Zohran Mamdani topples Andrew Cuomo in NYC mayoral race

    • Jeff Coltin (Politico)

The 33-year-old Democratic Socialist lawmaker outpaced the former governor, who has conceded, in a stunning primary, signaling generational change in the Democratic Party.

I don't know if the establishment will rally for round two in November, but for now I am overjoyed. Just 48 hours ago I thought he was going to lose by a hair. There are going to be a million takeaways from tonight, and I'm sure a lot of people will downplay the win because it was over an unpopular perv who resigned in disgrace, but I hope this signals to enough people within the party that this is the type of candidate that people are hungry for. Obviously, it doesn't hurt to have an incredibly talented communicator and a phenomenal campaign, but the issues were the driving force behind Mamdani's win. Shout out to Brad Lander for stepping up and pushing back on the (Islamophobic) attacks that tried to paint Mamdani as an antisemite.

      Finally, something good happened.

*The official data wont be out for a minute, but some of the latest polling info was interesting.

The bit about all the money that the Democratic Party is wasting on “young men“ really highlights just how far out of step the Democratic national party is with people generally. There are some good Democratic candidates in my state of North Carolina, but on the national stage it’s atrocious. They seem to have absolutely no idea about what is driving the anxiety of Americans today.

How does Cuomo get to run in the primary and pivot to being an Independent during the general? Or am I misunderstanding. I know NYC usually has a larger candidate field but like, pick a lane. ಠ_ಠ

As I understand it, primaries are generally an internal party event that aren't particularly regulated, its basically a party deciding who gets to be marked "Democratic Party" on the ballot in the general election. But neither party punishes people who lose their primaries if they run as independents again .

I know NYC does shit differently but this feels like a flaw. Maybe I'm wrong though and it's a net good

Some places don't let you, ala sore loser laws. New York and Conneticut are apparently the only two places that currently don't prevent this:

Some places don't let you, ala sore loser laws.

...a sore loser law is a law prohibiting the loser in a primary election from then running as an independent or representing another political party in the general election, thus basically blocking them from appearing on the general election ballot

New York and Conneticut are apparently the only two places that currently don't prevent this:

Some states accomplish the same goal by having simultaneous registration dates for the primary and the general election. Only the states of Connecticut and New York have neither a sore loser law nor simultaneous registration deadlines.

TIL. This is a pretty clever way of implementing it actually.

Ceasefire Collapse as Israel Accuses Iran of Missile Strike and Orders Retaliation

There are a lot of stories in the last few days about Trump inserting himself into the conflict between Israel and Iran, and then trying to control the blowback through desperate tweets.

Trump not happy with Israel and Iran

Personal commentary on this: Trump is putting himself in a position where he can't blame other people for failure. He will, but it probably won't work like it usually does. Of course, we've been waiting for him to have accountability for his reckless incompetence for a long time.

Supreme Court limits nationwide injunctions in birthright citizenship orde

The majority opinion, written by Justice Amy Coney Barrett, didn't rule on whether President Trump's executive order violates the 14th Amendment or the Nationality Act. Instead, it focused on whether federal courts have the power to issue nationwide blocks.

"Universal injunctions likely exceed the equitable authority that Congress has given to federal courts," the conservative majority said. "The Court grants the Government's applications for a partial stay of the injunctions entered below, but only to the extent that the injunctions are broader than necessary to provide complete relief to each plaintiff with standing to sue."
