I think a "friends" thing would be good here.

You know, so we can all keep track of the people we most like to interact with.

This is the first step on the road to social media, which was the downfall of reddit.

reddit had a friend option for ages that did nothing but show you content from the people you had "friended" (basically just a subscription button) on a page. it was never developed into anything more than that afaik. I'm not sure how many people even used it - i know one IRC friend of mine used it aggressively, but i don't think i ever even heard people mention using it on the site itself.

More recently, Reddit changed the default user profile, which partly involved adding a "follow" feature. Following another user will include posts from that user in your front page, alongside posts from the subreddits you've subscribed to. If you wanted to, you could build a front page filled only with posts from people you've followed. Sound familiar? ;)

I used to use it to keep up with posts of some high quality novelty accounts, like poem_for_your_sprog. It's great for that since it's a one way 'friendship' and so the focus is still on the content. It should've been called 'subscribe', really. In the redesign they've made it quite similar to twitter. People can post on their own profiles and users can follow their feed and the admins are pushing it a lot more.

On tildes, a subscribe feature like the old one on reddit might not necessarily be a bad idea.

I actually quite liked the friend functionality. It didn't do a lot in terms of what I did with the site, it was just nice every now and then to realize "Oh hey, I know them". Brought a touch of personality to what's usually a fairly anonymous experience, I guess.

Not many people know this, but the fall of the Roman Empire was also caused by social media.

You risk having social groups forming. We already have ~groups, no need to have more groups inside of them.

Please no, this is one of the reasons people are leaving reddit. This is not what this platform is supposed to be about.

I'd just like username flair/tagging. It's similar, but has the important difference of actually being useful in reminding me stuff about that person. Eg if they're a wealth of information on a certain topic I can tag them as that, and ask them questions. I can tag people who I know have similar interests, or tag them as an admin/mod, or a reminder like "Send them code for x when I've finished it".

This would be a good alternative that wouldn't feel too social media-y. If there were a way to list all of your tagged users then you could tag people as friends and get a listing of their user pages.

I love the username tag feature on Reddit, I use it all the time to combat my horrible memory.

I don't want a friends system, I think it's a bit of a fringe use case that would add bloat and not be used by a lot of the people - though I think the ability to add notes to people's usernames might be nice, like being able to put 'active in ~games' beside someone you see often might serve a similar purpose and be used for more things.

While I see where you're coming from I can't think of a use-case where I would want to keep track of people outside of the activity within the community.

I've spent a lot of time in r/books and though never really used it, I thought the private messaging feature was useful enough to cement person to person contacts if such were desired.
