Good Omens: Season 2 | Official trailer
The one-off series 'Good Omens' from 2019 is getting a follow-up!
Here's the trailer for Season 2, which is being released on Amazon Prime later this month.
I only know this as a one-off novel, and a series based on that novel. I didn't expect any form of follow-up.
However, Neil Gaiman, who is listed as an executive producer and the show-runner for this new season, has supposedly said in the past that he and Terry Pratchett discussed a possible sequel to the novel (although Pratchett gave up on the idea when Gaiman moved to the USA). Maybe Gaiman is going to use ideas from that unwritten sequel for this second series.
'Good Omens' is a great novel, and the original series was a wonderfully delicious adaptation - not perfect in every detail, but gloriously enjoyable. David Tennant and Michael Sheen, in particular, have great chemistry together (which they utilised brilliantly in their performances in Simon Evans' lockdown comedy 'Staged'). Even if it's bad, this show will be good, just based on them.
I’m excited for this! The book is one of my favourites (hence the username), the audiobook is brilliant (Tennant and Sheen star in that too) and season one is one of my favourite book adaptations. I’ll be interested to see what they do for season two.
I really got the impression from season one that everyone involved really loved the book, so I have high hopes for what they all do with the next instalment.
I hope someone creates a thread for us to discuss it when it comes out! Maybe we need a thread for a rewatch of season one…? Or a reread…? Both?!
Could that someone be called @AgnesNutter? ;)
(I would offer to do it, but I already know I won't be able to watch it in a timely manner, and I won't be posting topics about episodes before I've watched them, so everyone will have to wait weeks, even months, to discuss it.)
I have the same thought, I’m not a binge watcher. But if no one else makes one I will, and everyone will just have to be content to wait for me :)
Gaiman is just so annoyingly talented isn’t he?! I heard he just released an album too. Is there anything the man can’t do.
I totally agree about adaptations, this really was done SO well. And Gaiman is very good at translating his words to screen. Although I’m usually wary of shows that go beyond the source material, I’m excited for this with him at the helm
I'm down for Good Omens threads! I love the book and show. Just, uh, promise you don't have black powder in those skirts... Ok?
Luckily I’m not a witch, only nice and accurate, so no need to burn me to find out about nails and powders and suchlike. Because no promises, ok?
It's truly the combination I suppose.
Season 1 was one of the finest bits of television I have ever seen. It is a rare example where I chose to read the book after seeing it depicted, and it shocked me with its fidelity. That is truly a joy! Although as OP noticed, it was not perfect in duplication, the funniest bits, the most impactful bits, the most dramatic bits, they were all presented with aplomb. The chemistry between the cast was absolutely undeniable. I eagerly await where they stray into new material, in season 2, and hope it holds a candle to its predecessor.
The first season was great but I thought the whole show was centred on the topic of the apocalypse and the predictions of the witch which were “good omens”. I’m not sure that a second season makes sense, and the last episode of the first season sort of finished. (Maybe I am misremembering idk)
But the leads are so so good that it doesn’t matter. Sheen and Tennant gave the show so much charm. I feel like Tennant is channeling Bill Nighy a bit with his carefree quips “better make it worthwhile” he says in the trailer is very BN.
The real reason to watch this season is they have a plot that it concocts a reason to have more screen time for John Hamm who is brilliant!
What a great trio!
The first season was based on a stand-alone novel. It had a single plot, and the 6 episodes covered it from start to finish. I don't think anyone expected a second season of this show. We might have wanted it but, as far as we knew, there was no material on which to base any future seasons.
However, as I pointed out in the main post, the authors of 'Good Omens' had discussed a possible sequel before going their separate ways (firstly on Earth, then off it). I would assume that Neil Gaiman is leveraging those discussions about that unwritten sequel for the purpose of this second season.
You're right, though: Tennant and Sheen made the show great. And they'll make a second season great as well.
It’s based on a plan for a second book that Gaiman and Pratchett never got a chance to write, so there’s hope!
I read the book last year. I got it from one of my colleagues who watched the series and really enjoyed it. I think it was one of the worst books I’ve ever read, we just didn’t click. I think it was sloggish and tries to be more clever than it is. I also found the pacing dreadful.
So you think I would like the tv series? I’ve been avoiding it on purpose since being let down by the book.
The style of humor is very much the same. So it may not hit for you. Or the wittiness of the book may translate better to the screen. I don't agree that it is trying to be more clever than it is, I think since it was published, other things have done similar takes. I'd argue that The Good Place owes Good Omens for example.
