I'm going to try and go a week without Reddit.
I almost deleted my account last week, but the form to delete your account has you contact them for feedback before doing so. So I wrote a brief letter to them on why I'd like to leave Reddit, and gave a (I'm sure laughable) ultimatum that essentially said unless they show any sort of leadership/initiative on their site's toxicity problem, I'm going to leave.
Anywho, I've got my Firefox setup to lock me out of it, I deleted the app from my phone. I just want to see if I can do it, because I'm sick of the fact that every major web platform out there seems to be run by people without a conscience, and there's no excuse to not try other platforms when they're really just a click away.
Aside from that, not much else out of the ordinary.
I had this problem with reddit where I'd dive into my country's sub and politics, and end up deleting the account b/c I spent too much time debating stupid stuff. So this last time I got me an...
I had this problem with reddit where I'd dive into my country's sub and politics, and end up deleting the account b/c I spent too much time debating stupid stuff. So this last time I got me an account with my real name, and that solved that issue: because I'd never ever want my real name in such silly time sink unproductive discussions, I never get into them, and use reddit very infrequently, mostly to post a thing or two in /r/emacs or /r/languagelearning. I find that the more anonymous my accounts are, the more I procrastinate using them, so I stopped using anonymous accounts.
That's a great idea. I don't think it would work for me on account my real name is about as common as John Smith, even with the middle name included. I recall when I opened my bank account as a...

Once you break the habit, that might be a good middle ground so you still get the content you want. You can even use feed43.com to rebuild the feed so you only get the source link, and not the link to reddit.

Elizabeth Becker - When The War Was Over: Cambodia And The Khmer Rouge Revolution
just gonna highlight a passage from this book which really gets at the khmer rouge zeitgeist:
[Comrade] Duch oversaw a precise department of death. His guards dutifully photographed the prisoners upon arrival and photographed them at or near death, whether their throats were slit, their bodies otherwise mutilated, or so thin from torture and near starvation that they were beyond recognition. The photographs were part of the files to prove the enemies of the state had been killed. Duch even set aside specific days for killing various types of prisoners: one day the wives of “enemies”; another day the children; a different day, factory workers.
also i have a ralph nader reader for some reason and i don't want to read something more dense like any of the other books on here so i'll probably go through some of that today and tomorrow
(please by the way feel free to ask what the fuck ralph nader could possibly have written or said worth preserving in a reader, because i'll answer that question as i go through this.)

I've neglected it for the past 2.5 months now, leaving me with 12 days to put together the 25ish pages I'm missing. Somehow I've just lost all my enthusiasm for the thing, and just want the final exams over with so I can get my degree and move on.

I have the urge to do something physical and methodical . I hope to spend this week gluing up and fretting the neck of a little guitar I’m building. It’s my first time making one from scratch but I’m happy how it’s looking so far. Still debating how best to arrange/brace the sound hole.

My goal for the week is to get their Overview more or less finished out.
At work? Meh, waiting on hold for <insert giant corporation> to forward my call to another person who can't help me with my issue, until they eventually go far back enough in the chain to get to the one guy (who refused to let me work with him directly) who can actually fix the problem.

Studying for the Cisco NPDESI exam to renew my Cisco certs. Pretty neat info if you're new to using NETCONF/RESTCONF to programmatically control network infrastructure. Hoping to finish the coursework this week.
At work I'm playing with a combination of Intel NUCs and these Chineesium HDMI capture boards LKV373A to cheaply get DirecTV channels on a bunch of smartboards. Just got some SOIC clips and will probably play with changing the firmware this week if I can get it figured out.
Listening to an audio book called "Sexual Intelligence: What We Really Want". Short listen with a lot of somewhat obvious info but I'm finding a lot of good nuggets regardless. Good for the motorcycle ride to/from the office.
For fun I'm taking a Spanish Rope class tonight (think aerial silks like what you see in circus stuff). I'm a few years in and just finally feeling like I can pull off some decent moves in the air. Such a fun community of people and a great way to work on the abs. Will also be taking a few sculpt/barre classes at the local hot yoga studio throughout the week. These two activities have been life changing for me and really helped get me in decent shape.

