care about tier lists both drukhari and chaos daemons are currently around the same strength, so it doesn't really matter.

If you haven't read anything I'd suggest starting a smaller series before delving deep into the Horus Heresy. From the top of my mind I'd suggest these:
Night Lords Trilogy - a real good and grim start with great characters
Eisenhorn - my favorite. It follows Inquisitors and their warbands. You can easily continue it with Ravenor and now Bequin. All trilogies.
Gaunt's Ghosts - Follows a guard regiment and their struggles and victories.
Ciaphas Cain - if you're more into something slightly more fun

Legion (a personal favorite)
A Thousand Sons
The First Heretic
Prospero Burns
Know No Fear (probably the best one)
Betrayer
Scars
Path of Heaven
Praetorian of Dorn
Master of Mankind
Of course most of the others are very readable, and some quite enjoyable as well. But these game to mind first.
Nice thanks for the heads up! I quite like blasting through a whole series in a row so I'll probably keep going sequentially, but I'll keep an eye out for those specific books.

It is different from non-fantasy Total War games in a another of ways but leading a Waagghhh with Grimgor is so much fun!
I played Rome years ago. I think you might be referring to Rome II which was poorly optimized at launch and super buggy. I tried it after some patches and it okay. I tried it again a few months ago and I could not get into it at all. If your looking for a great total war game in a non-fantasy setting then it's recommend Shogun II. It might be a bit dated, but it is a true total war experience.
I just looked on steam and realized there are multiple total war warhammer games. Is there a particular one that stands out or should a newbie just go for the most recent release?

For Warhammer, I'd recommend getting Warhammer 2 and 1 when they're on Sale. That way you can you get the Old World DLC which combines both games. There's a ton of content to play and lots of dlc to pick up when there's a sale.

Going over to a friend's house in a week and we're going to try out 10th, since the points should be dropping on the 16th and I believe the index's, if not already released, should be out soon. I gotta motivate to read the new rules this week.

It also lets me enjoy the guilty pleasure every once in awhile of going wild on a shipping box like a kid with a rattle can.
I wanted to get into it so bad but my local community sought to be as unwelcoming and alienating as possible, so I moved on. Probably a good decision for my wallet anyway.

Despite 20 years of 40k books and even longer Warhammer Fantasy RPGs, I never got into eithers' tabletop. Between price and horrible LFGS dwellers, just don't have the patience for painting and army. I do play everything from the Fantasy Flight Games' RPG line, and recently picked up old editions of Necromunda (a smaller scale gang war simulator), though.

I'll give TTS a look, thanks. That said, between playing Necromunda with paper cutouts and my IRL group being on board with giving Rogue Trader a chance (finally, I've been beating that drum for eight years), it's not exactly a high priority.
Could you, or others for that matter, recommend me an easy beginner's faction for when I get to TTS? I've been thinking of Custodes, since it seems like a low model-count army with rather straight-forward tactics where base troops are on par with others' elites (=easy to manage?). If it matters, my end goal would be advancing to my favourite faction: Imperial Guard/Astra Militarum.
It's hard to recommend anything at the moment, since new rules launched basically this weekend. Custodes is probably the best to start with since even though they are not simple there are fewer...
It's hard to recommend anything at the moment, since new rules launched basically this weekend. Custodes is probably the best to start with since even though they are not simple there are fewer models that you need to keep track of rules for. It won't feel much like guard will, but it will teach the basics.
Also if you get some people to help or are also new there isn't a major issue with just jumping right into guard if you really wanted to.
Do you have to purchase anything in addition to table top simulator? Is the 40k stuff just a free community made addition? I might be interested in trying it out before my first set of minis arrives 😁

Hi there. I’m just getting started. I went into a local shop for the first time yesterday. I think I may start with the Chaos Daemons combat patrol. Is it worth it to buy a codex considering 10e just came out? How does that work?
Don't buy the 9th edition codexes unless you just want it for lore, pictures, to play 9th edition, etc
The core rules for 10th edition, and the sort of temporary rules per army (until they get 10th edition codexes later) can be found here:
https://www.warhammer-community.com/warhammer-40000-downloads/
Heya, nice to see you're getting started with Warhammer! As for your question as of the new edition (10th) codexes are online and free! As such I'd recommend against buying one. You can find yours here: https://www.warhammer-community.com/2023/06/13/free-chaos-index-cards-let-the-galaxy-burn-with-rules-for-six-factions/
Thanks in advance!

I am slowly working through painting my Tyranids I’ve had for over a decade, so I totally understand! Stopped on them to spend some time learning new skills by following Darren Latham’s Lord of Blights masterclass series. I don’t think I’ve ever spent so much time on this small of a model.
I really like 40k lore but I don't play the game. I've mostly been reading/painting/playing Age Of Sigmar, the "new" Games Workshop fantasy setting.

Shogun 2 is a great place to start IMO! Easy to get into and considered the most balanced and optimized game. It's a good starting point for total war in general.
For Warhammer, I'd recommend getting Warhammer 2 and 1 when they're on Sale. That way you can you get the Old World DLC which combines both games. There's a ton of content to play and lots of dlc to pick up when there's a sale.
I noticed that the the latest game + all DLC is ~$200. That is quite a bit, lol.
Jumping back in after a year and a half hiatus, as I was unhappy with 9th Edition, so my armies gathered dust while I played Age of Sigmar and Bolt Action instead.
Going over to a friend's house in a week and we're going to try out 10th, since the points should be dropping on the 16th and I believe the index's, if not already released, should be out soon. I gotta motivate to read the new rules this week.
I tried before but only made it ot he painting stage and got frustrated. Though I did just pick up the starter set for Star Wars Shatterpoint so I'm going to have give painting another try so might pull out my space marines again.
I found an airbrush to vastly increase my enjoyment out of painting. I grabbed a cheap kit that had a portable compressor and airbrush together for like $70 and it's done a great job for well over a year now.
That is a bummer! Some of the people the miniature gaming community attracts are the worst.
Yikes. Hopefully either people are nice at my local store, or I can convince friends to play =)
Take a look into Table Top Simulator, there are some solid options for playing 40k even with the new 10th edition rules just being released.
Only if you actually are interested in the game, if not hopefully the new books are treating you well. Looking forward to Renegades: Harrowmaster, by Mike Brooks soon.
Custodes is probably the best to start with since even though they are not simple there are fewer models that you need to keep track of rules for. It won't feel much like guard will, but it will teach the basics.
Also if you get some people to help or are also new there isn't a major issue with just jumping right into guard if you really wanted to.
There are a couple discords that should be able to help if troubles:

Also just in-case you didn't see the new warhammer app is free for some amount of time and has all the rules. https://www.warhammer-community.com/2023/06/21/download-the-all-new-warhammer-40000-app-for-free/
Do you have to purchase anything in addition to table top simulator? Is the 40k stuff just a free community made addition?
I might be interested in trying it out before my first set of minis arrives 😁
As far as I know all the 40k stuff for TTS is community made shared through steam workshop so you just need a valid copy of TTS.
I don't know if anyone has made a specific 10th edition guide, but the general info for 9th should get things setup. I am going to be going to update my files for 10th this weekend, so hopefully nothing is crazy different.

I was just going down this rabbit hole last night by chance and reading all of the replies here has inspired me to stop by the local games store on my way home from work and check it out.
