I'd be interested in some Norwegian sources if you don't mind.

Google translate for text works very well for Germanic languages, but does it do audio?

Oh man, surely the day will come. Any Google-heads here willing to owe up on the billions of dollars spent on voice translate? Surely it's development needed for eventual singularity /s

It would probably be better to have a native speaker translate. Sometimes things get interpreted very differently in different languages.

Three hospitals went bankrupt today. In the Netherlands. I'm honestly at a loss for words that this is possible. Annoyed/angry that these institutions don't get the same government treatment as the banks did in 2008, looking at it from face value that is very, very wrong.

They've had major financial problems for a long time, hiring new people has proven more expensive then what they had anticipated/budgeted during this time of worker shortage. During the last months they worked on a rescue plan but didn't manage to convince the health insurance companies and they lost trust. They have some history, all 3 went near bankrupt around 2008-2013 but were saved, but apparently they were not able to change enough because they never were truly trouble free.

We're collectively brain dead. Money finished, we began rotting. Country gonna fail in 3... 2... 1...

In other news, Saudites like to dissect Saudites especially in my city. We also continue to construct huge things nobody cares, and feed tax money to private sector's honourable entrepreneurs.

Most importantly a bottle of beer was .75 our-cents 20 years ago. It's 11 our-dollars currently. I can't drink alcoholics because I feel insulted when I buy them at those huge prices. People starting to brew at home, mass immigration to chemistry in 3... 2... 1...

In lighter news, when I look out of the window the clouds look beautiful, as if Bob Ross painted them just above us. It might be that I cleaned my glasses, though...

Edit: I forgot to mention that my country's Turkey, if that was not, sadly, obvious from the news themselves.

Yeah, hopefully... These are some of the nicest places on earth, but look how we're strangling Turkey over here, and how in Italy, for example, sheer idiocy is in power today. All over the world there's an epidemic of idiocy (ironically just when information is more readily available than ever to a public wider than ever), but here around us it's amplified so much more. I've accepted by now that all we can do is to just navigate this ocean of idiocy and find islands of reason and love (which I can say are the two pillars of a peaceful life for me).

I think too that Mediterranean area is a cultural group more similar in itself than European countries are or Middle-Eastern countries are. The only big divide is religion IMO.

Just FYI. The noun "alcoholic" is used only for people: a person with alcohol addiction (alcoholism) is an alcoholic. To refer to drinks which contain alcohol, you use the adjective "alcoholic": they are alcoholic drinks, but not "alcoholics".

Your sentence looks like you want to drink people! :)

    Some news from the Netherlands:

Former PM Wim Kok has passed away. He was an exceptionally influential figure in Dutch politics, domestic as well as abroad. And a lot of the news cycle seems filled with different opinion pieces on his legacy. Kok had essentially set the stage for the last few decades of Dutch politics, both for his followers as his opponents, and his death has come as something of a shock. If this subject strikes anyone's curiosity I'd be willing to give a layman's summary of who Kok was.

In Switzerland we have a big popular votation coming up; one subject is to clarify the hierarchy of laws and put the Swiss constitution (which contains all kind of stuff, since popular initiatives can add to it) on top of international treaties/agreement. This would probably have far reaching consequences since there's some incompatibilities between the Swiss constitution and some of the treaties we are in. Although the principle underlying the initiative are good it's hard to ignore it's a move from the right wing SVP party to try to get their shitty initiatives finally applied.

The other subject, almost as important, is to help farmers that don't cut their cow's horns.

        Okay. Here's my suggestion.

You make a weekly topic in ~news. Post it every week. Call it something like "This week's foreign language news". The format of the topic is that people post comments which include a link to a foreign language news article, plus their own translated summary of the article.

Don't put news topics in ~talk; put them in ~news, where people expect to see and post news. Make the discussion news-based, with links to actual news articles.

If you and others are willing to do the work of making translated summaries (with a link to foreign language source) that sounds fantastic! I'm not sure it counts as 'open discussion' yes the translation will introduce bias and perhaps other users will disagree on the summary and people might ask to clarify points but that's not the same as just opinions.

It would be really cool to get Tildes users who read non-english press to share stuff they think is important.

I'd like to direct your attention to this reply to a similar question in ~tildes recently. In short: just post what you want, and see what happens.

I will leave this thread up to gauge interest, to see if there is a point in that at all.

The news of my country, the UK, specifically England, was, is, and will be for another century; Brexit. And to the detriment of everything else. Conspiracy hat on: it's a diversion for all the failing and continual privitisation of the country and will lead to the UK (or at least England and Wales) becoming a backward throwback to the worst of the 70s. Hopefully the music will thrive like it did back then (please I need a silver lining).
