Using matrix seems more complicated than necessary. ~ is already a centralized platform. If anything I would recommend we get a dedicated IRC server (
irc.tildes.net
). This way it will be possible to mirror your credentials on the site with IRC. You'll still be able to use Riot thanks to its compatibility with IRC.If we do go for the IRC route I'd like to push for obligatory SSL for all clients. Given that it'll be a new server with no backwards compatibility to maintain I think it's a reasonable decision.
Edit:
Other things we could mirror:
I dont necesarily agree with the topics relating to channels. I think it will be way too many channels, and they'd pop up way too fast to be able to keep track of it. Also, if people post the same news topic from different sources they'd all get a private channel, instead of these people being able to find eachother on a single channel and actually discuss things.
Instead, I'd go for a channel per group, so a
#tech
, a#comp
etc. I'm not sure if we have group-specific moderators on Tildes yet. If we do, OP status could be granted in the related channels to these people.Oops. Yeah I meant one channel per group.
Riot would be cool. Never really used it much but then again never had reason to. Open source would make a lot more sense over discord.
Yeah Riot is a great client. Bridges for Slack, Gitter, IRC, ...
It's decentralized too which is an interesting thought for tildes.net as a whole
Re: decentralization of Tildes, fyi this is addressed in the FAQ: https://docs.tildes.net/faq#why-isnt-tildes-decentralizeddistributedfederated
I have no experience of using this, all I know is it's open source, and a couple of people have spoken favourable of it
https://rocket.chat/
Like I say, I've never used rocket.
I have a fairly strong dislike of Discord though.
I use Slack, but because it's what some people decided was the best option for our needs.
i dunno. wasnt reddit doing just this and it made people hate it? why do the Reddit expats want it?
i was just kinda kidding, but i like to shit talk live
I believe OP was joking in regards to that, hence the shitpost tag
Haha I was talking to @deimos about this very very recently.
I think you'd have more luck getting a Discord to get used out of all the moderators currently here. 99% of them are using Discord already for their subreddits.
If @deimos is interested in doing something like discord (though I think it's a little redundant since this is literally a discussion board) I'm partnered with them and could probably get him in contact with the discord people and make an official partnered one.
Gives access to just a bit more customization and some "VIP" features.
Hey I'm with you on that one.
I love it for the gaming community I'm part of, but for a chat client FOR a discussion board just seems redundant to me.
The only think I'd be worried about is adding IRC too early. It might feel like we're stretched too thin. Snoonet has been supplementary to reddit for years. For some things IRC is better than slow threaded discussion.
And don't forget "deep in the venture capital hole with nothing resembling a viable business plan". I'm fine with Discord overall, but worried about what they're going to end up doing once the pressure to actually make some money inevitably shows up.
What else? They’ll do the same stuff reddit is pulling.
The time/effort required for deimos to do it alongside getting things "right" here as well as developing sounds like an unfathomably large workload. My own discord community requires 15 mods for just 2200 users because they're high activity posting 300k messages per month which is on par with the /r/overwatch discord despite their massive user count.
I think an unofficial one with the right people caring for it that says "We have the same rules as Tildes with a few extra on top to deal with typical bad discord behaviours." would be fairly effective.
A major downside of a chat community however is that it sucks comment activity out of any community that it exists for - this is what myself and Deimos discussed. Discord for example has really hurt reddit, so much so that it has driven reddit to building its own integrated chat (that will probably fail to compete with discord in quality). I'm not really sure if it's a bit too early for Tildes to support a chat community taking away activity in the earliest days where really growing user retention and activity is incredibly important.
Discord is the new IRC. Most subreddit communities have a discord. It's arguably the most user friendly chat platform and could be useful when it becomes times to grow.
I'm glad that it's usurped text and voice chat platforms, but I'm not happy that many people seem content on letting forums die in favor of discord.
there is a place for both. i enjoy in-depth discussions on forums where i can constantly refer to past threads. but sometimes, i miss real-time shittalking on a platform thats more.... ephemeral
i have few skills, but i like to think im a excellent at spewing feces
By no means am I personally content with such a developement. The way I see it is that Discord, or any similar platform, serves it's function best as a supplement to communities based around forums. In my experience live chat platforms help with reducing noise in the sub in most reddit communities I belong to.
IRC is simply a protocol - discord is a proprietary and for-profit internet service. Hardly comparable, one is an idea that anyone can implement themselves however they see fit and the other can do whatever it wants and you're hosed if you don't like it.
That is very true. What I meant is, in regards to mindshare and usage, discord has mostly taken over the various ways of using the IRC protocol to communicate. It is totally comparable because discord fills the most used role of IRC which is to facilitate real time discussion with in a community.
I don't mean to be overly critical, but can we try to avoid shit-posts? I know we're all excited about ~Tildes, but I dunno if shitposting is what we need. It's one of the reasons I really started to dislike Reddit (that and the constant meme-themed subreddits...whhhhhy?)
life cant all be non shitposts. sure, it can be overdone, but im here to have a little fun as well as great discussions and link sharing. is this not misc enough?
live a little
I was interested in ~Tildes based on the pitch that this can be a real community to share and talk about real topics.. which is why I left Digg for Reddit in the first place before it too devolved into mostly noise. It's a real worry I have.
im not going to point out how much fun you are at parties, cuz thats stupid and not funny in any way
Is that your attempt at a backhanded insult, because it comes off that way.
Per https://blog.tildes.net/announcing-tildes#high-quality-content-and-discussions
That is why I said what I said. But thanks for personally attacking me. I appreciate it. @Deimos @cfabbro
It's this type of stuff that I was sick of at Reddit: go against the Circlejerk (and yes, this is a circlejerk) and get treated like garbage. Thank you so much for the validation.
I think it was just a silly joke. I wouldn't take it so personally.
you are so welcome
Soon you'll be able to filter shitpost tags, so as long as people are appropriately tagging (no incorrect tagging for the lulz), I don't think it should be an issue at all.
I'm not so worried about the "lulz", but what if people are not tagging a genuine shitpost without the shitpost tag? Then what?
That's what I'm saying, that should not be allowed.
Is this a shitpost?
Go me for figuring out someone would show up at #tildes on Freenode sooner or later! Thanks for the invite :)
Sure thing :)
Why not just set up a discord server? much more user friendly
discord is proprietary nonsense (i do enjoy it for certain things), but i would a. like to keep tech simple and b. as open as possible
IRC being an ancient, simple mechanism supported by an untold number of projects because of its simplicity and yet is incredibly extensible
