The Definitive edition pays real homage in my eyes. Is is well deserved and very good remake. Not perfect, but very good. I played on "classic" difficulty as there is no other option for me and I have really enjoyed the game. The ending speech is quite different from original, but I like it. I like original one more, though.

And yes, there may probably beother games on he list, but what do I have to say about it... Everyone has different taste.

    EDIT: spelling...

There is a reason why I framed the headline in terms of the author's opinion lol. I figured it would generate good discussion

The original System Shock release in 1994 and original RE2 in 1998. So I don't see the Dead Space Remake being that crazy of a choice in that regard.

It is when you consider how much changed between those games and their respective remakes, and how little changed between the original Dead Space and the new one. Yeah, there's some QoL stuff, but it's essentially still the exact same game, with the same locations and same...everything. There's very little that wasn't in the original game (I did appreciate that they re-did a few of the boss fights and setpieces like the ADS system section, but that's not much in total). RE2make actually remade the game.

The Dead Space remake changes a lot more than that. It's actually one of the more artful and noteworthy remakes we have, in terms of significant yet subtle updates that preserve the feel of the original game without changing core aspects too much, the opposite approach of the RE remakes. If anything from this list is just a simple graphical facelift and some QoL additions, it's the TLOU remake. And maybe Yakuza Kiwami and Nier Replicant too, depending on how fuzzy QoL additions gets.

Dead Space had to totally redo all the dialogue scenes now that Isaac can speak, adjusting and changing lines to improve the side characters and Isaac more while updating the game to fit with the sequel's plot. This was pretty important because the most major side character in the original was just so badly done, they ruined their own plot twist. And they changed the level design of the entire game to make the ship one universally traversable piece instead of the level-based design of the original, which is a huge change. They also totally remixed where all the jump scares are to keep the experience fresh even for players of the original, and totally revamped the zero-G moments to use the second game's free-form movement instead of the original's on-rails movement.

EDIT: clarified the RE remakes comparison. I realized I had it worded in a way that said the DS remake was like the RE remakes when I meant the other approach to remakes was the RE remakes concept.

I wholeheartly disagree with the statement that "little changed" between Dead Space and the Remake. Change just for the sake of doing something different is not always a good approach (why would they change the location from the Ishimura? Did you expect RE2 Remake to change the setting from Raccoon City?) and the Dead Space Remake is clearly built with the intent of keeping the spirit and the good things about the original intact, while greatly updating / improving the game in almost every way possible.

Yeah, in my book a 2008 release is still relatively modern. Slap new coat of paint (higher rez models and textures, maybe some bells and whistles like raytracing) on it and polish a few of the rough edges up a bit and you’ve got something pretty close to a 2023 new release.

With a few minor exceptions, it's basically the same game. It's more of a remaster than a remake.

Is Dead Space likely to go on sale for lower than $36 later this year? I'm in the mood for survival horror after playing through Signalis twice but I wouldn't mind saving a few bucks...

I bummed some of the OG quotes were left out even though the opportunities for the cheese was still there. But it’s unacceptable that the game doesn’t say “RESIDENT EVIL…..FOOOOOOOOOooooouuur” when booted up.

Yeah they're a pretty solid little news aggregator these days. There isn't much of a community to speak of, and the posts are curated by editors, but they share a dozen or so stories a day. It's a good way to kill a few minutes here and there throughout the day.

But I do also find it funny that I'm looking at a Digg post on a site I left reddit for, which I had left Digg for a decade ago.
