Favorite ASMR type?
The past few years I have been gradually starting to use ASMR to relax. I have had increasing bouts of anxiety and can't take too many kinds of medications since I am on blood thinners. So I rely on different relaxation methods to get me through.
I am fond of shoe and purse tapping but can't take mouth noises. Actually most tapping sounds seem to be the best fit for my ears. Maybe the occasional crinkling here and there. Perhaps even some whispered talking but I prefer just the sounds.
Some of these folks really go out in their productions. It's been amazing watching the evolution over the years.
I haven’t driven into much ASMR because from what I’ve seen a lot of them have these weird sexual undertones that make me uncomfortable.
It does bother me a lot that a bunch of sexual stuff has come into the community, it makes it look weird and gross to the uninitiated but it never used to be that way. A lot of my favourite old school ASMRtists stopped putting out content a while ago but there's still loads of great stuff out there. Here's a list (biased since I love talkers more than just isolated sound):
Talking
Talking and sounds
Just Sounds
Maybe you'll find something you like :)
I have been to some of these channels but I definitely see some new ones. Thank you!
I love the German guy (zeitgeist).
Honestly I have not come across anything that seemed sexual. But maybe that's just me LOL!
I am old and way past having any of those kinds of feelings.
I know - TMI.
Log out of YouTube, or open it in a private tab and just type asmr in the search bar. You won't have to scroll far. If at all.
Loads of "asmr" channels are more or less just advertising for OnlyFans, patreon, etc.
My internet presence is fairly simple these days but I have no doubt that weird sexual stuff is out there. I believe you!
I used to make ASMR before it got...weird. I guess it was always weird to a certain extent, but there's a lot of triggers I enjoyed and enjoyed doing. But the one I can never get enough of is plastic or paper crinkling. Also, the types of ASMR that get me the most are the unintentional kind.
Most current INTENTIONAL ASMR, is TAP FRENZY, meaning the majority of them tap like crazy like it's going out of style. It's the one ASMR trigger that I can no longer stand and as soon as I hear it, it's an instant turn off.
Also, if I hear music, it's an immediate turn off as well.
Yes some of the ASMR has been weird. I do not like the frenzied tapping at all. I like the slow deliberate kind. And I do enjoy the unintentional kind as well. And crinkling is great.
I think we mostly like "intentional unintentional ASMR" (or just unintentional ASMR), so things like slightly soft-spoken medical exams with remaining background static/noise or something like that
Another one is the really "cinematic" ASMR, which I don't really know how to describe other than incredibly high-effort sets which are kinda like the above, but more in a movie way. I think the best example that comes to mind is like everything Made In France ASMR
Yes! I have seen some incredibly cinematic productions!
I didn't know asmr got to that level lmao. nice find.
If you like Made In France, some other ASMR channels with a very high-quality production I can think off the top of my head are Atmosphere and Atlas ASMR.
The gentle mouth noises, the smacking and wetness, like someone eating an apple or tomato. It makes me instantly angry like nothing else. When I need to be calm in the rest of my life in order to make things happen for best effect, it's so satisfying to be able to absolutely loathe something incidental that doesn't cause any harm.
have you got any favourite ASMR artists that you like in this genre? I found Ting Ting to be a really good YouTuber in this regard if you haven’t listened to their content!
(Link is to her YouTube video of ASMR mouth sounds)
I like ASMRvilla for her wonderful tapping and Gentle Whispering for her slow whispering/hand gestures.
Gentle Whispering is just such a soothing individual.
I like JocieB for her production style but she does like the mouth sounds which I cannot tolerate for too long.
I will definitely try out your suggestion!
Yes. I can't tolerate those wet, lip smacking noises. They make me angry which defeats the whole purpose of ASMR LOL!
I guess everyone finds different sounds soothing.
I am just glad there is so much variety.
ASMR has always puzzled me somewhat. All of the videos that I've tried either annoy me, or I find just uninteresting. However, from the description of the feeling I think I do experience it.
