p.s. I love Doechii. @kfwyre, did you see her Tiny Desk performance from a few months ago? IMO it was the best Tiny Desk of the year. I really should have posted it but I was unsure how many people here on Tildes would actually enjoy it, especially since it's a unique mix of jazz, beat/slam poetry, gospel, r&b, broadway-esque interludes, and hip hop... and also pretty damn NSFW lyrics-wise.
I hadn't seen that. The only thing I knew of Doechii was this video, which my husband showed to me, after which I immediately posted it here! 😁 And WOW you weren't kidding on the Tiny Desk...

And WOW you weren't kidding on the Tiny Desk performance! Thanks for linking it -- it was excellent. "Nissan Altima" goes SO hard.

I have not listened to Anxiety in its entirety before (but had heard snippets). Going into this music video, I knew she sampled Somebody That I Used to Know. However, I assumed she only sampled Gotye in the chorus, and not have the entire song be Gotye's instrumentation. As someone on the Millenial/Gen Z divide who remembers Gotye, I found sampling to this level distract from the song. I would have preferred Doechii sample Gotye less and weave it in in just the chorus or something.
That Tiny Desk performance is fantastic. I have not heard any of her music before, and I loved it with the jazz instrumentation. According to YouTube comments, apparently that is not how the studio versions were recorded, which is a shame since the Tiny Desk versions are fantastic.
Hard agree on the jazzy tiny desk sound. It was also my introduction to her music, and while I do like many of her studio recorded songs, I'd love some more along the lines of the tiny desk concert.

Yeah, that is a much better term that just did not come to my mind. I think the fact that I called it a sample indicates my false assumptions going into it, which led to me not enjoying it as much.

The new video references the original one by starting and ending in the original apartment/dorm room (and in a sense represents her growth as an artist who still struggles with anxieties).
Her entire YouTube channel is fascinating because all of her videos are still available, starting from 10 years ago when she first made a YouTube account to start posting videos. There are old...

Something I noticed about Doechii is how she switches up the instrumentals every time she performs. Between Colbert, Tiny Desk, the Grammy's, and the actual album, I've heard her rap Denial is a...

And the famous dance number based on that song which Doechii (or her choreographer, Robbie Blue) was also very clearly inspired by:

YVW. And yeah I love the praise break at the end of Nissan Altima too. :P

It's hard to call this a sample honestly, it's more like a mashup

Her very first YouTube video
A minute long video from 5 years ago (Jan 12, 2020) after she got fired from her job and said she's going to try cold calling labels just to see if any of them have an open internship she can get into.
Oh, nice. I hadn't actually seen that original video before so didn't catch the reference to it. Thanks for sharing it!

I'm a sucker for high concept music videos, as well as group dance sequences, so this is right up my alley.
(Oh, and the song is great too!)

its so catchy. I first heard this from Sleepy Hallow. Doechii is boss and her TinyDesk might be the best ever.
