I don't like that we're calling a tie a failure. Feels like there needs to be a third path :-)

Yeah, tie's a tie. Redo, not fail.

Funnily enough, I didn't pay attention to the hands at the bottom of the screen until near the end of my playthrough, so I just defaulted to ties being wins the two times they happened before actual failures occurred.

Well if a tie is a redo I'm fairly certain it's just a 50/50 cause the tie doesn't affect the final odds of winning/losing

I was so tempted to just flip a coin to decide if a tie is a win or a loss, but ultimately the point isn't exactly RPS, it's a demonstration of the chances of hitting 1/3^12 or whatever (I didn't see how deep the rabbit hole goes, I lost after 4 games). I'm more proud of myself for demonstrating the self control of accepting defeat than I would have been if I'd won because I flipped coins on ties

I will avoid any spoilers, but I failed :( I can't imagine how much work this took to create.

I don't understand YouTube, how does one progress beyond the first video?

You just click on win or lose. It will take you to the next video.

For the record I'm on the mobile site, and watching YouTube on the mobile browser doesn't seem to have annotations. Had to open the video in the YouTube to see the options.

Oh the video just ended and didn't have any buttons for me. Oh well I lost any way, I'm sure it's a neat thing nonetheless.

This is a very old style of youtube video format that relied on annotations (which could include links to other videos) in order to progress. But YT killed off annotations in 2018, so the resulting workaround is to use end cards that can link to a few other videos.

But youtube is on many devices and results may vary. It's also not impossible to hide the end cards on desktop with UBlock Origin so that may be another issue.

Are you watching it via mobile browser(that is what I do) the video only seems to show on the YouTube application. I am not sure about desktop browsers though!

Very cool. I also did not win although I got farther than I thought I would. I also found myself actually doing the motions against a screen, which was funny.

spoiler for not winning I lost so many times in a row that I made it into Losing Streak Turbo Mode, testing my anti-luck trying to go for a one in a million losing streak. But apparently I'm not quite that unlucky, either.

        But yeah, that was fun!

I suspect this isn't an exercise in statistics anyway, but in psychology... under what conditions do players cheat? From the start? Or more likely to cheat if a run has already been going well,...

        SPOILER Box

I thought it was going that direction too, but I guess Grey here decided to go a more philosophical route. you hit the lose route and you get up to 2 more extra chances. You also have a lose route for after you reach a million and go for a billion, and after a billion if you go for a trillion.

Then if you achieve that trillion you go into how a genuine trillion winner would be far in the future, since there haven't been a trillion people in all of human history yet. Which gives hope that humanity can prosper and beat its own odds of destroying itself.

It's a bit hokey, but he does ultimately say in the end (win or lose) that this was simply a mass experiment he did as a statistics teacher that he always wanted to do to a mass audience.

I remember reading that the optimal strategy for Rock Paper Scissors is to play what would have lost to your opponent's previous choice. It's not perfect, but it gives you the best odds of winning. Sadly that didn't work here, and I lost in the third round.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks about this kind of thing as well. Probability and how humans perceive it is endlessly fascinating. Derren Brown did a fantastic TV special about probability called The System, where he demonstrates the coin-flipping principle among other things. I remember it being really enjoyable, although I have a lot of love for the man's work. It's worth a watch if you can find it!
