Did anyone play Chex Quest?
I saw that @Deimos had made a post about the history of Chex Quest about this game in 2019, and since it has been over 6 years since then, and I felt the urge to play it again, I figured I'd see if anyone else had any memories of this game.
Note: The video that was included in the original link appears to have been taken down, I found a re-upload here: https://youtu.be/pxu1cq_vRUw
My dad brought a copy of this home with him one day from work that he got from a coworker whose kids enjoyed it. My brother and I played it a solid amount and it was an awesome game, and also my first exposure to a game that ran in the Doom engine. I also had a distinct memory of seeing the game play of the original Doom for the first time and thinking "hey that looks like Chex Quest!".
Chex Quest is a shareware title so you're able to download the files and play the game for free. I can't remember where I got them, but I have the first three Chex Quest games as .wad files that I was playing with Chocolate Doom. There are also fan made .wad files in the Chex Quest style that I've yet to play, but maybe one day! I even remember there being a Doom randomizer that included the ability to generate random Chex Quest levels, but I can't seem to find it while doing some quick searching online.
Edit: I found the random level generator a few minutes after posting this: https://github.com/obsidian-level-maker/Obsidian
They also released a Chex Quest HD on Steam that I remember got me to go back and play the original game 5 years ago.
I’m (very) slowly working my way through a lot of the higher-profile and/or “culturally relevant” (relatively speaking) DOOM WADs, so Chex Quest came across my radar last year. It’s a fun little trip! I didn’t finish all of the episodes but I enjoyed it for what it was. I know
I read a long blurb the creator put out into the world, but can’t seem to find it now - it might have been in the README of episode 3? I enjoyed the historical background at any rate, so if I find it I’ll have to share it out.
Apologies if it mentions the source of this note in the video you linked; I’m unable to watch it at the moment.
I mentioned this in my reply to @knocklessmonster earlier, but I'd like to make a post sometime soon regarding what users favorite wads, mods, and source ports are. I'd love to dive into more Doom related content, and with so much of it being free to play it really fits in to my $0 gaming budget I have these days.
I keep a USB with a copy of Chocolate Doom and a handful of Doom wads including Chex Quest in case I ever have the time to play them.
They didn't cover any notes in the video, it was mainly a selection of clips from interviews with the team who created the original Chex Quest which was awesome to watch again after all these years.
I'll certainly keep an eye out for that post about favorite WADs/mods/source ports and will chime in :) It's one of the best and easiest ways to burn literal thousands of hours and still fit your budget!
I was able to find that blurb, by the way - it was indeed in the README for the separately-released Episode 3 WAD.
Cool little piece of history!
Thanks for sharing that, that was an interesting read!
I had never played Ultimate Chex Quest, or Chex Quest 3, time get Zorching when I can find an evening to hang out at my computer and play games.
I got it for free in a cereal box when I was a kid. Back in the day a long long time ago the prizes that came in cereal boxes were actually awesome.
I feel like I grew up right at the tail end of cereal boxes giving cool things. When I was an adult and saw that there was a QR code on the cereal box you could scan to play a game, it made me feel so old, and also question why would kids need to do that instead of just printing something fun and engaging on the box.
Same! This was my first real game I played start to finish along with Super Mario World. The level design with lots of secret areas blew my mind at the time! I haven’t played in forever but I can picture a few of my favorite areas clear as day. It definitely influenced the types of games I enjoy although ironically I never got into Doom.
Chex Quest HD was pretty garbage. I got it, bought a few bags of chex mix but didn't enjoy it enough to worry too much about it after.
I got into Doom in like 2008, then everything around it (Heretic/Hexen, Chex Quest, etc), and think it's a really good game considering what it is. It's definitely creative. It also came from an era where companies made fully-fledged games simply for marketing (shout outs to Cap'n Crunch's Crunchling Adventure)
I must've missed that post because I sure as hell would've done a driveby on it.
I like the idea of non-violent shooters as a concept and that's sorta what ChexQuest was. Adventures of Square was a fun one I found as well.
Glad to hear I didn't miss anything with the Chex Quest HD as I never got around to playing it!
I started playing Doom as an Adult ~5 years ago and went back to revisit Doom 1 & 2 which were fantastic! I don't think I finished Final Doom at the time as my friends got me into Escape from Tarkov. I think I'll make a post asking other Tilders what their favorite Doom wads sometime soon.
I'd love to dive more into Doom and play great wads and mods for it, but as with all my gaming it will happen one day, or maybe sooner if there is a good way to play Doom wads on my Android phone (there probably is I just haven't looked into it yet).
Zorch 'em!
The game is cool, but I still have a disc lying around in case I need to cash in on my FIFTY FREE HOURS OF AMERICA ON-LINE THREE POINT ZERO. I hear the internet is getting spicy and I need the best Perks a browser can give me.....
I'm pretty sure I still have my Chex Quest disc somewhere in my parent's house. They've talked about moving, but if they don't I think the next time I make it back to the states I'm going to try and do some treasure hunting and set aside a box of random stuff like that I'd want to keep.
Those America On Line discs sure had a variety of uses besides granting Internet access! I saw so many of them used for random things growing up.
What the ..
I first played Doom around 1994/95 when I was ten or eleven and from it, developed a voracious appetite for FPS games. When Chex Quest arrived in cereal boxes in 1996, I was 12 and had already played stuff like Duke Nukem 3d, Strife, Quake, Descent, etc, etc and Chex Quest was pretty kiddy by comparison.
All that said, I had to have it, as it was an FPS after all. I don't remember a ton else, aside from really enjoying it and seeking out episode 2 when it released the next year. Haven't touched it since then, but I do recall thinking it was super cool we were able to get a proper FPS game for PCs in cereal boxes at the time.
Also, I do prefer Chocolate Doom for all my Doom wads. It's just unfortunate that most mods and TCs these days release for GZDoom, since Chocolate is what feels authentic to me. I'll still play plenty of GZDoom stuff (check out the Ashes 2063 series by the way), but enjoyed playing through the original games via Chocolate on my PS Vita.
I've heard of Ashes 2063, and it's been on my list to try out. I've never gotten into Doom mods. When I found Chocolate Doom, it did everything I wanted: played Doom how I remembered playing it, though I'm someone who uses the mouse instead of pure keyboard controls
I saw there was Delta Touch for playing Doom on Android and am I may get it one day, but even a small purchase like that is something I sit on for a long while these days. The $3 USD is currently 12.70 RM which isn't huge, but that's a meal for my kids to split eating out at a food court over here and I already have other games/things to do on my phone.
