Who's on the fediverse?

There was a thread about this coincidentally exactly one year ago, give or take three hours. Ah, to be back in January 2020

I've been poking around on the fediverse again and I figured I'll never start using it unless I'm following some people. So, who here is on it? Please share some other people you follow, if you like.

I made an account a while back, and it was on the default instance since I didn't know any others to choose. I feel like it's a deliberate choice though (if nothing else it will give me a more curated timeline to scroll through) so I'd like to be deliberate about it at some point.

Well, it looks like I know at least two people on cybre.space already. Maybe you have an invite for that instance?

Personally, I'd suggest joining an instance which fits your personal philosophy or has a community you'd like to be part of.

This seems like a really cool community, so I wound up supporting it on Patreon this morning at like $1 a month, but I can't find any information about gaining access. Do you have any advice?

Does fediverse just refer to Mastodon instances? Or is it just that Mastodon is the biggest player in the scene?

Fediverse typically refers to all federated social network softwares such as Mastodon, Pleroma, Misskey, Friendica etc but Mastodon is probably the most popular variety.

I like that! It definitely is, I started out on Mastodon and I've since started experimenting with self hosting Pleroma and thought about rolling my own diy activitypub site.

I am at @admicos@mastodon.social. Tried hosting my own Mastodon (and Pleroma before that) instance for a while, but I ended up back where I started because they (especially Mastodon) are pretty darn annoying to host.

For anyone interested, I mainly just complain about (tech) stuff, and don't really do the "being fun" thing.

I also agree on the advice of trying to find an instance related to your interests. I jumped on mastodon.social mostly because I didn't really know anywhere else (and my account was completely unused for a couple months or so, before being reminded of it here), and now that I know mostly how it works, I kinda wish I looked for an interesting instance beforehand. (I am too lazy to do an instance switch for a 3rd time, see first paragraph)

I am: @whom@weirder.earth! I'm interested in and post about anime, poetry, games, film, queer shit, and whatever else I wander into. I try to treat it a little less like social media and more like what "microblogging" sounds like it would mean, so I keep away from social media trends and drama.

I'd agree with tindall's suggestion to pick based on principles and the general vibe of an instance. Sharing interests is good, but sharing a philosophy is essential to enjoying your time on the fediverse. If you match up with the goals of your instance, the mods are essentially filtering and curating your experience just how you like it :)

I was, but the Mastodon instance I was on shut down. I wasn’t using it enough to feel like I need to jump in again.

I'm also at a Pleroma instance, specifically you can find me @bendersteeed@pleroma.soykaf.com. I'm not really big on it though, just posting random stuff and jacking into random discussions.

Thanks a lot, glad you liked it. It's a bit of work in progress, but I haven't found time lately to hack on it. I followed you in the fediverse, considering you are your-user-name@mastodon.social!

If the remote follow button doesn't work, you can search the user's handle (@bendersteeed@pleroma.soykaf.com) from your local instance and you should be able to follow them from there.

For those on the Fediverse, how did you populate your "feed" with an initial layer of content? When I last tried it out I didn't quite know what to do - I can't follow the famous people people I respect from Twitter, no?

Having to define myself behind an instance right off the bat also felt like a big barrier to entry for me, and I found myself wanting for more small, general-purpose instances. Maybe microblogging's just not my thing.

I joined an instance of a friend I met through twitter, so finding the home was the easy part. Then over time I just dropped into the local and federated feeds and found people saying things that were interesting or funny. It took a couple of months to build up enough people that I don't feel super bored with what's presented. One thing that helped was being super choosy about the people I see boosts from. Most are turned off the second I see a couple in a row from someone because I'd prefer to interact with someone on their thoughts than on someone else's. It also means I'm picky about what I boost myself.

Check out https://communitywiki.org/trunk. You can also check your local timeline if you didn't join a general-purpose instance. You might also want to check out the federated timeline, though that will have a lot of noise to sort through. There is also a "profile directory" on some servers, which might be useful if it's enabled.
