Tildes Video Thread
So, quite a few people don't like/watch video content, and don't like seeing the homepage filled with videos. Let's try something new, see if it sticks.
What are the best videos you have watched this past week/fortnight?
Rick Ashley - Never Gonna Give You Up (Glastonbury 2023) - Never Gonna Give You Up is a better song than people give it credit for. And the live performance brought it to another level. Astley seemed genuinely appreciative of the opportunity to perform and that positivity permeated the entire performance. He's a way better live performer than I realized. His band FUCKS. And Astley made sure everyone got their props and time to shine, from his band, to his dancers, to the security.
Agreed, Astley's a great musician and in no way attempting to just ride old fame. Back in 2016 (I could have sworn this was more recent, wow) he released an album with the song This Old House which is a total banger. The video for it is pretty weak though, unfortunately.
How Queer Communities Created Secret Languages | Otherwords
YouTube – Storied – 22nd June 2023
I love Otherwords! Such a great concept and well executed.
The Secret World of Japan's Puzzle Masters puzzle box aficionado and magician Chris Ramsey goes to Japan to meet the people who are probably the world's finest traditional puzzle box makers. Ramsey can be a bit Marmite (definition 2) but in this video he's just full of joy and admiration for these masters of their craft. Also some of the boxes are just stunning.
The Biggest Scandal in Speed Typing History - speedrun nerd Karl Jobst looks into the "fastest typist in the world", Barbara Blackburn. A surprisingly deep rabbit hole! Also, competitive speed typing is a thing. Of course it's a thing.
Eink Gallery 3 vs Kaleido 3 you don't need to watch all of this, a quick skip through will be enough to show the current state of the art for colour e-ink. I was vaguely considering a Kaleido 3 device for reading comics on but having seen the brand-new Gallery 3, I think I'm going to hold on for a 10.3 inch version of that because it's stunning.
It seems like you need to choose between speed or colour quality with the two screen technologies. Personally waiting for the Tab Ultra C to come into stock but more for having a keyboard. Although Lenovo were supposed to release their dual sceen laptop this month with a colour e-ink screen on it (I think it's Kaleido)...
Looks that way, and my choice for an ereader will always be quality over speed. 1.5s page refresh is fine for full colour, I'm pretty sure my first ereader was around that sort of speed just for black and white and I managed fine with that.
I suspect the e-ink tablet isn't quite ready to be a thing yet, outside of a few specialist use cases. I think eink needs a few more generations to refine both colour density and speed. But I'm sure it'll get there.
It's a little annoying that E-Ink inc seem to have a near-monopoly on handheld-scale electronic ink displays. The market could really do with some competition, the few other players in the space seem to be sticking with tiny screens or very specialist applications.
Why EarthBound is still Great Almost 30 Years Later - Noclip Hall of Fame - NoClip Crew
I've always heard that Earthbound was one of the best (J)RPGs. I'd never seen anything of the game before though, and my only exposure to the characters was Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
This video is a narrated walkthrough of the first 30 minutes, where one guy is trying to show the other why they love the game.
I left the video struck by how "beautiful" I found the art, and with a big appreciation with how well the game nails its tone.
Now I want to (legally) play this game, and really hope it gets put on a modern system or PC.
I wish it were possible to deliver to an adult the feeling of playing Earthbound as a kid. I played it at about 12, and it was pure wish fulfillment: leaving on your own to go on an adventure with an ATM card connected to a bank account your dad keeps topped up for you? Sign me up!
Earth, Kiss, and Fire - I Was Made For Boogie Wonderland
This is fresh off the presses!
The Continuity of Splines is a video that I’ve had in my backlog for quite some time, but after having finally watched it I can’t stop thinking about how awesome and well made it is! I wish every teaching videos were this good, big kudos to the author.
This video is so good, and the first time I watched it, I laughed when she "broke character" to describe one curve's behavior as how one point "[...] yeets off into fucking nowhere"
hbomberguy - roblox_oof is simply incredible. You think it's going to be a short video about the oof sound from Roblox, but then you notice the 2 hour runtime and realise it must be much more than that.
It descends into a complex analysis of a ridiculous excuse for a human being, as well as a compelling exploration into how artists have been ignored throughout history. It's riveting stuff and kept me thoroughly engaged throughout.

How Water-Only Fasts Can Heal SERIOUS Diseases | Dr. Alan Goldhamer - Plant Chompers, 54 minutes
I really like this channel, finding it high-quality, science-based, and informative. But at the start of this video, I assumed it was some sort of quackery and wondered why it was given airtime. But by the end, I was really intrigued about what's going on at TrueNorth.
Books and articles published in science journals are all listed and hyperlinked in the video description.
