It feels like they had a quota of Jurassic Park tropes to meet and then immediately exceeded it.

I get the feeling that modern movie studies are absolutely terrified of making anything remotely original\risky. It's gotta have pre-existing content and absolutely HAS to be made into a "cinematic universe".

It seems all the execs forgot someone's gotta come up with an original idea at some point.

Yeah, Jurassic Park is in the state it's in because the new ones made a shit load of money. They don't want to make anything new because they don't have to.

I’m sure they were not going for a feeling of disappointment, but that’s what it got from me. ScarJo better get three for her after the hit her brand is gonna take for this.

I still look fondly at Scarlett from films like The Island, Lost in Translation, Her, Match Point, and the Prestige.

The most well known and common product is what makes a brand. Hers, at present, is bad action movies.

In the past ten years her only non-franchise work has been: Hail, Caesar!, Rough Night, Marriage Story, Jojo Rabbit, Asteroid City, and Fly Me To The Moon. Important to also note that Rough Night and Fly Me To The Moon were commercial plays that flopped.

I’d also throw in other endeavors TBH. Any A-lister trying to bankroll something other than more studio drivel I think deserves some consideration.

Except for Whalburgers. That guy ran out of free passes when he assaulted that Asian guy in my book.

I hope this bombs so hard because it looks absolutely terrible and they have run one of my favorite movies into the ground. The original Jurassic Park is probably my favorite film of all time and I have a soft spot for Lost World even though no one else likes it. But after that it's all terrible. I kinda like the first World until they continued ruining it even further with the rest of the "trilogy"

    Ugh.

The only way another movie like this would work is if they brought it back down to a personal level somehow. They need a plausible reason for the characters to go to Site B, maybe some kind of storm throws a ship off course and they crash on the island or something. They could use the plot point from this trailer that governments don't patrol the area anymore even though that doesn't make a ton of sense, but it could work.

And then make it a survival story. These people are stuck on the island and have to avoid dinos and find a way off. Make it personal, make it with strong characters that have arcs, focus on a smaller story, make the dinosaurs feel like animals again, go back to the roots.

"We need DNA from three big dinosaurs" is the dumbest and weakest plot device they could have went with.

Actually no Im sure they could have come up with something dumber, but it's still a horrible idea that no one cares about.

They have absolutely zero idea why the first film and why dinosaurs in general are interesting to people.

It doesn’t matter that the plot is stupid. It’s just set dressing. All of these movies are “watch cool CGI monsters do stuff”. The first movie had a plot where they made an even more deadly custom Dino just for the heck of it (or because, yeah, I guess that was the only reasonable way to make their park operations profitable…), and also had a ride where the cars were on a giant metal track but also were, for some reason, hackable to turn into functional autonomous vehicles that could easily handle uneven terrain. Hackable by children.

And if we are being honest, it’s not like these movies are necessarily the worst of the “turn your brains off” metagenre. I have definitely seen worse, though since they aren’t really memorable I wouldn’t be able to point out an example.

And that is the problem. That isn't how Jurassic Park should be approached.

Hell to quote Alan Grant in the first film: "They're not monsters, Lex, they're just animals." https://youtu.be/zrIpO2EeFBk

That is the core problem with every Jurassic World film. They treat dinosaurs as a resource or monsters instead of just animals.

Lost World had an interesting theme on using dinosaurs as a resource/entertainment/etc, but the theme of the movie was again that they are animals and should be left alone and not treated as resources. https://youtu.be/GDWcJl573PU

This is the only way anyone could ever make a good Jurassic Park film again, is by following this philosophy set out from the first and second films. Not CGI monster fest. That's not at all what the franchise is about. If they want CGI monster fest, they should go make a Godzilla or King Kong movie or something.

To be frank, I agree with your opinion, but I have liked dumb CGI action flicks in the past and I don't think it's helpful to shame people for liking them. (not that you are shaming them either!)

Michael Crichton would be rolling over in his grave. But who am I kidding, if he were alive today he’d probably be full-blown MAGA, raving on X about paleontology is too woke now or something.

Your reply has me trying to step back and mull over the ideas around parable and story and genre. Arguably, the original King Kong has elements of Frankenstein in it. The misunderstood monster. I'm mulling over your ideas about theme for the JP franchise without any conclusions yet.

What made me think of this is that I agree with you - I'm not a fan of how dumb the JP franchise has gotten. That said - I saw someone describe Kong x Godzilla as essentially crossing over into WWE territory (which I also don't care for). Ironically, I think that's why I tried it out AND vaguely forgettably enjoyed it. I had rock-bottom expectations. I'm not going to say it's 'good'. I'd call it kind of silly fun. It didn't offend me despite it dabbling in potentially problematic indigenous magic crystals and nonsense 'out the wazoo' (as my dad used to say).

Contrast this with what's gone on with the Planet of the Apes movies. Terrible and campy OG franchise and then a bad initial reboot with each consecutive film getting better until the last couple are kind of peak story/monster/CGI experiences IMO.

I don't follow what studio had what property close enough to know who owns/runs what properties, but it seems like very different strategies. Maybe someday enough people will stop going to JP franchise films enough that the studio will have to worry about story and character and logic again instead of what sure seems like just mining some formula.

(edit): now I kind of want to start a rumor that the JP franchise is going to crossover/reboot a Creature from the Black Lagoon franchise. (I kid!)

The first movie has a custom dino plot? The first World did, but other than the "frog DNA" stuff I don't recall a custom dino plot in the OG

I haven't seen the Park sequels since they came out and I was a kid back then. I want to say that they were less dumb, but it takes a lot less to impress a child than an adult.
