I’m stuck on A18 with two classes (ironclad and silent), and my other two are in the A13 / A14 range!

High ascension spoilers I've thrown many runs on lower ascensions at The Heart _already_. It usually takes me nearly the amount of time to get through A20 as it takes to get through like A5-A19 just because of the double boss. Turn that into basically quadruple boss with the Spire Shield/Spear and The Heart and feel like I'd lose it pretty quickly lol.

          My overall progression was:

          • Win A0 with each character
          • Get a heart kill with any character
          • Unlock A20 with each character (mostly Act 3 victories, being quite risk-averse)
          • Get A20 heart kill with each character

While it did save time for my goal to ignore Act 4, it was a big adjustment to take it on in A20 without much practice. I did eventually succeed. Silent is my worst character and took me months.

Ahhh heck I'm also still in the ascension 20 grind. So far I only have ironclad a20 done (with a heart kill too!), currently grinding silent at a18. Not much time left, huh?

I’ll be waiting until it’s fully cooked to try it out (and then some, probably), but I’m not too worried about it. There’s plenty to tide me over until then. I’m currently working my way through Monster Train anyway (the first one, not even the second!).

Also, it fair to say that this is going to be the Godot engine’s highest profile release so far? Pretty cool that an open source engine is getting such a big name.

I was thinking the same thing! It's awesome that Godot is starting to have bigger names like this attached to it.

Its wiki page has a section on Notable video games made with Godot. Brotato and BF6's Battlefield Portal map editor are the other standouts to me.

No idea! I just saw it in the trailer and think it's a great idea. I didn't even know there were co-op mods for StS1 until very recently.

Also meant to address waiting til it's fully cooked:

I almost always have the same mindset. Don't particularly like the idea of paying to beta test something, and also don't want to get attached to anything that will be cut or changed. But I think my excitement for this game in particular overrides it.

They've said it's going to be 1-2 years in the oven, and price will go up once it releases (both stated on the Steam page). Also factors for me, as I don't think I can wait that long!

I've seen some hearty recommendations of Monster Train here, alongside StS and Balatro which I really enjoy. I gave it a shot, but it unfortunately doesn't hook me. Do you have any thoughts about what you like about it?

Not the person you asked, but if you don't mind me giving me input re: Monster Train:

IMO, Slay the Spire is the better designed game, the cards and mechanics all seem so well put together and the decision lines are greased so well, truly a masterpiece. However, I think of the two I actually have more fun with Monster Train.

There are some standout differences, the pseudo-tower-defense aspect of placing units, the mix and match of the clans, etc. The main difference though, and how I usually describe it, is this: in StS, you are carefully building your synergies and choices, and if you do well there's the occasional bonkers run, but mostly you just do well and are strong. Monster Train, on the other hand, asks you to break the game over your knee as a matter of the usual gameplay loop. There are some absolutely filthy combos you can make with different units, spells, upgrade slots, and relics. On higher "ascensions" (covenants), I usually die at the first miniboss or two, or get online and crush mercilessly, with few in-between. It's a matter of taste either way, but I personally enjoy the high-power high-synergy gameplay of MT more. (Although again, I love StS as well).

As a note, Monster Train 2 is basically everything MT1 is, and much more. If you are just getting into the series, I'd really just suggest skipping to the second one. You really don't miss anything on the mechanics end worth missing, and you can read a summary of the story if that captivates you (although IMO MT story is fine and serviceable but not particularly compelling, in either narrative or world-building).

otoh, MT2 literally has everything MT1 included. So might as well skip 1. :) (I think both are fine. I like the graphics of 1 more, and I think it's a bit less of a hodgepodge)

I think you guys are saying the same thing haha However, I did buy the first one, so if I go back I will be playing that one. Unless I get 2 for free from Epic or something.

(Also, the existence of the MT1 clans in MT2 is kind of a spoiler, it's a dramatic reveal and I personally lost my mind when it happened, so I don't quite know how to handle telling people when recommending just starting with MT2 lol. Then again, if you didn't play MT1 you won't have the nostalgia to make said reveal exciting in the same way anyhow so)

I like that the game has several different clans that you get to mix and match. Each one has their own unique "spin" on things, so there's a lot of different variety in how you play and what you combine. I also like its more tower-defense-style setup. It scratches a similar itch to StS for me, but it's different enough that I don't feel like I'm just playing that again.

My brother let me know he's getting me a copy for Christmas/my birthday when it launches which is awesome news! I've been looking forward to this for a long while. I could afford to buy a copy if I wanted, but I try to keep my gaming budget to near 0 these days as I don't game enough to really justify the purchase of new games when I already have so many.

That all being said, I may buy a second copy for my wife and I to play coop together. STS is one of the few games that clicked for her and she plays on her own which has been fun to see her starting to climb the Ascensions. She'll occasionally ask me for advice/opinions on her runs. She likes to figure the game out herself and has been avoiding looking up tips/builds for the most part so I'll occasionally mention you can do X and see the gears start turning.

I'm excited for co-op with my friend who introduced me to STS. I have ~400 hours between my phone and Steam on this game. It fits perfectly as a dad mode game on mobile and I will probably buy STS 2 when it ports to Android as well.

spoilers? Defect is back, baby Co-op is confirmed in the blog post. edit: Blog post. Release date is March 5!
    spoilers?
    • Defect is back, baby

    • Multiple characters on screen in one fight. Not sure if this is hinting at online co-op play, or events that can add NPCs to your party? It didn't show health bars or armor on them.
Co-op is confirmed in the blog post.

I only put 500 hours into the first one. Took that long to get through Ascension 20 heart kills with every character.
