I know ICE is surging everywhere, but Minnesota is on a whole another level.

None of the reasons given make any sense. Fraud? Sanctuary cities? Lack of visibility into voter records? That is true for most cities. It seems pure capricious vindictiveness targeted at Walz.

I'm just listening to an episode "Cancel Me, Daddy" (recommend the podcast, episode is "How ICE turns protest into a battlefield) with guest NYT writer Jamelle Bouie and they just made the point that it was probably as much about Walz as it was about Trump losing the 2020 election and the George Floyd protests. They say that public opinion turned on Trump after the protests in a way that it hadn't before and in a way that got people activated and engaged politically. Without them, he may have been able to pull off re-election.

Given the right wing claims of lawlessness in Minneapolis it seems likely that Miller and Noem anticipated the "excuse" for the Insurrection Act to come from "riots" and tbh probably hoped an ICE agent got killed because I think they see their peons as expendable.

And that's speculation to an extent, but it seems like they thought they just needed a lever to crack MN, and they thought they had a big enough one, but they cracked the floe they were standing on instead.

It's weird because they have the absolutely horrible connivers like Miller and the (also horrible) dumbasses like Noem on the same team and you never know if the strategy being planned will flop or not because it's bad strategy or because they put a dumbass in charge of it.

It may be speculation, but it makes a lot of sense. There are definitely people who support violent responses. I keep having to explain to people that local police can't arrest ICE or do anything else proactive because the Trump admin would use any action by them as justification to escalate things, and potentially use it as a way to drag down Minnesota politicians too.

That's also why the police are so focused on crowd patrol: so long as no ICE or federal agents get killed, the Trump admin can't easily justify escalating. With the current situation, the Trump administration looks to be solidly in the wrong to a majority of the public. Even other Republicans are calling them out for this. As things stand, there is no justification or good way to spin the murders. If the protests do turn violent though, that can change.

Related: The ABC national news tonight had a soundbite from someone in Minneapolis saying they fear it's being used as a "test case" for similar action in other cities. Hopefully, this test proves to be a failure.

And if it had been other people killed besides Renee Good and Alex Pretti, if it had been immigrants whether Somali or Latino, or brown or Black folks in general, anyone with actual horrible histories... I guarantee more of the muck would have stuck to them. More of the lies would be believed and distract from the actions of DHS being the problem. We have seen how people respond and dismiss their deaths for any number of past wrongs, even fictional ones.

It should not have taken their deaths for people to wake up. It shouldn't have taken the deaths of white US citizens for broader society to care, continually. And credit to Minneapolis because they stepped up before this. And there is always more grief when people can see themselves in a victim... But why can't more people see themselves in the long list of names that did not begin with Rodney King but probably started there for people my age.

My grief feels like a hole large enough to swallow the world, because each time it grows larger until it joins the previous time, which grows anew. They can't stand alone because the walls of the hole fall in as every unnecessary death, and brutality, and cruelty runs in as one deep bitter current of humanity's worst nature, eating away at everything. Until the world falls into it.

Hope is harder to hold to tonight.

Perhaps the Trump-administration officials had hoped that a few rabble-rousers would get violent, justifying the kind of crackdown he seems to fantasize about.

Trump Backpedals From Portraying Alex Pretti As a 'Domestic Terrorist' and 'Would-Be Assassin'

Trump Backpedals From Portraying Alex Pretti As a 'Domestic Terrorist' and 'Would-Be Assassin'

In both cases, video evidence contradicted the government's version of events. Since millions of Americans have seen footage of the Good and Pretti shootings, which does not support the claim that either was bent on murder, Trump had to choose between sticking with a clearly false narrative, asking Americans to disbelieve their lying eyes, and back-pedaling from that blatantly inaccurate story. Although respect for reality has never been one of Trump's strong suits, he seems to have taken the latter course.

Exactly. Trump backpedals from nothing. He is a narcissist who only wants the person in front of him to like him. 99% of the time, it's awful people around him. He just had a phone call with Walz, and so he's doing something Walz asked him to do. But he's not even fully into it, and there is no real action to back up his words (things are "changing", but there is no sign that anything on the ground is actually any better).

They ‘Had Done Everything Right.’ ICE Detained Them Anyway. (Gift)

More than 100 refugees with no criminal record from about a dozen countries have been arrested in Minnesota by immigration agents in recent weeks and flown to detention centers in Texas for interviews, according to lawyers, family members and faith leaders. At least some, including Ms. Mehari, were eventually released in Texas, leaving them to find their own way home.

The Trump administration had announced early this month that it would “re-examine thousands of refugee cases through new background checks.” Officials said they would focus on people who had arrived in the United States in recent years and were yet to obtain green cards, or legal permanent residency, starting with 5,600 refugees in Minnesota.

