I remember her mostly from Heroes. Save the cheerleader, save the world. I actually never watched the show, but remember how she dominated the show's marketing. And apparently she also voiced Kairi from the game Kingdom Hearts! Didn't know that one.

Sad though. 36 is way too young. I didn't even know she was just a bit younger than me. I was in college when Heroes got popular.

It's so sad to read about someone so young and struggled for so many years. That her mother seemed to have been very bad for her as one of those awful child actor parent types. tw abuse. (Variety)

Her brother, Jansen Panettiere, died suddenly in February 2023 from cardiomegaly (enlarged heart) coupled with aortic valve complications, his family said in a statement at the time. He was 28.

    Just..... Sad. So young.

Yeah, that's the part of the article that really struck me. How horrible would it be as a parent to lose one adult child, and then a few years later, lose the other. Sounds like the cause of death isn't released. All I can hope is that it was something quick and painless, and not related to pain she carried from the struggles she detailed in her memoir.

I have the same reaction as OP, I've watched season 1 (and 2? I don't remember) of Heroes and she's in my age bracket so it's all the more shocking.

From the article, she had some mental difficulties to say the least :

Panettiere has been candid about her struggles from child stardom through adulthood. She released a memoir this May titled "This Is Me: A Reckoning."

In the memoir, she shares "a rare and intimate glimpse into her life behind closed doors, opening up about postpartum depression, addiction and recovery, trauma, domestic abuse, and loss," according to a synopsis for her book.

In an interview with "Good Morning America" in 2022, Panetierre opened up about grappling with alcoholism and postpartum depression.

"I didn't know where the alcoholism was ending and the postpartum was beginning," Panetierre said. "And I ran myself pretty ragged."

This is really sad. I grew up watching her, I remember being really into heroes when it came out, and we're similar ages so I kinda grew up alongside her. She always seemed like a really nice person in interviews.

Does anyone else find it a little gauche how when a celebrity dies, and the cause of death is unknown, media outlets pour over memoirs and interviews for clues about whether it could have been suicide, or drug related or whatever?

It could have been, or it could have been an accident, or a medical issue.

I understand the impulse to want answers, but it just feels kind of disrespectful to within 24 hours of death, search for clues that someone killed themselves. If it was me, I'd want to at least have a few weeks before people started openly speculating on whether I committed suicide, especially if I didn't.

I hear you but can’t help to think that the “how” is such a defining factor in a death (especially this young) and sometimes I struggle to see why there should be so much secrecy about it. The speculation is always going to be there and much more when it’s kept under wraps. It’s none of our business sure but it’s the one question everybody’s asking and it’s almost unnatural to not ask that question if someone told you a 36yo died.

In a perfect world, there wouldn't need to be shame about it, but also people could not have their family member's life talked about in the tabloids as gossip fodder. Celebrity is deeply unhealthy...

Celebrity is deeply unhealthy for so many reasons and not just for the person themself.

Yeah I agree with you, it's definitely the natural instinct to speculate and be curious. it's not quite the speculation I find off-putting, it's the immediate trawling through memoirs, interviews, or whatever to try to find answers.

That's what I'd do if I were a family member and someone close to me died, but I wouldn't want the media or the public doing it, even if it's understandable why they would.

Like, I just imagine if my wife or my sister were famous, got into a car accident or had a heart attack and died, and the media immediately went "in an Instagram post six months ago she said she was feeling sad, and in her book, she said that she felt isolated and depressed as a teenager, and she mentioned she had a bad relationship with her father in this interview" implying it may have been a suicide despite no evidence of that at all.

It would really piss me off and bother me that people were digging into her personal life just to satisfy their curiousity and impling that she was suicidal when she wasn't.

Not necessarily saying that's what happened here, but it still just doesn't sit well with me when that kind of thing happens.

I never really watched the shows/movies she was in, but Kingdom Hearts was a big part of my childhood. She voiced Kairi, was very shocked when I heard the news. Sad news all around.
