100 hours? Amateur! I probably have something like 6000 hours played in Everquest... although I did start playing back when it originally came out. ;) And I only have about 300-ish hours played since Daybreak took over. But if you haven't played it, so lack the nostalgia factor, I definitely wouldn't recommend starting to play it now... especially since the only way to raid effectively anymore is to multi-box, or at least join a guild with a bunch of people who multi-box.

Speaking of which, my Everquest guild is essentially still operating (though only a few people still play EQ anymore), and everyone still regularly plays games together (MMOs and otherwise) over 20 years later. We migrated from EQ, to DAoC, to WoW, to SW:ToR, occasionally splintering off into smaller groups for a bit to play other MMOS (Lineage, Rift, Vanguard, etc), but most recently we reunited to play Lost Ark together for a while, until that fizzled out. Over the years we have also picked up new members along the way, as you do.

And every year since nearly the beginning, a fair number of us (usually 10-15) meet up for "RCon", with people flying in from all over the US and Canada to attend. We nerd out for a week together at a friend's cottage, playing tabletop, M:TG draft, console and PC LAN games together, drinking copious amounts of alcohol, smoking a ton of weed, and most recently even hosting friendly competitions, complete with a trophy and medals. :)

So yeah, Everquest has a special place in my heart, even though it's an ancient, frustrating, time consuming, janky as hell game. :P

We were the 'Regression' guild on Innoruuk... although I just had to ask a guildee since I genuinely couldn't remember which EQ server we were originally on. I kept thinking it was Kel'Thuzad but I realize now that was our WoW server. The names all kinda blend together after so many years and so many different MMOs. :P

I played on veeshan too, I was just a kid sharing an account with my older brother. I met an actual girl my age playing and I'd race home from school to get on the computer before my brother could to hang out with her on msn. I wish I had access to the old Hotmail account we used because her mom walked me through how to upload and attach a picture to an email. Looking back I think it was to determine I wasn't some old creep, after that we'd voice chat and talk about having an in-game wedding.

Fellow Luclinite here. Spent my time in KoL, IB, and LoS until WoW launched, and then it was Exiled. The discord is still around and still lively, but it takes a rare and special game experience to pull them all together for another chapter. Hardcore raiding in that game was something else, I wonder if it will ever be replicated again.

Yeah, it's pretty neat having made a bunch of lifelong friends through a videogame, and us still being in regular contact all these years later. :)

Going to date myself a little bit here, but I played Everquest as a kid back when it was new. What was amazing was going back to it years later and really seeing how much my child brain filled in the world with my own imagination. I mean, the UI and mechanics are absolutely insane by modern standards, not to mention the graphics lol, how I not only tolerated that but thrived in the game as a kid is still a bit of a puzzle.

Legendary game for those of us who were there to play it at the beginning for sure though. My favorite area was the wood elf city, and I have fond memories of me an some random exploring the north and being in awe of the giant ruined statues that you can discover. Hooked me on MMOs and got me dreaming about the future of games.

Mine too. I was the the first Ogre character on our server to grind out enough rep to hang out in Kelethin without the guards and other wood elf NPCs trying to kill me. It was super fun walking around the wooden platforms and blowing other players' minds when they saw me. The damn bankers would still aggro me though, so I had to avoid going too close to the bank. :P

I had a friend who was new to the game borrow my full set of bronze armor and my fungi tunic and the idiot jumped off the boat to OT way too early, then while trying to swim the rest of the way his internet disconnected so he ended up dying. He didn't tell me about it right away, and by the time he did it was too late to summon his corpse, so my gear was lost. That's the angriest I think I've ever been at someone in any game (and in RL too, since he was a RL friend from school)... and that's saying a lot, since I once had a rare mob ganked from me after 12+ hours of camping the spawn. :(

God, Everquest was an unforgiving bastard of a game. Why did we torture ourselves playing it? :P

It was incredible for the time and a great foundation, but just a bit crap these days because we know better now.

I don't know if it was just that EQ was my first, but nothing since has scratched the itch like EQ did... I think back to the Matrix w/Agent Smith talking about how they tried making the matrix super nice and friendly and humans couldn't handle it. My experiences with MMO's would tend to support that. EQ was so unforgiving and had such steep learning curves. Vanilla WoW was kinda ok, but by ?Pandaria? it felt more like a ride in an amusement park than an immersive world. If Microsoft hadn't screwed Vanguard's release I think it might have had a chance to be a true successor to EQ. The first few levels of Conan were pretty good too.

I started back up on the project1999 community server about 2 years ago. It's a hoot. There are 2 servers currently green/blue. The servers will never progress past Velious - general sentiment amongst the p99'ers is that things started to go south w/Luclin and the spires/bazaar.

Blue is the OG and has had all Velious content for years. Green just finished the progression ?last? year. Speculation is that Green and Blue will combine and a new Green server will spawn, but it's just speculation.

It's crazy how much is the same and how much is different. Sitting in the EC tunnel is like sitting in the grocery store parking lot in Redwood City circa 2000. Ferraris and Lamborghinis everywhere. Guilds routinely raid Veeshan's Peak and Plane of Mischief which were just fables/fairy tales on the server I played on 20+ years ago in retail.

The community is super friendly and supportive and while there are some very sweaty guilds, most of us are just chillin' and reliving the glory years.

Things have slowed down a ton on the blue server in the last year or so, and right now a bunch of people are over on a new server called QUARM that's just started and will progress to PoP and then stop.

    Oh and multi-boxing is a ban'able offense. =D

There are hundreds of videos just for p99 on youtube (which is where I'd recommend starting if you do decide to give it go). Personally, I'd suggest starting with a druid. The game designers couldn't implement easy/medium/hard mode in the game itself, but they definitely made life a LOT easier for certain classes, chief amongst them druids. Druids are not very gear dependent (some classes are literally unplayable until they get some decent gear), and they gradually gain the ability to magically transport themselves and others all over the map which is a great way to earn some money and buy better gear for that class you really want to play...

I never played the original EQ, but played EQ2 heavily about 10-12 years ago. While it certainly had a number of QoL improvements, it certainly had its own annoying gameplay quirks. Yet, I loved that game dearly for what it offered and the uniquess it had with factions and player housing. Still to this day, exploring Maj'Dul by rooftop to avoid starting a fight in contested territory in order to get to my desert themed player house is one of my favorite gaming memories! Or visiting an RPG Guild hosted event that was ran in a player's house and entailed a fair and live play performances! I never got that type of experience or thrill of sorts in any other MMO.

Meeting "elders" who played EQ and heard about my adventures in 2 always served as a reminder of how far the game came even at that time. At times they were shocked I was playing 2 during a time that WoW was all the rage, but it was the first MMO I tried and the one I stayed with for a moment. I got to witness the beginning of its end when free to play was announced and the predictions posted in player forums that became reality now that Daybreak owns the game. I tried returning to the game some years ago when the nostalgia kicked in, but much like Josh's experience here with the original, the "pay money" gimmick gets to be to much.
