What is the size of your smartphone?

This thread might seem weird, but I am considering buying a new smartphone and I have my eyes on the Moto g7 power (for its awesome battery!). Sadly, it is 6.2"! My current phone is 4.7". I have small hands, 6.2" seems way too big.

If anyone has a 6.2" phone, how do you feel about it? Does it even fit in your pants?

...and I hate having a large phone. I had an iPhone SE up until recently, which I thought was the perfect size.

Weighing all my options, I ended up upgrading to the Galaxy Note (6.5"). It's way too big, in my opinion, but the other features make up for it. And believe me, I love having a large screen, I just dislike having a large phone. And at least where tech is at right now, you can't have one without the other.

So yeah, it fits in my pocket, and I really like the phone. It's much more stable than my iPhone was, has better battery life, and an incredible camera. I do a lot of surveying for work, so I've found the stylus to be incredibly useful. I can take a picture, then immediately draw measurements on it. Previously, I had to hand-sketch everything in a notebook before writing down measurements.

I gotta say, the difference is worthwhile. It's not ideal, but it's a damn good phone. My motherboard on my PC just failed on me, and I have been able to get by with just my phone for a month or two now. I don't think I could have pulled that off with my iPhone.

I had an iPhone 5s for the longest time, which has the same form factor. I too, thought it was the perfect size. I held out for a long time before upgrading. I now have an iPhone X, which, while not necessarily too big, I sometimes struggle to reach the entire screen with one hand; and I have larger than average hands. All in all, I’m happy with it, but the bulk in the pocket -especially with a case- is a bit more than I’d like. I wish they would release a new premium iPhone with that old 5/SE form factor.

So much this. Same exact dimensions, edge to edge screen. Come on, Apple! In the meantime, my SE appears to be headed for its second battery replacement.

In the past few years I've gone from 4.7” to 5.5", to 6.2" however the actual size of the phone has barely increased, and mostly in the vertical range, because the bezel has shrunk on newer phones and the 6.2" includes the notch area, so it's more like 6” of screen area with aditional space for notifications. I don't think I would want to go much bigger than what I have now though.

Do you find your current phone (6.2") too big? Would you prefer if it was smaller?

Putting my old phone up to my new phone, the new phone is only about .25” taller and almost exactly the same width, so it feels pretty natural to use.

Pixel 3 XL, 6.3" screen (158 mm x 76.7 mm), with a weird 18.5:9 aspect ratio that actually makes it almost comfortable to use one-handed for static activities like reading. Female, with somewhat larger-than-average handspan.

The Pixel was a compromise on getting a good smartphone+camera+e-reader (still stupid expensive, but I'll keep using it for as long as I can replace OS and battery). I eventually picked up a Huawei MediaPad M5 for comfort in extended reading.

For nearly every other activity, the Pixel 3 XL is a two-handed or voice-controlled device.

I downgraded my phone size preference during my last upgrade cycle, migrating from a iPhone 7 Plus to an iPhone XS. The reduction in screen real-estate isn't all that great because iPhone XS obviously has thinner bezels; but the portability and usability is greatly improved for me. I can now bend over to tie my shoelaces without feeling like my phone is going to snap in half in my pocket!

Oh, I feel your pain. I hate huge phones. I'm not a big person and I don't have big pockets, but as my phone is my secondary computing device not primary, I just want it to be small anyway. I currently have a Samsung Galaxy A3 which is perfect for me. 4.7" screen, waterproof, great battery life, decent camera. Unfortunately they've stopped doing a "small, nice phone" range, as have most manufacturers. Sony used to do their "Compact" range but even if they still are, the quality has gone completely to shit and I won't buy one of their handsets again.

I think my next phone might be a Pixel 3a, but even that's quite big. 15mm bigger than the A3, although they do manage to squeeze a 5.6" screen into the extra space.

My wife has a Motorola G6 and tbh I haven't been too impressed with it. It's a bit bendy and their android overlay is a bit ugly and it's just overall not all that nice a thing. It was cheap though, and that goes quite a long way to make up for it's other failings. Especially given the rate at which she destroys phones.

