Offbeat Fridays – The thread where offbeat headlines become front page news
Tildes is a very serious site, where we discuss very serious matters like steam machine, ipo and fathers. Tags culled from the highest voted topics from the last seven days, if anyone was alert.
But one of my favourite tags happens to be offbeat! Taking its original inspiration from Sir Nils Olav III, this thread is looking for any far-fetched offbeat stories lurking in the newspapers. It may not deserve its own post, but it deserves a wider audience!
DuckDuckGo’s AI Feature Is Telling Users That Trump Died of Rabies Earlier This Month
This is your reminder that LLMs are word machines, not truth machines. But you have to love the results of commitment to the bit.
In other news - Masayoshi Son of SoftBank has produced a meme for the ages.
Okay but the article that the AI pulled from is hilarious. Almost a shame it's made up, I like the idea of the Vatican vampire-proofing Trump's coffin just in case.
This is awesome, and also the top posts in r/poisonai are hilarious
Got me thinking, did the Simpson's predict the end?
OK I was wondering what was the deal with this golden goose thing. I saw it all over my Mastodon instance yesterday, but was too afraid too ask.
Gracie the giraffe has gone missing in Texas
Ah yes, look for the rounded ear giraffe amongst the, I'm sure, many other wild and free Texas giraffes.
For the record, this is the second time in as many weeks that I've heard of missing giraffes in the US. At least the other giraffes were found.
Guys, stop misplacing your giraffes.
It's so bad in Texas that even Giraffes are running away
In Texas, even the pets that run away are bigger
Update from watching the national news: Gracie has been found! A helicopter found her 4 miles from the ranch, but 50 miles by car, so they're putting a team together to retrieve her and bring her home.
Also I wonder if the workers are Animal Crossing fans...
Guinness crowns the world’s loudest person at 122.4 decibels
Quick internet search says that's louder than angle grinder, rock concert, and jackhammer. Of course that's not sustained volume, so one burst probably pretty harmless
Does 6 seconds and arrow not sound perfectly doable? But of course there's an accuracy portion involved:

‘The Peanut Butter Smearer’ strikes at Ky. fair, several homes; raises safety concerns
While this is a legit safety concern for people with allergies, there's something surreal about it. Also, their video report at the top of the article is fantastic viewing. This line, spoken by a straight faced on-the-scene reporter, would've done numbers on Vine:

Cearly the ECB didn't have enough "Mandatory Proletarian Solidarity Sessions." For shame, ECB. For shame.
Ed Norton watched Team USA Lose Tonight Left Him Talking To Himself
I'm not sure if this is appropriate or suitable, but the All Blacks squad for 2026 was announced earlier this week: https://www.allblacks.com/news/all-blacks/2026-all-blacks-and-maori-all-blacks-squads-named-monday
What's crazy to me is that of the 34 players announced, 9 of them are from the Hurricanes. This shouldn't be too surprising, as the Hurricanes beat the Chiefs with a whopping 60-5 in the finals for this season of Super Rugby: https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/sport/608292/hurricanes-blow-chiefs-away-in-windy-welly-to-win-super-rugby-pacific-title
Explanation: the All Blacks is the national rugby team for New Zealand, Hurricanes is the Wellington regional team and the Chiefs being the team for Hamilton.
This part confuses me - why is it "crazy" if it isn't surprising?
I did word it weirdly. When I learnt about this, I was surprised at the numbers. But if one were to take a step back and look at the performance of the team overall and throughout the season, it starts to make more sense. Maybe I should have said "in light of the past performance this season, this may be less surprising".
Gotcha, thanks for the clarification! I actually am familiar with the All Blacks from haka videos and the Black Ferns from watching Olympic rugby!
