Very "Measure of a Man," I'm sure this is prime, emotional stuff depending on how it lands, but lawyer breakdowns of court episodes of TV shows have completely ruined my suspension of realism, and the enormous conflict of interest and the decorum fails with the defense along with the third act asylum escape valve makes this episode a little hard to swallow. I think the better premise would have been if asylum was the counteroffer before this thing becomes a radioactive court case, then you have people who want to set precedent vs people who want this to go away, vs people who have an axe to grind, and you get a path to how Starfleet would punt the ball on genetic augmentation rights for centuries before someone actually does something about it. But I guess that wasn't the show they were trying to make.

I can’t help it, I’m a sucker for a Star Trek court room episode. I wasn’t expecting this one to tug at my heartstrings this much, especially since I found Una to be kind of a forgettable and underused character in season one. I also wasn’t expecting to see Pike sidelined for two episodes in a row. But despite all that this whole episode really worked for me. I thought the actress who played Neera was great, the climax was emotional enough to get a lump in my throat, and there were even a handful of light hearted moments that worked despite Trek’s usual allergy to comedy (thinking specifically of Spock’s “outburst”, which is a much better Spock joke than the “what’s your thing” joke from the premiere)

But still better than most other nutrek I’ve seen and we’re only in season 2. There’s promise yet for this show to get added to my list of “good” Trek shows.

I think I'm done with Star Trek. They can't seem to hit the same level that TNG and DS9 had. Hell, at this point I'd even take another Voyager (which I unironically enjoyed a lot).

Yeah, I had similar feelings with Star Trek Picard Season 3. It's been weird to me to read the almost universal praise for it. And, I will grant you, that compared to the first two seasons, season 3 is absolutely much better. But I still think Season 3 was ... not good. Really felt like a high-budget fan-fiction to me. The old characters just didn't feel very consistent with the characters we knew from TNG. As you say, Picard and Riker especially just seem to be ... very immature, and short-sighted. And Captain Shaw ... oh boy. I wanted to like him, but how he just kinda gives up command of his ship with this "you got us into this, you get us out! see ya!" kind of attitude ... what is with "Nutrek" and how it paints everyone in Starfleet as children?

Shaw, I kind of get because from his perspective, even checking his baggage with Picard and the Borg, a badmiral and the ship's previous captain decided to have a surprise inspection, then they ask for an off the books joyride to the edge of Federation space and back right before a major holiday that requires all ships in the fleet. And after you say no, your first officer goes behind your back and made it happen. I can't say in his shoes that I would started out as much of a dick about it, but he had a pretty good read on the situation.

(Also, Picard's confidant and Season 2 squeeze used to be Romulan Black Ops, and his best plan was "I'm going to hit up Riker, we're going to the new Titan, and we'll take that ship to edge of Federation space and back with no paper trail whatsoever?")

Picard (the show) also made Starfleet seem incredibly self-serving and dumb. Amassing the entire fleet for a parade? That's ridiculous.

I was also really annoyed at Picard and Riker being out of character too. When Riker said "You doomed us all" I was incredibly annoyed. Why is he throwing blame around in a time of crisis? He has never done that.

I couldn't agree with you more. I wished Captain Shaw from Picard S3 had gotten his own show. Maybe, he got all sorts of medals and accolades for saving Starfleet that he gets assigned to the types of missions he hates. So, we get to follow a reluctant captain who's put in the same situations as Picard and River. Maybe, he eventually grows, finds away to get promoted out of his job (working at the fleet museum!), and gives the Captain's chair to Seven.

It's the only thing my wife and I watch these days that is episodic and it's great to not have to recall all the previous episodes and see how one episode is just one brick in a big wall.

I love that they’ve managed to wrap up both of the big cliffhangers from last season right away and in episodes that still mostly work as standalone episodes. I was a little worried they were gonna drag out La’an and Una’s absences for at least a few episodes but we are just 2 into this season and basically back to the status quo. Now bring on the Boimler!

I enjoyed this more than the season opener. Maybe on rewatch they'll fit together better as you have the OTT action episode last week and then this slower "lawyer Trek" one.

Script-wise they didn't do any Buffy-style dialogue this week, which I appreciated. The camera work was good too. nu trek has overused hand held camera (Discovery was unwatchable at times because it was so shakey) but this was steady and they were pulling focus between characters like you rarely see in Trek. Normally Trek cuts between characters in a one-two conversation, pulling focus like that requires camera and actors to be in sync and there's less margin for error.

Also, the hairstyles were amazing this week, like distractingly good. Pike's "grey highlights" and trim is some asperational shit for someone in their late 40s haha. The lawyer's bob was maybe a wig, but it was always covering one side of her face and showing off an earring on the other side, it was like a video game model it was so tight and perfect. And Una's slightly 60s style feathered ends curved out perfectly, not a hair out of place (wig too?). Looked way too good for someone who'd been in prison anyway. Spock had his sideburns tapered to perfection, and the Admiral had an immaculate line to his beard. These people aren't just going to explore space, they're doing it while looking as sharp as possible.

I finally got around to watching the show.

I preferred this episode to the first one. The first one felt odd to me. I don't really know how to put it. But this second episode was great.

I like Starfleet Courtroom episodes. And it's finally not the captain taking up the role of defense attorney!

It was an emotional episode. I don't like the trend of nu trek treating the Starfleet System as terribly broken for the sake of drama. Which kind of destroys the hope of a better future for me.

But old trek has always questioned the system but things will still eventually be somewhat hopeful in the end. I felt like they did that here. The federation still has problems, but ultimately, people are compassionate.
