One potential positive outcome of this episode is that my blog got a bunch of traffic from this very post on Tildes. At the time, I didn't know what tildes.net was in the referrer field of the server logs and looked into it, and as a result I discovered Tildes, and well, here I am. So not only did I gain a button machine and a whole new hobby, but maybe a nicer alternative to reddit, too. (Yes, I'm the author of the linked post.)

p.s. Speaking of Advent of Code, Tildes actually has a group dedicated to it, so feel free to join in if you want to:

It's a nice community. I hope you enjoy your time here. Self-promotion is okay as long as it's not the main focus of your account. We have some good docs for explaining the ethos of this place....

We have some good docs for explaining the ethos of this place. Also check out the theme switcher in your Settings. Many find the default white to be blinding, but there's some nice alternatives (I like Atom One Dark).

Yeah, I read a bunch of things about the ethos of the site and it really felt like a breath of fresh air. Pretty much everything I do, from the PCG random number generator to my other academic work to the things I do for fun is shared with folks in the hope that they be glad to discover it, maybe learn something. Hopefully saying something like “hey look, Advent of Code, running on a ZX Spectrum!” isn't self promotion, it's just a moment of “whoa!” (and yeah, those were the bulk of the posts reddit destroyed with their nonsense).

And of course, the vast majority of my time is commenting on something cool someone else did or is telling us about.

There are a lot of people on Tildes who prefer to remain anonymous, but if you want people to know something about you or link to something you made, there is a bio that appears in the sidebar after clicking on someone's username. The form to edit it is here.

Welcome! I definitely remember enjoying your posts over on /r/adventofcode and was thinking I'd miss those on reading this, so it's good to see you might have a new home here.

Personally, I find Tildes a very cozy place compared to the larger Reddit (though /r/adventofcode is pretty friendly, IMO). And as @cfabbro mentioned, there are usually some daily AoC threads here even if they are much smaller than over there.

I'd violated their rules, should read them more closely, and that their decision was final

Hey, welcome and glad to have you, fellow human.

Thanks for sharing Ranma fanfic. Takahashi sensei was ahead of the curve at the time of the manga's creation, of course, but some 30+ years on, the story beats she pioneered are more comfortable predictable watches. Still, I found myself enjoying the anime. I usually dont read any fanfic without tags, but maybe I'll take a leap of faith in this one.

Getting back on topic of being classified as a bot: pretty ironic since most "am I the bad guy" type posts are now clearly written by bots. It's a bad combo of using automated tools coupled with having no humans being able to evaluate individual cases .

Reddit's loss is hopefully our gain. Tell your friends :3

I had a similar issue a while back. My account was idle since the API debacle but I went to the mead subreddit to ask a question about my gravity readings because they didn't make sense around the beginning of 2025. I got immediately banned when I posted by the automatic system, and then I went and took my question to the discord instead and decided that the one venture back was not worth the effort.
