[SOLVED] Why is mobile Safari (iOS) slow with Tildes?
Tildes links take about a minute to open on iOS Safari. Firefox Focus by comparison (again, iOS) has no issues.
I've tried clearing the cache/data for Tildes in the Safari settings. It may have helped initially but the problem persists.
Tildes uses the most strict content security policy you will ever find on a social media site - or almost any site, for that matter. One of the side effects of this ironclad CSP is that many browser addons that meddle with the site itself (change scripts, add buttons, apply themes etc) just plain fail to function on Tildes. The security policy hamstrings their functionality.
I'd bet that's what's happening to you, so the question is which addon is it and what is it doing that Tildes breaks? Hopefully nothing nefarious. The long delay sounds like some form of timeout to me, which could indicate the addon is communicating with other websites. That communication gets broken on Tildes pages and the addon doesn't know what to do about it other than wait and eventually time out.
Yes, disabling the extensions solved it. I'm running (but had completely forgotten) the following: Ad Guard, super agent, Noir, Mutable, Firefox Focus. I don't need them here, except Mutable which I use everywhere. Seems to be okay now. Thanks for the helpful info!
Do you have any extensions? I have found that Dark Reader on Firefox can get weird with Tildes on phones.
That being said, we have theme choices so I have long since excluded this site.
Definitely worth a look. I've had extensions cause memory leaks with some sites in the past.
Thís was the issue. Thanks so much. I feel so silly for missing that, but I find the amount of menu items in Safari very cumbersome and difficult to use. Not really a design issue necessarily but a limitation of a small device. I appreciate it!
It shouldn't be. I use mobile Safari (iPhone 16, iOS 26.2.1) to browse Tildes, and it loads lightning fast for me. What phone model and iOS version are you on? Are you using an adblocker, custom DNS, or any extensions for Safari?
Thanks. I disabled extensions (which I completely forgot about!) and the site is smooth as silk again. Really appreciate it!
NP. I'm glad you got it sorted out. :)
p.s. I updated the title to include [SOLVED] and added the
solvedtag to the topic too. Thanks for updating the post to reflect the solved status. The title has been bothering me since it (unintentionally) didn't eliminate Tildes from the potential causes.
what do you use for your DNS? i might as well try 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8 for testing.
any extensions or whatever? i’m on ios 18x and tildes is as quick as always.
Thanks. I disabled extensions (which I completely forgot about!) and the site is smooth as silk again. Really appreciate it! Oddly enough, when I reenable the extensions, the site is still okay. But I'll leave them off. They're not really needed here bar Mutable, which I use everywhere.
weird. it happens, though. the little refresh did the trick.
For me, I just made a proper 'app' for the site using a mobileConfig -- check this -- you just airdrop it over, accept the cert, and you're good to go.
Does no one use Three Cheers? Ive been using it on ios 16ish for years and its been great
I've used the android version of Three Cheers for ages -- I think I switched fully when Three Cheers added support for DMs.
Has it been years already? It's my default method for Tildes.
I have the iOS version installed and have used it, but its UI design doesn’t quite click with me. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a quality app, but it’s not my cup of tea. I write mobile apps for a living and am probably more strongly opinionated than most on things of that nature, though.
Previously I had been using Surfboard which is more to my taste, but its TestFlight build expired and its author hasn’t posted since. I hope they’re doing ok.
So for now the web version “installed” as a PWA is what feels best for me.
Not a fan of apps in general personally.
I use it, although I use mobile Firefox just as much. The main feature it's missing for me is the search function, aside from that it's a wonderful app!
Big user of Three Cheers here on both iOS and Android. It's probably my favorite way to browse Tildes on the go.
No issues here. I use Tildes "saved" to the home screen as a standalone "app", which is really just a Safari tab with the toolbars hidden. iPhone 16 Pro Max, iOS 26.3.
Thanks. It turned out to be extensions, which I really should have tried before posting but somehow it never crossed my mind. It's been an issue for months now and I had assumed it was a site issue until I logged in via desktop a few times.
