China will ban hidden door handles on cars, commonly used on Tesla’s electric vehicles and many other EV models, starting next year.

All car doors must include a mechanical release function for handles, except for the tailgate, according to details released by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology on Monday.

Officials said the policy aims to address safety concerns after fatal EV accidents where electronic doors reportedly failed to operate and trapped passengers inside vehicles.

In what way? Many Chinese EVs also have the retractable door handles, because tesla is cool. I'm sure Tesla and whatnot are more than capable of adding... normal door hinges by 2029. That does not...

In what way? Many Chinese EVs also have the retractable door handles, because tesla is cool. I'm sure Tesla and whatnot are more than capable of adding... normal door hinges by 2029. That does not exactly seem like such an insurmountable requirement that they will be pushed out of the market.

Off the top of my head, I'm pretty sure at least BYD and SAIC's EVs have hidden door handles, and I wouldn't be surprised if other Chinese EV manufacturers have them as well.

I mean...is it? At the end of the day this has been stupid since day 1. I've no doubt China would be willing to do something like that, but it could be just as likely someone sensible just said...

I mean...is it? At the end of the day this has been stupid since day 1. I've no doubt China would be willing to do something like that, but it could be just as likely someone sensible just said 'this isn't really that safe' and they agreed, likely because it's not?

The US has set the market standard for safety on vehicles for the majority of their existence, mostly due to being such a huge % of the market (well % that cared about safety standards). If a market like China decides "actually yes the data suggests these things are bad" (looking at you touch screens), then it's perfectly reasonable for them to say they don't care what companies like to do, and regulate accordingly.