I have a Moto G5+, and it has a 5.2 inch screen. I have bigger than average hands, but my opinion is extremely similar to the_walrus's in that I hate having a large phone. Even though 5.2 isn't really that big compared to stuff like the 6.5 inch screen, I used to have a Moto X 1st gen, and I think that that had the most ideal phone screen size out of all the phones I've ever had (which, coincidentally, was also a 4.7 inch screen). I think I liked it because I could consistently reach the whole screen with only one hand, without having to do some odd phone balancing techniques with my hand. I'm otherwise happy with my current phone, so I'm not actively looking for new phones yet, but when it starts getting too slow, or obsolete, it's hard to say if I'll just get a big phone anyway, and see if I'm just wrong, or try to find something closer to the size of the moto X I had.

Now that I've gotten used to the larger display, I don't want to go smaller; but at the same time, it's quite a large phone, almost uncomfortably so.

I have an ancient Samsung Epic 4G, an original Galaxy S model. The screen size is 4 (as in 4.0) inches, and I find it to be the perfect size - large enough to be comfortable using, small enough to easily fit in my pocket. It's rather chunky because of the slideout keyboard, but I love the form factor, and it bums me out how hard it is to find modern phones in this size, I have a tablet for when I want a bigger screen and I don't want anything bigger than 4 inches. I'll probably get a Galaxy S5 Mini when I'm forced to upgrade, that seems to be the closest semi-modern equivalent to it (iPhone SE isn't an option because it doesn't support Android), but it's still 4.5...

I have an iPhone 6s Plus which does feel like a huge phone, but I could never go back to a smaller screen.

But one thing you might take into consideration is the actual dimensions of the phone, not just the screen. The screen/body area ratio really varies. On my old 6s Plus, it is only 67.7% screen-to-body ratio.
So it use a 5.5" screen, but the phone is pretty big:
    158.2 x 77.9 x 7.3 mm (6.23 x 3.07 x 0.29 in)

    The Motorola G7 Power is 6.2 inches, 94.0 cm2 (~77.6% screen-to-body ratio) with a body:
    159.4 x 76 x 9.3 mm (6.28 x 2.99 x 0.37 in)

Samsung J3 right now, after my LG G4 burned out. The LG was large enough to annoy me. The J3 seems like the perfect size.

I'm done giving a damn about smartphones. I want the cheapest most durable comfy-pocket sized device. I will use it for five years before I even think about an upgrade. If it gets warm when I'm using it, then it's burnout garbage and I'm done with that manufacturer. Putting extra money into fancier models seems like a total waste to me. It's a pocket computer, it will always be shit, that's the nature of those devices, and I vastly prefer a desktop. When I've got a matching pair of augmented reality glasses for my phone, perhaps then I'll start to give a damn about it's capabilities.

What I really want is one based on fully open hardware/software - for that I'd even spend a little extra.

I am so not looking forward to having to replace it when it dies, I love how small it is and how solid it's battery life is. I just don't need anything from a bigger and/or more powerful phone, I just use the web browser, message and call with my phone and that's it. The only thing I wouldn't mind is a better camera, because the one my phone has feels like really shitty to what phones these days can do.

I just don't get why anyone needs a large screen on their phone. This screen size feels perfect to me.

I have medium-size hands, and I don't find it very comfortable to use with one hand. Sticking a little phone strap on the back has helped tremendously though, and I can use it one-handed with that.

Having a bigger screen has grown on me despite having some downsides, and I don't regret getting a bigger phone than I set out to.

I HATE large phones like a few others. I also love having a belt clip (otterbox for the win), so for me the 4s/5s/SE size is perfect.

I also don't use my phone for much. Actual calls, some texting, old AlienBlue app for Reddit, some web browsing, email (default mail client), google maps, music, audiobooks and a few other apps.

To me, being able to keep it on my hip is very important. I hate things in my pockets.

My second-last phone was a Moto X Style. It supposedly had a 5.7" screen (why are they never expressed in normal measurement units?). It was the largest phone I've ever owned, and I never really got used to its size. It was always a bit too big for me. It never quite fit comfortably in my hand or my pocket. I always had to use it two-handed, which made it feel like a small tablet rather than a phone.

So one of the things I looked for in my current phone was a smaller size. Of course, I might have gone a bit too far, with a phone that has only a 3.2" screen - but I bought it for other reasons, and the screen isn't too small to do what I need. The overall phone size is very convenient for holding and for slipping into pockets. I've even come close to losing it once or twice because it doesn't bulge or weigh down a pocket: I've literally had moments where I didn't know where my phone was, even though it was in the back pocket of my jeans. I like that about it. A phone should be small and convenient and very portable. If I want a big screen, I'll use a tablet.
