Youtube is easy, get an RSS feed of your subscribtions, use mpv + youtube-dl to stream the links. On iPhone it's harder, but on Android you could use NewPipe, which basically does the same thing.

If i were to make that switch, I'd also enjoy the lack of content force-feeding by the algo. I clicked on a scene from Sillicon Valley last week and am still getting "Best of Jared S1-5" kind of...

I clicked on a scene from Sillicon Valley last week and am still getting "Best of Jared S1-5" kind of videos. Yeah, I can hit "not interested" but how many times has that actually worked for you? I just get "best of Richard" or the next suggestion from the algo.
I really miss the days of related videos as opposed to suggested videos, and bc there's probably not a way to bring back the old ways - cutting out the sidebar/homepage/algo as much as possible just sounds like a no-brainer.
Once you've found some channels, being able to enjoy it in peace sounds nice.

I know that's not typical though. Sometimes I forget that people let the recommendation engine take them on a journey. I guess I see Youtube more as a means to an end than an entertainment platform.
Same here on not clicking any videos when I'm done. I don't have an account so I have to manually turn off autoplay every time I go to the site, though.

I see your point, but I think it's good enough, no algorithm, stripped down analytics, no ads No more mindlessly browsing suggested videos, no giving cookies to Google, just raw entertainment...

Here's an extension which automatically redirects youtube links to it (as well as twitter links to nitter, which is the same kind of thing). You can configure what instance it redirects to, as well.

Vimeo has had issues for SFDebris, who uses a ton of bandwidth on their service and they just priced him out. So, I guess it's fine if you're not too successful.

Is that really getting rid of YouTube, though? That's more like using it through a different client.

If that is the concern, why not just block the analytics? I'm pretty sure uBlock Origin blocks google-analytics.com by default.

It's a decent solution in my view.
I use https://invidio.us on desktop and mobile. It's open source. Unfortunately it goes down a lot.

There are alternative public instances which usually work when the main one is blocked by Google.
Vimeo? Haven't used them lately but I saw some nice videos there.
My spouse has used Vimeo and it has worked just fine for her.

I used to think LBRY was cool until I saw this post on their official blog. Kind of turned me off.
Wow. That's awful. I only really know it from EEVBlog mentioning it but if that's the kind of stuff their highlighting, I'm not interested.
