I haven't played Factorio in a few years now. I think it was just before kovarex went a bit mental after promoting a few of Uncle Bob's programming videos and then started telling people to shove their opinions up their ass when some people pointed out that Uncle Bob is a sexist.
I think it then turned out there were a few comments on kovarex's Reddit account defending teacher pupil sexual relationships, weird guy.
Really fun game though, definitely a crazy time sink. One of those games where you look at the clock when you start playing and it's 5pm then you glance away, glance back and it's 2am!
Yeah, one of those situations where you have to decide if you can appreciate the art while ignoring the nonsense coming out of the mouth of the artist.

To be fair, my understanding of the origin of space exploration was basically the factorio devs original announced plan that "after launching the rocket we'll have space travel", followed by "actually the game's long enough already, we're putting that on hold". Then modders went "Well if you're not going to do it, we'll do our spin on it". And that spin was popular enough that Wube hired the dev when they decided that actually they were going to add it after all.
Been a bit since I've played Factorio, but will definitely pick up this expansion when it's released. As a side note, the animation on those engines looks AMAZING. Seriously love the art direction.

I still play factorio regularly but I have not played vanilla in years. I don't think I care about space exploration but shorter and simpler. I'm really curious about how they'll improve trains,...

That said I'll probably buy it anyway, specially since I assume most mods will require it eventually and wube has been very good at improving the base game when making modded content "official".
From the FFF: I don't think most mods will require the expansion based on this.
From the FFF:
In the previous news about the expansion FFF-367, we declared that the content will be technically a mod taking advantage of the updated engine. What this means is that a lot of the improvements will be for all players, regardless of them having the expansion or not.
I don't think most mods will require the expansion based on this.

e: nevermind
I was worried about the space age mod causing drama over this, but it looks like they hired the guy, awesome news.

The modder is mad talented, skilled, and passionate.
They would have to be mad to pass up once-in-a-century talent like that.

Looks like it's going to be a year or more until release, so it'll be a while.
Well shit, I was just starting to become a productive member of society again.

It's funny, I'm excited for this and I've never actually launched a rocket! Time to fall back into the Factorio hole!
Yo!!! Literally just beat the game like 2 days ago. I thought my factory was done growing but it turns out that I was wrong; the factory must grow.
