Can you elaborate on Diesel being tough to work with? Through his movies and his professional life it seems he hasn't had it easy and had to carve out his own path.

He’s controlling, and apparently shows up late to work and out of shape, and is generally unpleasant to be around. That’s from what I read. He’s got a huge ego.
Not entirely sure which way the blame is but he and Dwayne Johnson couldn't get along on set which is why Hobbs was absent for a few and somehow managed to get his own spinoff..

I do wonder if the franchise would have gone so wildly super-hero if Paul Walker hadn't died. He was really into cars, which is what it was supposed to be about. Fast cars and more detective/police based. Instead, it's car based Avengers. Nearly every blow traded would rewire your brain and leave you in a coma/vegetative state.
The whole Fast franchise went from almost believable to laughable in about 3 movies.
For me its ok, honestly I like movies that fun and not serious and do not even try to pretend to be serious. Jason Momoa in the latest movie is very good imho.

Just make a good one of those. I don't really care if it's dialed back or turned to 11, what's good about the franchise is speed/stunts, relaxed vibe and something resembling a mystery/heist/twist.
I haven't seen the latest one but the ones before it leaned heavily on the CGI with nonsense plot (even if I like the family shtick). Get a good script, sprinkle in some jokes and have a couple action set pieces with as much as possible done with real stunts.
This stuff usually happens when the last movie didn't turn a profit or if there is a declining trend. Maybe Diesel is just tired of doing them.

When they put a car in space, I noped out completely from the franchise. It got far too farfetched far too quickly.
