The woman died at her desk and it was not discovered until 4 days later. Her body started to make an odor before that, but other people in the office thought it was an issue with the ventilation system. To be fair, the building was fairly empty due to teleworking.

You may have work hard to hold onto your job these days, but these two stories are a good reason to not live for your job -- at least mentally.

The story mentions that could have been a factor in her body not having been discovered. Huge building, mostly empty due to many hybrid and remote workers. I can see someone being slumped over...

I used to work in a position where it was easy to lean forward over my desk and take a my 10 minute power nap which I often did during my noon hour after an exhausting morning. I can easily see my co-worker in the next office thinking I was just taking a nap and not disturbing me. Hopefully they'd check on me after an hour or two though.

I cant believe this poor employee wasnt discovered til they started to decompose and smell. Ug. How sad.

I hope she died instantly from some kind of sudden aneurysm, and not that she was suffering and couldn't reach help.

The other thing I was thinking about is that, she was 60 years old, and didn't have someone to report her missing within 24 hrs. If one weren't married or living in a committed relationship where we're expected home together every day, how long until someone would notice we were gone?

In these days of remote work and automatic bill payment? Could be months to years, depending on living situation and employer attentiveness.

Holy crap! This is so true. After reading your comment, I've spend a few minutes thinking about this and if I didn't have a wife, I could probably go a full year without anyone knowing I died. I'm sure there are friends/relatives who'd be concerned if I didn't reply to text messages, but all my bills are automated as you said. It would probably be my mortgage after about 12 months who'd maybe start asking around because the payments stopped two or three months earlier.

Edit: less than an hour later and I come across this article from Japan, people dying alone and not being found for a month: https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20240830_02/

Do folks without partners have a deal set up with family/friends, where, "if I haven't replied/call back in a week, send help"?

Sometimes people miss text messages for a day or two. Doesn't make much sense to panic that they might be dead unless it has been a week plus. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
