Not my article, and I didn't want to editorialise the title. A worthy in-browser time sink if ever there was one though! Check it out here. I'm not very good at it yet, but my morning coffee is...

Update: I have lost about 3 hours to this game so far. Highly addictive, and very good at the whole "just one more try" thing

I like it, but to me it's a game I win once or twice and after that I see no point in playing any more. Here's another excellent relatively fresh game on itch that can be played in your browser...

Here's another excellent relatively fresh game on itch that can be played in your browser and has slightly more crack-like qualities: Solitomb

Thanks, I'll give it a look! Although I think I quite like the "one and done" nature of Dragonsweeper personally. It's been a nice idle curiosity for a few hours of my work day.

The comment he said made the game click for him was via jedicus on MetaFilter (where I learned about the game); the "exploration budget" he mentions is just one part of a helpful 4-part strategy.

Wish it had randomness in the enemy types per number and how they behaved, it feels like it's a mechanic or two away from being really interesting to replay. Still really fun, though.

I feel like the lack of randomness was part of what made it possible for there to be a learning curve to it. When you see the question marks, you know where and how strong the source is. When you see purple slimes, you know the pattern and where the wizard is. It's true that not all enemies have a trick to them, but imo if the sprites and numbers were randomly assigned it would take away from the experience.

I'm not saying to randomize the slime numbers or patterns, or another example that the gazers shouldn't always be a 2-square grid away. I'm saying that, within the numbers 5 or 8, there should be a bit more variety to enemies that appear such that each board doesn't play out mostly the same every game.

The learning curve is nice, but it ends very quickly.

Interesting little game. Once it clicked that the top priority is using up every single heart before healing or levelling up, it went pretty fast. You've got to keep enough options open and know what you have in order to strip you down to zero hearts over and over, and once you can manage that it's more of a process than a game. I believe there's setups it's impossible to win, which will probably maintain interest longer than something that's totally solved.

Oof. Took a good number of attempts, but I finally hit 365/365. A very nice experience.

I used to play mamono sweeper a lot, it's really great for practicing doing basic arithmetic quickly and accurately

Very cool, was able to beat it after 20 tries or so. Score 244!
