Looks like a lot of solid scores, definitely still some performance things on PC but I'm pretty hyped! I loved World and Rise and I've already taken Friday off for this game

Huh, those specs are extremely close to my own (3070, 5600x, 32gb RAM) and I was getting maybe an average of 50fps in the beta so that's good to hear. I was worried I was going to have to drop graphics to low or resolution to 1080p to get consistently over 60fps, but you can really start to notice the drop in quality at that point.

I'm avoiding the monster hunter subreddits and youtube like the plague after having a couple of big reveals spoiled, so thank you for keeping your comment brief. Glad to hear that it's scoring well and that at least some of the performance jank has been improved. Hopefully they're able to clean it up even more with post-release updates like they did for World. Can't wait until Friday!

(Sadly with the pretty terrible performance and increased pricing none of my friends will be getting it on release :( )

I'm cautiously optimistic, but I'll wait and see how it develops over the next year or two. I've loved the franchise for over a decade now, but the recent streamlining of the games doesn't work for me. The IGN review's main complaint was its difficulty, which is exactly what I feared.

Rise is the first time I ever bounced off one of them, despite my best efforts. All the quality of life features, less commitment on actions taken, and wirebug abilities have sucked out a lot of the challenge I enjoyed out of the games :(

I played world but the main thing that stopped me, as silly as it sounds, was not being able to skip stupid long cutscenes and to some extent the boss fights.

I'm already "eh" on the RPG mechanics of some of these games, as "yeah your skills are great, but screw you you're going to deal no damage and like it until you get better weaponry" is just an auto fail in my eyes.

MH world, at the minimum skirted around this a bit being pretty chill on grinding and letting you try different weapons without too much hassle, but eventually it becomes the MMORPG "weekly homework sheet" vibe and I'm out.

I hear that Rise discovered we don't all want to watch badly scripted cutscenes when we've only got so much free time, so that's a plus, and the general gameplay of world looks like it should be fun? I think my other big complaint is how uh....formulaic the fighting can feel? Here's your combo, do it, repeat. Getting very good with some weapons is all about knowing when to use certain moves to get the most out of your kit, but I tried gunlance and it's basically "2/3rds of your kit will be weaker/useless depending on how you built/what you're using".

I hear they've fixed that too, so i'm hopeful I can finally get into one of these.

That's not a discovery, it's a return to old MH. In the very old days, MH didn't even have a story. Later, it was implemented like it was in Rise; it essentially runs parallel to the pure monster-killing co op mode.

World was essentially an experiment to see if having a more traditional game structure, being on more common Western platforms like PC and PS5, and having more realistic graphics would be able to attract the Western market. Having the mandatory campaign was part of that, since it's basically a mandatory tutorial for the combat. It is otherwise pretty common to bounce off of MH because the combat feels like sluggish ass if you're not use to it.

Honestly, it's the same for me. It sucks because the world building and the story are both amazing. I love all the crafting mechanics, the lore, the weapons, the armor, the chase, everything is so great... but the combat just sucks. I hate being stuck inside long animations and basically deal close to zero damage for very long period of times. I tried different weapons, but the problem was still the same. I kinda feel like if the animations were shorter and fights were a little shorter, it would be one of my favourite games (as is the case for so many people), but the fighting aspect is just a dealbreaker for me.

I really think Rise beat world in terms of speed and arcadiness. Everything got extra mobility options both in and out of combat, and the wirebug recovery mechanic means that taking a hit costs you less time as well. Several weapons got new counterattacks as well IIRC, although I only used LBG and Lance so I don't know the specifics. Coming from World and GU, Rise did not feel right for a long time, and I never really did adapt to the wirebug moves.

That wouldn’t change the length of the fights, though, which are admittedly often lengthy (albeit shorter if you have a group).

I just hate when you do land the big hit just perfectly, and you get nothing because the enemy is a damage sponge as the late game is built around build optimization, not combat execution, which is what drives me off.

On the committal thing, have you tried the daggers or Sword and Shield? They're muuuuuuch less commitment based.

Now that it's been out a couple of days, I thought I'd check back in on this thread. I've been having a blast! The new monsters are an absolute delight and I've really enjoyed the reworked fights of returning monsters. And those armor designs! I love just running around watching endemic life (although witnessing a giant venus flytrap eat a dapperwing was slightly tramatic). I am lucky that the game runs fine on my pc. It's disappointing that it released in such a wonky state, but I guess that's just the frustrating reality of AAA games these days. The gameplay was enough to overcome any detrimental visual jank for me but I completely understand why people would avoid the game until it's fixed.