And so the original, which is a particular type of British humor, doesn't necessarily hit the way it might have. It's worth trying the first episode of you already have access but don't push yourself if you don't like it
I have only watched the show, not read the book, but I feel the exact same way about the show as you do about the book. So I imagine it would be a waste of time for you to watch the show
Why. Just why. Why does this still happen lol, why would you block me from consuming your advertisement
I'm not sure, but my best guess is distribution rights? The company that posted it may not be distributing it in your company, thus they don't have the rights to the promo material. I have no idea, though, simply a guess.
This is kind of crazy, I was just looking up information on Good Omens yesterday in contemplation of a username change.
Season 1 was really enjoyable, so I hope season 2 sets some new heights in unexplored territory!
Is it too much to hope that there might be more Dirk Gently in our futures too?
I would dearly love to see more Dirk Gently with the tone of the short lived Stephen Mangan version! For me, that just captured the feel of the books in a way that anything glossier couldn’t. It’s almost like Shaun of the Dead in tone: “Oh, supernatural absurdity beyond the possible understanding of the human mind? Fair enough, let me finish my tea and then we’ll take a look, then”.
Good Omens plays a lot better than Dirk Gently in translation to a high budget multinational series, I think. It still has that same understated humour, but it’s accentuated by being set against a literal epic battle of universal good and evil, rather than lost amongst it.
I remember when it first came out on Amazon, some Christian group called for a boycott of Netflix until it was cancelled. It was doubly funny because it was against the wrong company and for a one time series with no plans for another season.
Apparently, Amazon decided to hope their boycott is effective so uncanceled it.
i loved the book, the first season, and Gaiman and Pratchett's works. tennant and sheen are marvelous, especially together.
that said, i'm sad to say that the trailer and the released scenes from this season two look like garbage.
I've got my fingers crossed that this is good. I thought S1 was pretty much the perfect adaptation; I don't remember any quibbles I had about any changes or anything, perfect casting, earwormy theme song, everything.
That said, I'm definitely more a fan of GNU Pratchett than Gaiman (not that I dislike him, just not as for me), so knowing that the new season must have more of his influence than Pratchett's, I'm hoping that it lives up to it.
I just finished season 2 and LOVED IT! A great way to expand on the story and on the characters. The acting, the chemistry, the twists, the [HUGE SPOILER]. I’m hungry for season 3 and hope for news soon that it is greenlit. Any predictions for it?
It was exceptionally good and I binged it in a week even when I really didn’t have the time to do so because as soon as I started I had to know what happened next, however I would also like to say
Spoiler
Fuck you Neil Gaiman for making me care so much about these characters, that ending broke my heart and ruined my week. I demand a season three where everyone lives happily ever after immediately!
David Tennant's posture and movement alone deserve an Emmy.
Oh my gosh, yes! I’ve rewatched the end of the finale multiple times, and it’s no less poignant. To those who want to know what happens, watch season 2 then come back and thank us!
Last official word is that Neil is writing season 3, which he's being paid for, but it hasn't been greenlit officially yet.
I read that the WGA strike was impacting the writing, but also that they need more viewers for the green light. So get viewing, everybody! Some of us are itching, some aching, and some dying for a new season about our fav afterlife duo!
Neil has stopped pushing for the views (he feels they've probably made their mind up). I haven't even seen S2 yet because of life so I'll be watching regardless. But yes he stopped writing during the strike
Was there a spoiler in this trailer? Neil Gaiman mentioned one on his blog but I'm not sure if it's this one?
I've watched the trailer a couple of times, without knowing there was supposedly a spoiler in there.
There's a moment in the trailer where Character A tells Character B that Character C is missing and noone knows where they are - and then Character C turns up, because Character B knew they were missing all along, and Character A is surprised. Without knowing what the spoiler is supposed to be, maybe that moment is it. Maybe, until that moment in the first episode, we're not supposed to know the whereabouts of Character C, so this moment in the trailer gives away that secret.
Or maybe it's another moment entirely. Maybe there's a scene in the sequence at the end which gives away the existence of a character or event that's supposed to be a surprise.
Or... maybe that blog by Gaiman is talking about some other leak, somewhere else on the internet.
I really hope this season feels more complete. The first season felt as though it kind of tumbled towards the end, even though I absolutely adore the first two or three episodes.
That being said, more Tennant is best Tennant.