If I close my eyes, focus on a spot in the middle of my back, and relax a certain way, I can induce a wave of tingles that radiate briefly out from that spot. It feels nice.
However the thing that really seems to work well is certain songs. Usually some kind of epic rock song. This can trigger the same sensation for minutes at a time, usually after the song crescendoes in some way. My go to song for this effect is currently the live performance at the Royal Albert Hall of "Wings Darker than Black" by Alter Bridge. It has a lovely early crescendo that keeps on crashing and then a soaring vocal note at the end, I love it.
Music is a powerful anxiolytic for me. Listening to some kinds of music is better than any relaxation technique or medication. It can be mood altering & emotionally evocative sometimes unpredictably.
Has anyone else become desensitized to ASMR? I used to get the tingles quite often, but now I can’t even remember the last time I did. I still listen to a lot of ASMR to help me go to sleep, but I sure miss the tingles.
You might find it helpful to have a bit of a detox from ASMR for a while, maybe a month or so! If it's hard going you can cheat a bit by listening to rain or ocean sounds or something but avoid all actual ASMR content as much as possible and then listen to something new without distractions rather than an old favourite when you're ready to jump back in.
I have a terrible habit of listening to it daily because I find it so relaxing and it does absolutely fry your ability to get tingles so I've had to do this a few times.
I never really got tingles. I just find that some of it is relaxing.
I guess our brains acclimatize to it, just like everything else. Nothing lasts forever and there's a first for everything. Same with riding a motorcycle, opening the throttle for the first time makes your gut feel funny and it's exciting and thrilling to feel that rush of speed come over you. Now I couldn't care less.
Time for a new hobby!
I can't read with out blow dryer that pans ears. My favorite armr tho that works everything is hard to find. A lady with long nails running them up nylon stockings.
That is a niche ASMR for sure. If I find one I will let you know.
Much appreciated.
I did not know I liked ASMR until I started watching Ogmios School of Zen Motoring on youtube.
So, that, I guess. It's incredibly relaxing.
I guess my brain is ASMR purist. I only get the sensation in real life from people genuinely explaining something to me in a very calm and ideal manner, Ideally drawing the concept with pen on paper while they are doing so. I used to have it when teachers did a good job explaining and drawing on a black board. Bummer that it only works in real life, videos don't work for me, I feel like my brain knows it's not real. I have often wondered if ASMR was some kind of reward mechanism for higher order stimuli (like learning), like a post lizard/animal brain adaptation for higher cognitive functions. Would be interesting if someone can relate to it only working in real life!
Interesting ideas.
It depends on the purpose, really. If my goal is pure tingulation, nothing does it for me like irregular tapping, and ear-to-ear breathing and whispering. With both of the former, the vibrations of the sound make it feel like there's actually someone breathing/tapping on my ear, which gives me crazy tingles.
For relaxation or entertainment, I'd go with soft-spoken roleplays. Definitely no whispers though or I'll fall asleep.
For working or sleeping, roleplays are out, because I'll subconsciously focus on the words and get distracted. For working I love "ambient ASMR". Like the type where someone just studies for an hour and all you hear are the sounds of page turning and the occasional pen scribbling, or typing on a laptop. Things like that. As long as it doesn't produce strong tingles or has spoken words, anything goes for me.
I forgot about page flipping, especially thick , large magazine pages. So soothing!
Face touching and energy plucking
I especially like when the face tapping involves hitting the mic!
Brushing noises are the best! A good variant of this kind of sound is shaving sounds. Recently I've also found some ASMR about playing with kinetic sand, and they're very relaxing and easily make me fall asleep.
Yes I forgot about the brushing. That is definitely a soothing sound. Never heard the sand but will look it up.
Professional japanese asmr is actually amazing, they're like audio dramas with professional voice actors and a plot, instead of just noises. I can't really fall asleep to them but they're great to listen to before bed to get relaxed
