Card games

Just joined the site. Looking to see if anybody here plays TCG's.
What games, formats, decks, etc y'all play.
I play Magic and Dragon Ball Super.
Used to play Yu-Gi-Oh, Vanguard, and the previous DBZ card game that was far from understandable, lol.

I've played a lot of different card games over the years, but Magic is the only one that I've ever really gotten into in depth. I played a lot of Magic Online while I was in university (around 2003 or so), playing constructed heavily and the occasional draft. I did very well at it for quite a while, generally having my constructed Elo around 1800, which was quite high at that time (I have no idea what the ratings are like on MTGO now, but you used to start at 1600 and seeing someone over 1900 was extremely rare).

Magic Arena (kind of the Hearthstone-ized version of Magic) just started its open beta a couple of weeks ago, so I've been playing that a decent amount recently. I'm not planning to put much money into it, but I'm really enjoying it so far.

It's great to play "full" Magic again, but in a more modern interface with it being at least somewhat reasonable to play without having to dump hundreds of dollars into it initially. I've done a number of drafts and sealed events already and managed to put together a reasonable constructed deck, with only putting in about $10 total. That never would have been possible with physical cards or on MTGO, where $10 wouldn't have even paid for one draft.

I'm getting a new pc in about a month. I'll have to check out Magic Arena once it's here. Can be fun to play 2 headed giant online with a mate in the room.

WTB two-headed giant multiplayer in MTG: Arena. ;) I always loved that format when playing just for fun with friends so would love to see it in MTG:A eventually, too.

Don't know about card video games. I try them for a minute but unless I'm previously invested I dip out.

I didn't know what an LCG was so I looked it up. I agree with you, LCGs are much better than TCGs. Though to be honest, I haven't actually played any of those ones, so this is from a theoretical standpoint. The thing that always bothered me with TCGs is that they inherently favor the people who have spent the most money collecting cards. Both kinds of games are rather transparent money-grabs, but LCGs seem to at least be more fair and transparent about it.

That being said, I really do like the competitive "PvP" nature of most TCGs. The only thing I don't really like about them is that many of the more modern ones seem overly complex.

If you want to be in the meta and be a top player, you don't even need to get super expensive cards, just know how to synergize what's out. But that's why I think TCG's are more fun. The strive to make a better ship and be a better player is more passionate than LCG's with friends.

        Complexity is up to beholder

Is Dominion considered a Living Card Game? I've played that a lot, and own about half the expansion packs.

But I'm sort of trying to change that I guess. I backed the kickstarter for The Binding of Isaac: The Four Souls and should have that here in a few months or so hopefully. I've never really invested time into a card game but being a huge fan of BoI I had to pick it up. I don't really have anyone to play with but maybe one day I can find some people to play.

I'll have to see how much that costs. About to get some new roommates who'll at least give me a couple games to justify the price, lol.

I don't, but with the excitement of the upcoming KeyForge I looked into what similar games there are and came across Ashes: Rise of the Phoenixborn, which is a self-contained game with several differently character decks and associated dice. I've not played it much yet but it's been good fun (and surprisingly thinky) in my plays so far. There are like another dozen or so extra decks you can buy if you get bored with the base game too.

While it's not a paper TCG, I do want to call out that I'm very much looking forward to Artifact, Valve's DTCG set in the Dota universe. Sure, it's not Half-Life 3, but the lane mechanics and regenerating heroes are interesting mechanics.

I've wanted to get into paper Magic, but didn't have enough friends interested, nor am I the type to go to a games tore for Friday night magic. MTGO looked like it was just an excuse for paper magic, and—like many board games and the like—I don't think it did the paper → digital transition well. (Magic origins, however, seems interesting, but it's too late when Artifact is on the horizon.) I tried hearthstone, but I dislike the grind required, and was turned off by it real quick.

So it looks for me that Artifact is checking all the boxes for me around now. I have a beta key, just waiting for the public beta to start.

I haven't really played since Ixalan. Kinda thought I'd come back for Ravnica but instead I've been doing other stuff. We'll see what next block looks like I guess...

If you like magic but not your cards cycling out, I will always recommend commander as a fun format to bullshit with friends.

I mostly play Modern and Commander, I guess. I typically play at the Pre-Releases, but not regularly at FNM or anything. My issue isn't the cards cycling out, it's just that the gameplay doesn't grab me as much. Trying to sort through thousands of cards to build a deck and keep track of hundreds of abilities and interactions is just daunting. I started playing during Theros as well after my friends got me (back) into it, but it's just not been a consistent draw for me since then.

Commander will always be my favorite game to go to when I wanna play with my buddies, but you can only make so many decks without doing something wild and busted that nobody would think of before. And those kinds of strategies take a wild train of thought or a good list off the internet.
What Commander decks do you run?

Mostly Hearthstone, but I really like Slay the Spire and would go full bore on it once it makes its way to mobile. StS is a deckbuilder roguelike, similar to Hearthstone's Dungeon Run, each round of combat you get to discover a card for your deck, events and elites can get you passive relics, and there's a mechanic that let's you remove cards as well, so there's always a chance to turn a run around, and it updated every week until it gets out of Early Access.