And for anyone who's made it to the end of the low rank story:

What about that boss fight! That thing was giving me biblically accurate angel vibes

I've completed LR Story, and a few of the unlock quests in HR. I love the flow of these hunts. Been playing every game since 3, I'd say this is the best hunting yet.

It's less anime than Rise (which I do love by the way) and more fluid than World, and no stupid claw.

Best story in a Monster Hunter game.

There are a few rough edges. Performance and visuals are very poor. I'd like a bit more for my £70 than PS3 level textures, shimmering trees and vaseline screens (performance mode, PS5).

Currently 22 hours on the play time since launch. I expect quite a bit more.

Things I'm not using that I thought I would? Taking 2 weapons to the field. Perhaps I'm just a grizzled old hunter, but nah. Not for me. I can see why they made the weapon skills and decos work they way they did though, because otherwise it'd be completely impossible.

Not keen on the loss of the canteen, that was an iconic part of MH which has gone.

While you can catch multiple fish at once with the net, the net scares off all the other fish in the vicinity, and the fish caught using the net will not count towards quest completion.

Some fish are easier and quicker to farm using the net while others may be quicker if you use the rod.
There may also be certain types of fish you can only get using the rod, but don't quote me on it.

I think due to the fact that you can now capture flash flies (don't tell me you could already do them), and use that slingshot line thing to pick up 'erbs , I just tried the net in the water.

I’m not really enjoying this one as much as I hoped I would. I loved Tri on the Wii, loved World (for the most part) on my PC, didn’t play Rise, and…

This one just feels weird and different. It’s more streamlined in some ways but slower and clunkier in others. Some random thoughts:

    • I strongly dislike the auto-navigation when mounted. I’m about 10 hours in and I know absolutely nothing about the maps, because i don’t need to. Exploring and learning your way around was a big part of the fun of this series, IMO. Traveling just feels like a really long load screen now, it’s not engaging gameplay.
    • I can’t get invested in the story. The action scenes are really cool and incredibly well animated, but there’s an awful lot of sitting on your mount twiddling your thumbs while people talk. Worst part is when you try to grab materials to fill the time and then the camera yoinks your perspective away. I’ve started skipping everything I can. (I was not a fan of the story in World either, but I don’t remember there being this much of it.)
    • I do like how the combat feels, for the most part. I’m not sure about wounds and the aiming system yet though. I’ve found myself manually aiming like 80% of the time now, which makes the game feel a lot different and I’m not sure I’d want this to be a permanent feature for the series going forward.
    • The image quality is abysmal on my PC (1080p, 5800X3D and RTX 3080). Even when I turn off DLSS it looks blurry and muddy on high settings. Framerate is all over the place too. Games simply should not be shipped in this state.
    • Little things like having to wait for the smithy to slowly walk back to her spot before you can talk to her after a story quest is irritating.
    • Now I have to go inside my tent to clean up and restock my pouch. More screens and more clicks than before. Really wish there was an extra item box outside your tent.
    • I miss the canteen.
    • The seikret controls feel super clunky to me. I’m playing with KBM controls so maybe that’s part of it, but I really don’t like how he autoruns like a car that I have to brake to stop.

I started playing Rise to compare over the weekend, and that game absolutely hooked me. Feels like the good ole days of Tri, but with a bit more flash and QOL features. It also runs like a dream on both my PC and my steam deck.

I’ll keep playing Wilds, I’m usually having fun when I’m actually fighting monsters and I wanna give it a fair shot all the way through. But I don’t like a lot of the changes they’ve made and the poor optimization is really frustrating.

I’m glad most people seem to be having fun though. It’s cool seeing the series grow in popularity.

I strongly suspect we'll get a hub area with static stations at some point. I don't much care for having multiple bases with everyone in different places. I can't cope at my age, lol. It was bad enough having what was it, 4 in World? Rise's 3 was fine.

I did really like the story though, got a bit emotional at the end. It's the best story in an MH game by far. But if I might be so bold as to say that to enjoy it, you had to read it and watch it , otherwise it'll be , huh? what?

