Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix 2024 - Results
Quite an exciting weekend. Drivers having problems keeping it on track during FPs, Albon's crash and Logan's sacrifice, a pretty good Quali, and then Max's shocking DNF in the early laps of the race.
But if I'm being honest, the rest of the race wasn't that exciting. What does that say about current state of F1?
Anyway, moral of the the weekend: get your appendix removed; you'll become a Smooth Operator.

The tires are a big issue, I think. They're so sensitive to temperature and fragile in general.
The huge cars are a problem too. Smaller cars would be a lot more agile and give the drivers more room to get creative and show off wheel-to-wheel skills
Tires waste and pollution are a problem in F1 that I don't hear much talk about. Supposedly they are trying to be more "green" by having hybrids and arranging the calendar a certain way. But tires are just a big consumable polluting item that they use way too much of. It is very wasteful to make soft tires that only last a few laps and then have to be thrown out (or maybe used as fuel in a cement factory as mentioned in the article I linked). Even if they were recyclable, the soft tires are leaving the maximum possible amount of little particles and pollution during races.
Yes I know that there's no way that F1 is really good for the environment, but the tires are just ridiculous.

You say they are big, but honestly, they are huge compared to even 20 years ago. This image shows a striking comparison:

Obviously part of the increase can be attributed to safety features and the hybrid drivetrain, but I don't think that's the whole story. Engines are so much smaller compared to the V12 and V10 eras, so that saves some space, and many safety improvements like the halo don't require additional length compared to the 2010s.
I honestly think we could go back to the 2000 length + 1990 width cars with modern safety features and drivetrains, and get an instant win for raceability. Just compare footage from Monaco's Rascasse in the 90s and today, it's ridiculous.
I'm a complete layman, newcomer, casual race enjoyer, though I know some names to watch for. This was the first F1 race I've seen from start to finish in a long time and I'm glad I caught it. I'm going to try to watch more races from now on and keep up with more than just the occasional mention of the big names. Thank you to everyone here who has shared some opinions, insight, or just general knowledge for us newcomers to learn from.
hell of a race to start on :) this is my third season and i’m obsessed.
Really happy to see Carlos have a dominant win like this. If Perez's pace is anything to go by (I'm assuming max would have been quite a bit faster), a head to head battle with Max would have been really interesting to watch.
Sainz is really proving his value as one of the best on the grid. His reputation took a bit of a hit as he struggled with the new regulations for the first half of 2022, but since then, he has been on fire.
I really think Red Bull should be looking to put him alongside Verstappen. If Max decides to leave, Carlos would be a great team leader. Even if Max stays, he'd be quite a fantastic second driver - probably grabbing a few wins here and there but never putting too much pressure on Max.
Just before the race started I was in GTA online and just before I left, I sent 'welp, here's hoping for a Sainz P1' and left... I am over the moon!
I like Max, but it was so nice to not have him way off in the lead like always. I really like Sainz. I think he'll have his pick of the open seats next year. I'd love to see him get into a Red Bull.
Also, Albon just outside of the points. It was a gamble that unfortunately didn't pay off. Though I suppose one could argue that Albon got closer than Sargeant might've?
I've spent too much time on reddit. I'm trained to never say anything with any absolution. Because there may be people (see? right there "may be people") who will be like "Well askshaully you don't know that; Sargeant could've been P1!" No matter how improbable that is lol.
The one time I decide "okay, i'm really tired, i'll just watch the replay tomorrow at 9am..." I wake up to my friend + twitter + f1 app + f1 insta blowing up with "FERRARI 1-2!" "MAX DNF!"
I'm never sleeping again
plus that alonso penalty... sucks to be a fan of his right now.
I mostly enjoyed the race today, but I wish that the actual racing was more exciting. Yes we had a different race winner (go Sainz!), but there wasn't much on track action. Had it not not been for a massive mechanical failure, another botched pit stop, and a wreck that basically ended the race 2 laps early, there was not much to watch. I would have loved to see more battles for position and defending, but the times cars got past it seemed like the person in front was just allowing it to happen.
Also, I wonder how Vasseur is feeling about his decision to sign Hamilton instead of Sainz after today?