Aside from the usual life things and a rather lengthy to-do list, my main task this week is to keep chipping away at The Witness. I believe I'm sufficiently far into the game that nearly all of the low-hanging fruit puzzles1 are solved and I'm on to ones that require significant thought. That said, it's hard to know how far along I am, so I may be overestimating my progress.
In my first few hours with the game I kept a relatively quick pace and loved wandering around and exploring. Now I'm at the point where pretty much all of my gameplay happens on IRL graph paper while my character stands idle, staring at a grid for extended periods of time. I also tend to play it with a more punctuated rhythm than most games, as leaving and coming back to it with a fresh mind tends to get me unstuck.
I've been able to progress in the game without seeking external help thus far, but there's a chance this coming week that I'll seek out some hints for some that have flat out stumped me.
1: This was not an intentional pun, but I actually am done with those.
EDIT: Hoooooly shit. I was playing, stumbled into the realization of something very important, and just got chills as a result. Turns out there's a lot more to the game than I initially thought. I'm absolutely floored right now.

The usual: try to get some better quality sleep, try to keep up with Anki-Duolingo-calculus review-assorted programming challenges - I did the former this morning, but was too busy/distracted in the afternoon for the latter - read, and work some more on my remind-bot project.
It's a little Telegram bot which I am building in Racket, and it's coming along pretty nicely. The code is not good enough for a general-purpose library, but it has been chugging along this whole night - not that it has a lot to do right now. I just set it up to ping me every hour, so I won't lose track of time (the clock in the corner is not very helpful), and plugged in some more generic "remind me of this later" functionality today.
Later on, I plan to add some sort of "news digest" functionality - maybe with another script in cron grabbing a bunch of feeds every morning, with the bot sending me the top 10.
We're going to see our friends get married then extending it into a week-long vacation. First time off longer than a day or two since Christmas - super excited to hang out with old friends.

This week I feel super into BREWING.
I guess I already knew about the concept of fruit wines/floral wines, but I didn't know anything about the actual mechanisms of making them - but then while looking for things to do with my rhubarb other than pies, a few people mentioned they usually make a few small batches of farmer wine with their extras. So I started looking into that, then did that, and then I saw a mention of lilac wine somewhere, and it's lilac season so I wanted to do that, and now I want to make small batches of all the things.
But through all this, I somehow still am putting off bottling my kombucha, which has probably been ready for 3 days.

There is a major structural issue with the house which requires the demolition of a masonry wall. So I’m trying to learn about masonry construction which I’m totally unfamiliar with. It is really hard to find high quality professional services (structural engineer please!) out in the country, so I’m taking lots of photos and trying to get advice from contacts in the USA. But at some point, I hope to decide that the wall in question is not supporting the trusses above, and I can replace it with a lighter lumber/drywall wall.
Life being crazy, I also have a full-size tractor now. There are some hydraulic issues with the flail accessory and I will be learning all about that.
A neighbor came by earlier today and wants to house 6 workers at my place while he renovates. I have near zero income right now, so it’s tempting... but 6 dudes in my house sounds like a nightmare.

Thanks. I find the same, if there's extra hoops it reminds me why I'm not going to it which is often enough to avoid it.
Personally, I've considered it, but I just decided to block more "unproductive" subreddits and leave the "productive" subreddits.

Try and get my life a bit sorted out for it's a mess right now. Getting a schedule, cleaning, getting proper sleep and food, that sort of thing. It's always been difficult but it gets slightly better every time.
Pretty much just finish some programs at work and playing rimworld all day, every day after work.
Oh, and not living up to my name.
This sounds suspiciously like what I'd like to be doing with my life.
Are you future me?
Past and present you. You are future me though.

Yes, exactly.
Cool. I want to learn that some day, seems a fun hobby. Do you have any good starting material by chance?