I also miss the canteen, BUT, I cooked a meal right under a monsters nose to get my health back up whilst my palico pelted it. That is pretty badass, lol. I restrict myself to ration only meals though, because using consumables to cook with seems bad.

Initially I was a bit grumpy about how item sets worked, but then I realised, all the MH games that have had item and equipment sets have had strange menu and button chains to activate them, then shrugged and moved on.

Finding the combat very good in Wilds. Less flashy than Rise (which I also love) , but more precise and fluid than World. Weapon designs are much improved over World

There's lots to dislike about the image quality and performance though. I'm playing on base PS5 because my PC won't provide a good experience, and in framerate mode, it still looks like shimmery soup way too much of the time.

I resigned myself to playing it on base PS5 though, that's the best I could do with the facilities I have. When the inevitable G Rank is available, I'll take stock of what's available hardware wise and make a decision then, but it won't be current gen base PS5.

The Pro is looking compelling right now in lots of games - managing to power through poorly optimised titles, but I also remember what happened with the 4 Pro, in that developers again tried to push too hard, and things got clunky. When the 4 Pro was allowed just to fix up standard PS4 games (e.g. World) it was at its best IMO.

Thanks for that seikret controls guide, I really should have looked for that sooner. It definitely helps, though it still feels a lot clunkier than the palamute to me (and annoyingly it still forces me to automove during the beginning of story quests, which is extra frustrating when it puts mining outcrops along the way...)

I've heard a lot of positive impressions of the story, and my friend really enjoyed it too. I gave it about 6-7 hours before I gave up and started skipping everything. I usually love a good story in a game, but it needs to hook me early and hold my interest or I'm not going to continue giving it my time -- and unfortunately I just haven't been able to connect with any of these characters.

So, I'm just trying to push through to get to the meat of the game now. My buddy keeps assuring me it starts feeling more like classic monster hunter once the credits roll.

Update: Can confirm, I’m having a lot more fun now that the hand-holding is over. Hunting, exploring, and gathering at my own pace is a blast, and I’m really loving this iteration of the SnS.

I also figured out some tricks to make the game look and feel better on my rig. My RTX 3080 is somehow too old for Nvidia’s frame generation feature, but I found out I can use AMD’s version of it if I switch to FSR.

So I did that and changed the FSR mode to antialiasing with sharpness cranked all the way up, and the image quality massively improved. It’s no longer a fuzzy, artifact-riddled mess.

Frame generation doubles the apparent framerate, but the drawback is that it adds input latency. It’s most noticeable to me in menus, but not as much during gameplay, so I can live with it for now.

My review after playing it over the weekend:

BLUF: It's real damn good. Might become my favorite monhun game if I like the late game play and challenge.

I have not had any major optimization issues. I feel for those who have them but if it works, then it's works really well. I've only seen maybe a tiny bit of framerate stuttering and graphical glitches. I think most of this comes back to Denuvo, which is frustrating that they use. There likely will be "workarounds" for it in the future.

The story is great. In particular, the main characters from the guild all feel like they were hand chosen experts in the field specifically for this expedition. Notably your hunter as well. I felt this might have been the case and made an older, more experienced hunter and glad I did. Narratively this works great for the scenes where shit hits the fan and the PC hunter immediately takes control of the situation, but (usually) not without consulting Alma for authorization to hunt first. It really helps sell the "Badass" feel better than World and Rise.

Segue from there in to the gameplay and God damn does this gameplay make you feel badass. The combat is smooth. The hit boxes are finely tuned to player comfort but still retaining the challenge. For once I haven't heard nary a peep about janky hit boxes and it's paying dividends in the fun department.

The second weapons are great too, it allows for me to shore up weaknesses in my play style. I chose Dual Blades as my primary for status effects and elemental attacks this time, but sometimes being that close to a monster really is not ideal. So instead I have a Switch Axe secondary, just generically strong, so I can dodge and strike from a range that won't have a monster constantly kicking me over.

The game isn't perfect though, the default settings are a mess and I do miss the Cat Canteen. The multiplayer system also isn't intuitively understandable to everyone. And could have been done better. (I would have loved a small, permanent environment link lobby that also can post quests, for example.) After playing for a while I think I understand the reasons for their choices, but i do wonder if they could have been done better.

These gripes are small though, and I think that with a bit of polishing this will be easily the best Mon Hun game.

    EDIT: Cleaning up some language
