Large scale productions about (passing) fads are weird to me. You'll always be too late. Besides what the fuck are they even beyond very ugly influencer dolls?

I don't know, that movie was a one off moonshot. I get your point though, it could work and a 200m blowout perhaps justifies the gamble. But I feel that Emojis aren't a fad. Everyone uses them all...

Still a bit dumb, but maybe not as bad as the Trolls.
(Fun fact I'm learning now: she's based on a Nordic folklore monster, according to a Chinese source on Wikipedia. I have no clue which!)

I did not know this, thanks for the added context. That makes it make a little more sense. I could be wrong but in my eyes this is a TikTok trend first and a series of illustrations second.
No, but I'm not the target audience. And to my point: that movie bombed. Even worse, Bratz is an established children's toy IP. Those tend to fare better than memes.

why not get the real deal with Fidget Spinners: The First Movie (trailer)? Nolan should have been focusing on this instead of Tenent... or combine them.

It says many of the flippers have posted they will stop buying and focus on selling, with many slashing prices on remaining stock hoping to be rid of them.
But maybe there's where the movie comes in: not riding on the hype, but hoping to turn it into a sustainable market character. Maybe they're trying to make them Hello Kitty/Chiikawa instead of beanie babies.
When CBC this hour has 22 minutes and SouthPark already aired segments on them, it's firmly an old fad by now. I can't wait to see the last of them.
edit just checked, the 本我 model mentioned has further sunk in price. Now $600 HKD, listing 2 weeks old on this site

Do you not remember the Bratz movie?.
Something must work for these movies cos they keep making them.

Man, if Hollywood functioned this way in 2017 they would have had "A Fidget Spinner movie" released before the fad even ran out.
2017 you say
why not get the real deal with Fidget Spinners: The First Movie (trailer)?
Nolan should have been focusing on this instead of Tenent... or combine them.
Except for a few obvious tells, I feel like it's really hard to tell that's a fake trailer and not for some legitimate (but terrible) movie.
If the Trolls dolls can get 3 movies I'm not surprised they would try to do this.
This reads like a joke from The Studio, except it's real.
