I think this is mostly due to tildes being young. It's not yet worth specializing communities into niche interests because the community is not yet large enough to drive those communities forward, and creating them prematurely would result in community fragmentation.

The fediverse sounds good on paper, but the fact that its loudest proponents bring massive crypto-bro energy might kill it before it takes off.

Both are social deduction games that set a goal ancillary to discovering one or more players identity. Don't mess with Cthulhu requires finding a number of hidden objectives. Leaders of Euphoria not only requires finding the leader, but also killing them (in game).

I live in a super urban area. The only plants we have are non-native trees and whatever coked out weeds grow through cracks in the cement and revel in the smog. I grew up in a rural area and am working my way back out of this concrete hellhole as fast as I can manage.

For the specialty stuff, sure, but there are a few things you can almost guarantee you're gonna need one day:

    A drill and bits

    Screwdrivers, flat and Phillips

    Adjustable wrench

    Hammer

    Stud finder

Outlet tester: really not that expensive and way more informative and easier to use than the "plug a lamp into it" approach

Flashlight: Most drill brands also make a flashlight. It sounds like overkill, but it's been incredible. Ours is bright and has an adjustable head, and also a hook right at the balance point so it can hang like a lamp if we need it to.

    scissors

    edit: While I'm here...

    Consumables:

    hanging nails

    screws and drywall anchors

hole filler, just a little tiny one.

Paint samples in the colors of your walls and ceilings

    Optionals:

Alan keys: if all of your furniture comes from Ikea, a higher quality key than the one they include will be significantly more comfortable and prevent stripping heads.

rj45 crimp and ends: make your own ethernet cables in custom lengths

fuse box tester: to map which outlet goes to which fuse

    Staple gun and staples

It picks up once you have more than one skill set, and doing the skill challenges does a decent job of encouraging you to learn how to use them.

Was that every "What should I name my critter?" post? While I miss the photos, I do not miss the lack of creativity.

I wanted to get into it so bad but my local community sought to be as unwelcoming and alienating as possible, so I moved on. Probably a good decision for my wallet anyway.

Actually, to IKEAs credit, they only lgbt-advertised exactly once with Blahaj, only few years after the establishment of the meme, and they used that ad in support of lgbt rights. I also recall that blahaj was scheduled for the end of production but they decided to extend it because it was so important to the community? They've actually been a really good sport about it.
