The recall is done via over the air (OTA) update and doesn't require the car to be brought to service.

The automaker began issuing software updates on Tuesday following a lengthy investigation by National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Tesla on Tuesday recalled more than two million vehicles to update a function designed to ensure drivers are focused when using its Autopilot feature, according to safety officials.

The recall by Tesla, the worldโ€™s dominant maker of electric vehicles, was its fourth in less than two years. It covers nearly all models the company sells in the United States, including its most popular car, the Model Y sport utility vehicle.

The recall is done via over the air (OTA) update and doesn't require the car to be brought to service.

Interesting that it's still considered a recall...

The terminology and law has not kept up with the technology.

I had to bring my Nissan to the dealer and wait around for hours or pay for my transport on three separate occasions. None of those were news, and my Tesla recalls have been ota software updates. That Nissan still has a serious problem that I'm not going to fix because the car is no longer worth it -- partly because people that know how to buy cars know how to exploit this issue enough to cast doubt.

Meanwhile everytime a Tesla sneezes, the media is all over it. That phenomenon has a name: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Availability_heuristic (also related is base rate fallacy, but I've already ranted too much)

We all are fooled by it. Even if we know about it. You hear about terrorists or random violence or EVs catching fire or plane crashes. Those harm or kill so few people, statistically.

You don't ever hear about someone (non famous) dying of cardiovascular disease or suicide or cancer or non EV car accidents, so we all don't ever think about them as the dangerous they really are.

It is interesting. It happened long before Musk went full Nazi too so that can't even be used to explain it. Tesla is far from perfect, but the hate for it or EVs is always fascinating to observe.

It has a continuously variable transmission. So seemingly no gears. It was actually really nice when it was new. The problem is that the problems are well known. If I spend the money to replace...

The problem is that the problems are well known. If I spend the money to replace the transmission, I won't get that back.

The thing is you already can't take a nap or watch a movie using autopilot (without extraordinary measures to bypass existing restrictions). Right now I have to apply torque to the steering wheel to keep autopilot engaged. You can't watch media content on the tesla screen while it's driving. My guess is now it's going to be you have to apply torque to the steering wheel, have BOTH hands on the wheel (not the way most people drive a lot of the time) AND it will start tracking your eyes to be on the road. Two of those don't really bother me that much but I don't want to be forced to have both hands on the wheel at times I wouldn't normally. It also seems likely it may start disengaging when I'm at a traffic light (even if I'm behind a vehicle that is stopped, and possibly even if I set my speed to zero). All of this is overkill and I doubt it will decrease incident rate. My intuition is the vehicle constantly auto-disengaging will cause more accidents, not less. It looks like they will also suspend you from the ability to use autopilot if the system determines you "messed up" too many times - how they determine that, I don't know.

I have a mach e and it is only the eye tracking unless it is below some confidence threshold. It also has a torque sensor but one hand can do it if hands free is unavailable. I think it is a good way to go. You still have to look forward no matter what it is asking of your hands.

The original teslas driver being able to defeat the system with an orange was silly, tesla should have thought about what an idiot would try.
