A small part of me hasn't recovered from Mira Furlan especially, you know? But, I'm giving JMS my trust and I know even if it's not perfect it will be a hell of a ride.

I heard Mira voice a character in an audiobook recently - Max Brooks' Sasquatch novel I think - and it hit so hard. She was wonderful and Delenn clips are my go-tos when i need a B5 hit.

Medusa Cascade is another good one. B5 absolutely wrecked her every time.

We all miss that family. I'll be glad to see everyone who is still around again, though.

I'm not sure if I have a source or if this is hearsay, but when Bruce Boxleitner was shown the finished film, he cried because it was so good. I just remembered that.

If you watch babylon five, you will cry. It has always been so, and that's the best possible plug for this movie one could get.

Surely it is all of the rumbling in online forums that has finally awakened JMS from his slumber. Yes, this thing actually exists, and it's finished, and it's coming out this summer at comic-con. Welcome back to 1995 folks. It's animated, so we aren't locked into a space station by a budget that was charitably comparable to star trek's catering bill. JMS does not have to restrain himself this time. It must be christmas. :D

...sharing my immediate reaction as the credits roll: this is 100% a love letter to fandom of the original series and i loved it like a kid on christmas morning!..

...as a production, it's as well-made as amazon's vox machina, but so steeped in original-series lore (and winks) that i'm skeptical uninitiated audiences might be able appreciate the narrative...possibly a backdoor pilot for the reboot?..

...regardless, the new voice actors for characters whose original players have sadly passed on were very good!..it feels like it's cut from the same cloth as seasons two/three/four, very much a welcomed visit from warmly-missed old friends, replete with nineties-era screenwriting tropes...

...that said, television and audiences have changed tremendously over the past quarter century, but any trepidation i had of the stumbling end with which babylon 5 greeted the new millenium is fully ameliorated: this is good in the way that everything after season four deserved but seldom managed...

For me, it's peak Scifi. Never been topped, and probably never will be. And I love me some Star Trek, including DS9. I like B5 better than any Trek, or Stargate, or Farscape, or The Expanse, or BSG, or Doctor Who, and I have seen all of them and all of their spinoffs. I'll also plug it for having the finest series finale ever filmed, even better and more note perfect than Breaking Bad.

Click on that christmas reel in my other comment and see what kind of maniacs it took to make this thing.

Best sci-fi series ever IMO. Only downside was that it kept getting canned then recommisioned which meant the flow of the overall work was compromised. It had amazing overarching storylines.

That show was in 'every season is our last' mode the entire time.

Protip for any network out there that lands the upcoming reboot: Just order seven seasons and nine movies, hand Joe a nice fat check, and say get to work. Get him any two other writers he desires so that he doesn't have to write the whole damn thing himself this time. In fact get him Vince Gilligan, we know Vince is a massive B5 fan and Vince might be able to keep up with Joe - not many could. Then shut the fuck up, and get the fuck out of their way, and keep your hands and your inferior minds off of the project. Just sit back and let the money roll in.

Bezos could have everything he's ever wanted from that 'rings of power' trash for as little as five million per episode with JMS running a B5 reboot. It literally cannot miss if JMS is running it. If you want to redefine cinematic scifi forever just bump that to ten million. I can't even imagine what this series would be like without them having to deal with the chaos of being in constant cancel mode, or having to write for a 90s-era tv format (yuck).

Bonus points: B5 invented 'woke' and did it so well no one even noticed it was there. First scifi lesbian relationship and it would have had the first transgendered major supporting character back in 1994 if the studios hadn't balked at it. Wokeness will never be an issue with this series.

As someone whose favorite Trek show is DS9, they have a lot in common. It feels a lot like if DS9 more fully committed to all of the things that set it apart from TNG.

      Two general disclaimers:

      • Like every Trek show, the first season is a bit rough, though not as rough as e.g. TNG, and I don't think even as rough as DS9. It's a show that really knows what it wants to be from the start for the most part. It just takes its time with one-offs easing you into the world and characters before it really launches into the serialized series-long story, and it does have a small handful of meh episodes in the first season.
      • The CGI is rough. It started in 1994 and uses almost exclusively full 3D CGI rendering for all space scenes. You might recall that Voyager didn't do that until '97, and it still looked bad. Now consider that the 5 in Babylon-5 refers to its budget of $5. It's rough. It communicates what it needs to and it does get better in the second season but it never really gets easy on the eyes. <Edit> That being said, it undeniably has character, which is something I can't say for a lot of modern Trek or Trek-inspired sci-fi CGI space action scenes. The goofy poor-agedness of it is pretty charming IMO. </Edit>

But if you can accept this stuff (I have to imagine as a Trek fan you can because it's basically par for the course with Trek), you're really in for what is easily top one or two best sci-fi shows of all time. Like I said, it feels a lot like what you'd get if DS9 hadn't been chained to the Star Trek brand and could have gone for it and done what it clearly wanted to do.

Oh yeah, and if you start watching, AFAIK the general community recommendation is to just start with the first episode, rather than the pilot movies. They're not particularly necessary.

I watched most of the series for the first proper time last year (ignoring the smattering of reruns I caught back in the day), and if you want to suspend your disbelief a little, the CGI works a lot better on a CRT. It's what I ended up going for for most of my watch through.

Some things from the pilot do come up near the end of season five, because that's just how B5 rolls. I'd suggest people watch The Gathering, though as a pilot it is a lot rougher and some characters change dramatically by the first episode. That pilot is also the only episode in SD - the entire rest of the series was shot in widescreen format and that's how it should be watched.

Until reading the article I had no idea that Jerry Doyle ( Mr. Garibaldi ) died.

I really liked his character the first several seasons. After his time with the show the actor seemed to become similar to the character he played in later seasons after the character had his mind altered to become an angry conspiracy theorist.

I liked the character from the early seasons so much I still feel a bit sad that Jerry Doyle moved on.

So many of the original cast died!

I'll just note for other B5 fans who collect physical media in here, there's a full series blu-ray slated for release later this year on Dec. 5 that you can already pre-order at various vendors. I haven't been able to find too much about it (restoration process, whether it will be original aspect ratio or if they've redone effects for 16x9, stuff like that).
