10 years later, my opinion of GTA 5 is that they took a huge step backwards with the insane loading screens and the ridiculous microtransactions. Now it's been so long that GTA6 makes no difference to me if it ever comes out at all, and I know the microtransactions in that game are going to be even worse.
Weren't the micro transactions limited to online? Personally, I don't really mind as long as they stay there. I have never even started a game of GTAV or RDR2 multiplayer because of them, but if I...

Personally, I don't really mind as long as they stay there. I have never even started a game of GTAV or RDR2 multiplayer because of them, but if I can still get a great single player game I'm happy enough to purchase.
I believe so, yes, but I also think that the word "GTA V" nowadays is synonymous to the online part. That's what keeps people coming back - I don't know a single person that still plays it for the...

I believe so, yes, but I also think that the word "GTA V" nowadays is synonymous to the online part. That's what keeps people coming back - I don't know a single person that still plays it for the single player aspect but that is of course anecdotal

I remember how bitter I was when I realised what they'd done. Tried online, hated it, never played it again until 2022 and then logged in to absolute mayhem of jobs, heists, hangouts and whatever else was going on.
Gta5 is just fallout 4s radial questions gone mad with power for the sake of engagement and it is beyond hideous to play. Sure it's profitable, but at what cost?
Could not agree more. I played GTAO quite a bit with a friend last year exactly because it's fun to just mess around - but sure enough, it quickly became a grind to get cash for the next cool...

Huge shame they scrapped their expansion/DLC for it and only developed new things for Online. The Ballad of Gay Tony was an incredible expansion for the previous game
I definitly won't be getting gta6.
Very fair! Just remember that GTA 5 was kind of groundbreaking back when it released. I might be setting myself up for disappointment to expect the same of the sixth though, but the leaks do look really good.
I'm torn. GTA5 was one of the last games I was super hyped for. I got it at release and played through the story. It was a lot of fun.. I think I enjoyed 4 more.. You mentioned Ballad of Gay Tony,...
I'm torn. GTA5 was one of the last games I was super hyped for. I got it at release and played through the story. It was a lot of fun.. I think I enjoyed 4 more.. You mentioned Ballad of Gay Tony, and I think that might be the single greatest piece of DLC ever made.
I played a bit of GTA online but like you and everyone else has said, the grind is too predatory. It's funny, because in the single player you get to a point where money doesn't matter. You have essentially infinite cash, but I never felt like I earned enough online to do what I wanted. I had fun just screwing around doing races and missions with friends, but there was no desire to grind out anything on my own.
I'm cautiously optimistic for GTA6. I don't buy any games day one anymore, simply because you can't trust any game company. Even the darlings like CDPR can and will release games like CP2077 (Which I did purchase and play two years later, and enjoyed quite a bit.)
But I'll wait and see, and if it's well received I will try it out.
Ballad of Gay Tony was a fantastic bit of storytelling as well. The actual gameplay and new weapons it added were damn fun. Oh totally. I know what I'm getting myself in for with gta these days. I...

GTA5 online when it first launched was so much fun, but the loading screens absolute killed it for me, and it doesn't seem like they ever tried to make an effort to fix it. You'd sit in lobbies waiting for people join for 5-10 minutes, then 2-3 minutes of loading, then people would leave in the middle of loading and you'd be back at the lobby or plopped right back at your home base. When you actually got into a game finally, some of the game modes were great but it wasn't worth waiting 15+ minutes for each time. That combined with the microtransations and hacking killed it for me. I don't really understand the appeal or how they've made a fortune through GTA online.
I only tried GTAO when it first launched and it was such a goddamn mess I don't think I ever got halfway through anyone without it crashing, and that was if I was lucky enough to even be able to...

Had zero desire to ever try it again. But yes I hate that all the good stuff was reserved for online only when I went back 5+ years later for another play through.
There are rumors that GTA VI will have a price tag of over a hundred dollars which may actually keep me from playing it - I am otherwise pretty excited for it. The price tag is not too surprising...

I would say that is a surprising price tag, assuming that's for the standard edition of the game. AAA games have only recently started selling for $70.

There aren't many examples of it but the Formula 1 game is priced at 90 euros. And what I meant that it wouldn't be surprising that it's Rockstar that does it!

GTA online is such a greedy way to force multiplayer. They gimped single player updates to force you to play in the microtransaction hellscape that's riddled with hackers and griefers. Also everything in the game costs so much money that if you aren't cheating it takes hours to earn enough for a single car.

Nowadays it's not bad at all, it's very easy to grind for everything you could ever want. But from what I've seen the first few years were pretty bad, there weren't many ways to earn money and they kept nerfing the popular methods. Over the years prices have increased by quite lot, but grinding methods have become both faster, more fun and soloable

It's crazy how much this game, and especially its online mode, was the harbinger for where the games industry was going. The genius of it is that they designed a game world that really kind of let you do anything, and they built an online component that set up a shared metaverse sort of place before that was a thing.
Subsequent games, like Fortnite and Minecraft basically went down this direction. But for my money the way GTA5 did it, with a persistent online world where you could not just collect things, but functionally play all sorts of different kinds of games is the really clutch thing here. The engine is good enough to where you can seamlessly go from a passable car racing game, to a passable flight racing game, to a team based tactical shooter, to an arena shooter. You can do all this and more with the same basic engine and control scheme. On top of that, you can also do the sorta slice-of-life gameplay MMORPG gamers like. You can have an in-game business flipping houses!
Yeah there are technical limitations making all that stuff work, especially a decade ago. But the general promise of a shared open world game, as in a place where you can kind of just do whatever you want, hasn't been exceeded by anything since IMO.

It's unfortunate that once Rockstar realized how big a golden goose they had on their hands with GTAO, singleplayer content completely went out the window. No further singleplayer content like they made for past games. Online is fun if you enjoy doing the same, repetitive tasks to make enough chump change to be able to do more repetitive tasks to make slightly more chump change, all while being hassled by hackers and people not as interested in the grind as they are in harassing other players.
Outside of the discussion about GTAO, what a game the singleplayer still is. While it ranks behind GTA IV in my personal list, the game and the world are so compelling. I really wish we had gotten...

It's quite hard to believe it, but yes - yesterday marked 10 years since GTA 5 first released on PS3 and Xbox 360.
It's undoubtedly become a milestone of recent gaming history, driven by an impressive figure of over 160m lifetime sales, critical reception, and endless controversies from developer Rockstar Games and its parent company Take-Two. The popular multiplayer mode, GTA Online, continues to stand the test of time as Rockstar continually adds new updates and content.
As Rockstar works on GTA 6 and Take-Two suggests it might be released as early as next year, now feels like an appropriate moment to take stock of the achievements, missteps, and musings that surround GTA 5.

It is also the sole reason I din't buy RDR2. If the game can't be launched offline I can't play it on Steam Deck. Period. I know RDR2 can as of now, but give the GTA example, who knows when it will change to always-online? We vote with our wallets, don't we? I know they won't miss my few bucks and I won't miss their game (as I have dozens of others to play).

Which store is that on?
SteamDB shows the base edition at 70 euros for the base price, with 90 for the "champions edition" with the extra bits.
Ah, my bad, I can see that! I suppose maybe it showed me the special edition by default

Not even interested in what 6 will be like