The announcement, by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, did not say that refugees would be rounded up and jailed for the review to take place.

Some refugees have been released after hourslong interviews in Texas, often with only the shirts on their backs, their documents still with Immigration and Customs Enforcement in St. Paul. Family and friends have scrambled to buy them bus and plane tickets home.

Mr. Ali said that he protested when his belongings were confiscated, and that agents responded by pushing him to the ground, kneeling on him and beating him. His uncle, who is a nurse, said he had made an appointment at a clinic to check his nephew’s neck, shoulders and back, as well as to have his ribs X-rayed.

That picture at the top of the article, with the thug hiding his face behind a scarf with a skull on it…

Have you looked at our caps recently? Our caps? The badges on our caps, have you looked at them?

      What? No. A bit.

      They've got skulls on them.

      Mm?

Have you noticed that our caps have actually got little pictures of skulls on them? …Are we the baddies?

Well, maybe they're the skulls of our enemies.

Maybe, but is that how it comes across? It doesn't say next to the skull, you know, "Yeah, we killed him but trust us, this guy was horrid."

Well, no, but I mean, what do skulls make you think of?

      Death, cannibals, beheading, erm… pirates?

      Pirates are fun.

I didn't say we weren't fun, but fun or not, pirates are still the baddies. I just can't think of anything good about a skull.

What about pure Aryan skull shape?

Even that is more usually depicted with the skin still on, whereas the allies—

You haven't been listening to ally propaganda. They're bound to say we're bad guys.

But they didn't get to design our uniforms and their symbols are all, you know, quite nice, stars, stripes, lions, sickles.

What's so good about a sickle?

      Well, nothing.

And if there's one thing we've learnt in 1,000 miles of retreat, it's that Russian agriculture's in dire need of mechanization.

      Tell me about it.

You've got to say it's better than a skull. I really can't think of anything worse as a symbol than a skull.

Alex Vindman, who testified against Trump during his first impeachment, enters Florida Senate race

This is a promising development. Alex Vindman's integrity, clarity, intelligence, policy knowledge, and courage shone out during his Congressional testimony in the hearings for Trump's first impeachment. He's vastly better than the usual run of candidates for Congress from Florida, a genuine public servant.

Ilhan Omar sprayed with liquid at Minneapolis town hall - POLITICO

As of posting there's no clarity on what the "foul smelling liquid" was (as described in other articles.) Representative Omar continued her town hall and stated she doesn't give in to threats. Tbh if she gets hurt it's on the administration too for their rhetoric.

She is possibly the other reason for the targeted harassment of Minneapolis.

Facial recognition is just one technology tool that ICE has deployed in Minneapolis, where thousands of agents are conducting a crackdown. The technologies are being used not only to identify undocumented immigrants but also to track citizens who have protested ICE’s presence, said three current and former officials of the Department of Homeland Security who were not authorized to discuss confidential matters.

ICE is using two facial recognition programs in Minnesota, they said, including one made by the tech company Clearview AI and a newer program, Mobile Fortify. The agency is also using cellphone and social media tools to monitor people’s online activity and potentially hack into phones. And agents are tapping into a database, built by the data analytics company Palantir, that combines government and commercial data to identify real-time locations for individuals they are pursuing, the current and former officials said.

“The technologies are being deployed, or appear to be deployed, in a much more aggressive way than we have seen in the past,” said Nathan Freed Wessler, a lawyer at the American Civil Liberties Union, which has sued the Homeland Security Department over the immigration operation in Minneapolis. “The conglomeration of all these technologies together is giving the government unprecedented abilities.”

I mentioned something similar in last week's thread, but Ken Klippenstein has been reporting on this as well. Here's his most recent piece on the topic, which has some additional information. It's also worth keeping in mind as some lawmakers are calling for body cameras on all ICE and CBP officers.

On a completely unrelated note, COVID hasn't fully gone away, so if you find yourself out in a crowded space or large gathering, you might want to mask up to protect yourself and others around you.

Accountability for ICE and CBP …

    Accountability for ICE and CBP

Criminality is so rampant inside CBP that it has seen one of its own agents or officers arrested every 24 to 36 hours since 2005. CBP’s misconduct scandal is so long-running that today it would be old enough to drink.

Indeed, for much of the 2010s and likely before and since, it appears the crime rate of CBP agents and offices was higher PER CAPITA than the crime rate of undocumented immigrants in the United States.

Dr. Pape talked too about how much we should be troubled that DHS and the White House have reframed immigration enforcement as a moral struggle and not what it’s supposed to be — administrative law. We are being told we are in a war for the soul of our country. I think that’s true, unfortunately, but that what we’re seeing is that the American people have joined that battle on the right side against these government forces.
